What Is the Strategy for Tainted Samson in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance?

Tainted Samson's strategy is about controlling positioning in normal combat and using the berserk window on enemies already in reach, while keeping the character's mechanic separate from the Berserk! active item.

The short answer: play Tainted Samson in two modes. During normal combat, stay room-aware and avoid trading health just to force melee contact. When the berserk state starts, use it to clear enemies already within reach, not to chase into unopened rooms or take contact damage you did not need to take. Keep that built-in mechanic separate from Berserk!, an unlockable active item with its own effect.

What the character’s berserk mechanic is

Tainted Samson is a Tainted variant of Samson from The Binding of Isaac: Repentance, the expansion that added new character variants and was released on March 31, 2021. The character’s defining feature is a berserk state that changes how the run plays out, so most of the strategy question is about when and how to use that state without losing control of your position.

Exact figures for the built-in effect, including how often it triggers, how long it lasts, and what stat changes it applies, were not confirmed for this article. Character and item wiki pages that describe these values could not be verified against a specific game version, so treat any number you see online as provisional until you check it in your own copy of the game. The guidance below is built on the berserk premise itself, not on a tested route or measured build.

How to play around the berserk window

During normal combat

Outside the berserk state, the main risk is letting an aggressive opening pull you into bad positioning. Keep enough distance to read enemy movement and projectile patterns, and avoid spending health to force a melee engagement. Treat each room as something to read before you commit.

When berserk begins

The aggressive window is best used against enemies already close to you. Prioritize what is in reach, keep track of exits, and watch for hazards on the floor. Chasing enemies across a room or moving toward an unopened door during the window is where most avoidable damage comes from.

Positioning checklist

  • Before entering a fight, note the nearest exit and any spikes, fire, or hazard tiles.
  • Do not push into an unopened room just because the state is active.
  • Count the enemies that can reach you within the window, and clear those first.
  • When the window ends, back off to your established distance before the next wave.
  • If health is low, prefer retreating over contact trades.

Berserk! is a separate item

Berserk! is an unlockable active item, not another name for Tainted Samson’s built-in effect. Keep the two apart when you read guides, because a duration or trigger listed for the item does not describe the character’s passive state.

Feature Tainted Samson built-in berserk Berserk! (active item)
Type Character mechanic Active item
How it is obtained Part of the Tainted Samson character Unlocked by defeating Delirium as Tainted Samson, according to the indexed item reference
Duration Not confirmed for this article Five seconds, as listed in the indexed item reference
Trigger Not confirmed for this article Activated by the player
Stat changes Not confirmed for this article Not confirmed for this article

Checking the numbers in your own game

Because the built-in values were not verified for a specific version, check them directly before relying on them for a run. Start a Tainted Samson run, note how the berserk state appears on screen, and time it against a stopwatch if you need a duration. Results can differ between the base Repentance build and later updates, so compare against the version you are actually playing rather than a guide from another year.

The platform and edition you own also matter. This article does not confirm differences between PC, console, or mobile releases, so verify the behavior on your own system.

Bottom line

Use normal combat to keep your position and health intact, and use the berserk window to clear enemies already within reach. Keep the built-in mechanic separate from Berserk!, and confirm exact timing in your installed version before building a plan around it.
