The slowest Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield, measured by base Speed, is not a single species. Shuckle, Munchlax, and Pyukumuku share the lowest base Speed value in the games, which is 5. Shuckle is a correct answer, but it is one of three tied Pokémon, and Guinness World Records verified that three-way tie on 26 February 2019.
What the “slowest” figure measures
When people ask which Pokémon is slowest, they usually mean base Speed. This is the species-level stat that every Pokémon of a given species shares before individual factors are applied. It is not the Speed value a specific Pokémon displays after it has been raised, and it does not decide who moves first in every battle.
The distinction matters. A calculated Speed at level 50 depends on the individual Pokémon’s level, Individual Values, Effort Values, and Nature, so two Pokémon of the same species can show different numbers. Base Speed is the one value that stays the same across a species. Turn order in a real battle also depends on the moves used, priority, held items, and abilities, so a low base Speed does not guarantee that a Pokémon always acts last.
A low base Speed is also not a verdict on competitive usefulness. Several Pokémon with very low Speed are built around other stats, and a slow base value is often paired with high defensive or support traits.

The three Pokémon tied at base Speed 5
Three species share the lowest base Speed in Sword and Shield. The table below lists each one and where its figure is documented.
| Pokémon | Base Speed | Where the figure is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Shuckle | 5 | Pokémon Database stat entry; a Sword and Shield-specific speed ranking |
| Munchlax | 5 | Guinness World Records (verified 26 February 2019) |
| Pyukumuku | 5 | A Sword and Shield-specific speed ranking; Guinness World Records (verified 26 February 2019) |
Guinness World Records states: “The slowest Pokémon are Shuckle, Munchlax and Pyukumuku, each with a speed stat of 5, as verified on 26 February 2019.” Because the record names all three, the accurate answer to the title question is a tie. Naming Shuckle alone implies a uniqueness the evidence does not support.

Shuckle’s entries in Sword and Shield
Shuckle is the Pokémon most often given as the answer, so it is worth checking its in-game details. Its Galar Pokédex number is #227. Its base Speed of 5 applies to the species, so the same figure holds wherever it appears in the games.
The Sword version’s Pokédex entry reads: “It stores berries inside its shell. To avoid attacks, it hides beneath rocks and remains completely still.” The Shield entry says the berries stored in its shell eventually turn into thick, pulpy juice. These lines describe Shuckle’s behaviour in the game’s lore. They do not explain why its Speed is low.

Which Pokémon count as “in Sword and Shield”
The answer covers the base game and its expanded roster. Serebii’s Sword and Shield coverage explains that the Expansion Pass adds separate Pokédexes for the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. Shuckle is listed as #170 in the Crown Tundra Pokédex, in addition to its #227 Galar number. Because the base Speed value belongs to the species, the three-way tie does not change between the main Pokédex and the expansion listings.
Base stats are as documented as of October 2026. They are the values shown in the cited Pokémon Database entry, the Guinness World Records verification, and the Sword and Shield speed ranking.
