There is no single universally strongest Pokémon card. The answer changes depending on whether you mean the most HP, the most attack damage, the best card against a particular opponent, or the strongest legal performer in a specific tournament format. Pokémon Support makes the same distinction: high HP and a one-hit attack are usually not found on the same Pokémon. Read Pokémon’s explanation.
What does “strongest” mean?
Start by choosing a measure. A card with exceptional durability may not deal the most damage, and a huge attack may require specific Energy, a discard, or other setup. The opponent and the challenge matter, too.
- HP and durability: Compare printed HP, then account for effects that prevent or reduce damage.
- Attack damage: Check the damage alongside its conditions, Energy requirements, costs, and setup. A conditional maximum is not the same as damage the card can routinely deliver.
- Matchup: Weakness, resistance, and other card interactions can make one card more useful against a particular opposing deck. Pokémon’s example is that Water can be useful against Fire, while Fire can be useful against Grass; type alone does not decide every game.
- Tournament strength: Evaluate a card in a named format and on a stated date, considering legality, its role in a deck, setup, and event results.
Why a single card stat cannot settle it
HP and attack damage are easy to compare, but they do not describe everything a card can do. Effects can change which attacks are available or how a card performs in a matchup.
Mew VMAX shows how an effect adds context
The official Pokémon TCG database lists Mew VMAX with 310 HP and an attack that uses an attack from a Benched Fusion Strike Pokémon. That makes the card’s effect part of the evaluation, not just its printed HP or attack damage. This example does not establish Mew VMAX as the strongest card overall. See Mew VMAX in the official card database.

Competitive strength depends on format and date
A card’s reputation is not enough to show that it is currently tournament-strong. First identify the format, then verify the card’s legality and assess results from that format and period. Play! Pokémon describes Standard as its most common format and explains that cards rotate out based on regulation marks; some older cards, or cards without a mark, may remain legal if reprinted with a current mark. Check Play! Pokémon’s competitive rules and formats.
No current tournament ranking is established here, so there is no defensible basis for naming a strongest Standard performer as of October 8, 2026. A 2024 strategy article about Pikachu ex’s Topaz Bolt illustrates how card effects and Pokémon Tool cards can affect damage or survival, but it is a historical example rather than evidence of today’s top card. How to compare cards for your purpose
If you want the toughest card
Compare HP, then check whether effects can reduce or prevent damage. A high printed HP figure is one durability measure, not proof that the card is hardest to defeat in every matchup.
If you want the biggest attack
Read the full attack text. Note required Energy, conditions, discard costs, and setup before comparing damage figures. An attack’s maximum matters only if you can meet its requirements in the situation you care about.

If you want a card for a particular opponent
Consider the opposing Pokémon and deck, including weakness, resistance, and relevant effects. A matchup advantage can make a card the better choice for that game without making it the best card in general.
If you want a competitive deck
Name the format and date, verify legality against the current rules, and use results from relevant events. Tournament strength belongs to a card in a deck and metagame—not to a card in isolation.

If you are choosing what to collect
Playing strength and collecting value are different questions. Decide whether you want a card for a deck, a collection, or both before treating “strongest” as a reason to seek it out.

The sources cited here do not establish a named statistic or published all-time record for the strongest Pokémon TCG card. Mew VMAX’s listed 310 HP is a documented attribute of that card, not proof of a comparative HP record. Any claim about a record-holder or current top tournament card needs a defined measure and comparable evidence.
