Suffocate is a Deepwoken status effect that stops the affected character from casting Mantras for a limited time and deals a small amount of damage over time. Community reference pages tie it mainly to Galebreathe attacks and talents, and they show it with four crosses rotating around the character’s neck.
How the effect works
Suffocate does two things to the character it hits:
- It blocks Mantra casting for the length of the effect. The affected character cannot use Mantras until it wears off.
- It deals small damage over time while active. Community references describe the damage as minor compared with a direct hit.
The community status-effects reference spells the name as Suffocate, while some talent descriptions use Suffocation. Both refer to the same effect. The reference pages do not give one confirmed duration or damage-per-tick figure that can be checked against official developer notes, so treat any specific number you find online as a fan-reported value until you confirm it in the current game.
How to recognize it
The on-screen indicator is four crosses rotating around the affected character’s neck. If you see that icon on a player or enemy, Suffocate is active on that target. Seeing it on yourself usually means you are unable to cast Mantras until the icon disappears.

What applies Suffocate
Community pages list several sources, all of which are tied to Galebreathe or Wind-based attacks:
- Wind Gun, a Galebreathe attack.
- Galetrap, a Galebreathe trap-style attack.
- Galeforce monsters, which are reported to apply the effect on hit.
- Certain other Galebreathe talents and attacks, which the reference pages mention without a complete, verified list.
Because the list is maintained by fans, a talent or monster missing from it does not prove it cannot apply Suffocate, and a listed source may have changed since the page was last updated.

Talent interactions that change how often it lands
A World Without Song
Community pages describe A World Without Song as applying Suffocate after a set number of Wind Mantra hits. The required hit count depends on how much Galebreathe the character has invested:
| Galebreathe investment | Wind Mantra hits needed to apply Suffocate |
|---|---|
| 75 or higher | Every 3 hits |
| Below 75 | Every 4 hits |
| Below 40 | Every 5 hits |
The pattern is that lower Galebreathe investment raises the hit threshold, so the effect lands less often. These values come from a fan-maintained page and have not been confirmed against an official patch note, so check them in the current game before planning a build around them.

Silencer’s Blade
Community references describe Silencer’s Blade as extending the duration of Suffocate when you melee an opponent who already has it. The pages do not give a confirmed extension amount, and edge cases, such as how the extension interacts with a fresh application, are not documented in a way that can be verified. Test the interaction yourself if it matters to your build.
Apparitions and Specter-path builds
The Deepwoken Builder reference, a fan-made site that states it is unaffiliated with Deepwoken or its developers, describes Apparitions as applying Winded on hit. It also says Apparitions can spawn when an effect that would normally apply Suffocation procs.

- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
In practice, Specter-path interactions can change the result. An effect that would normally apply Suffocate may produce a different outcome, so do not assume every Suffocate trigger behaves the same way across builds.
