A Wii Download Ticket was a historical code, or password, that let a Wii owner obtain one specific piece of downloadable content through the Wii Shop Channel. It was not a general-purpose currency or a universal code. The Wii Shop Channel stopped selling new content on January 30, 2019, so a ticket can no longer be entered to buy a new download.
What a Wii Download Ticket did
Each ticket was tied to a particular download. Nintendo’s own examples show that the same name covered more than one arrangement, so a ticket should be understood by the offer it was attached to rather than as a single interchangeable code.
Jam with the Band: a code packaged with the game
The clearest documented case comes from Nintendo’s English-language Iwata Asks interview about Jam with the Band. Kitamura, a member of the game’s development team, explained the mechanism: “When a user buys a copy of Jam with the Band, their game package will include a password.” The password was entered in the Wii Shop Channel to download the Live Channel. The ticket therefore came with the game itself and served a single purpose, unlocking that channel.
Nintendo’s accompanying note adds a regional detail: “In Europe, the Wii Download Ticket Number can be found printed in the manual accompanying the game.” Outside Europe, the interview does not say where the number appeared, so readers should not assume the manual location applied everywhere.

Metroid Prime Trilogy: a Club Nintendo promotion
A separate Nintendo notice for Metroid Prime Trilogy described a different use. Qualifying Club Nintendo registrants could receive a Wii Download Ticket for the original Metroid on the Virtual Console. This was a time-limited promotional offer. It shows that tickets could be issued as rewards, not only packed with a game, and it does not indicate that all tickets worked the same way.
Comparing the two documented cases
| Example | How the ticket reached the player | Where the number appeared | What it unlocked | Usable for a new purchase today? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jam with the Band | Included in the game package | Europe: printed in the game’s manual. Other regions: not stated in the cited interview | Live Channel, entered in the Wii Shop Channel | No. New Wii Shop purchases ended January 30, 2019 |
| Metroid Prime Trilogy promotion | Issued to qualifying Club Nintendo registrants | Not stated in the Nintendo notice reviewed | Original Metroid on the Virtual Console | No. New Wii Shop purchases ended January 30, 2019 |
Can you still use a Wii Download Ticket?
Nintendo’s Wii Shop discontinuation notice on its support site sets the cutoff. Wii Points could be added until March 26, 2018, and Wii Shop software could be purchased until January 30, 2019. After that date, the Wii Shop Channel no longer accepts new content purchases, so a ticket cannot be redeemed to make a new download.

The same notice describes a narrower service. Content already purchased may be redownloaded “for the time being,” and Nintendo warns that this redownload option will end on a future date. The page does not give that end date. Redownloading previously purchased content is not the same as redeeming a ticket, and the notice does not say that tickets reopen this option.
What to do if you have a code
- Identify the game and region. Check the game title, the region printed on the packaging, and the manual. A European manual may contain the ticket number; other regions were not addressed in the interview cited here.
- Determine what the code was for. Look for the advertised download. For Jam with the Band, the documented target was the Live Channel. For the Metroid Prime Trilogy promotion, it was the original Metroid.
- Check whether the content is already on your console. If you previously purchased it, open the Wii Shop Channel and look for it under your purchase history. Redownload availability is governed by Nintendo’s notice and may end at any time.
- Do not expect a new redemption to work. Entering a ticket for content you have not already bought will not succeed, because new Wii Shop purchases have closed.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The historical facts above come from Nintendo’s English-language Iwata Asks interview and a Nintendo Support notice on Wii Shop discontinuation. Together they establish how the Jam with the Band code worked, the European manual location, the Metroid Prime Trilogy promotion, and the January 30, 2019 closure of new purchases. They do not establish a complete list of every ticket Nintendo issued, the number of tickets in circulation, or how many still function for redownloads. Nothing above should be read as a count or a success rate.

- Includes Replacement Wii U Console.
Readers should also keep the Wii Points card separate from a ticket. Points were a stored-value purchasing method, while a ticket was tied to one download. Neither can now buy new Wii Shop content.
A used copy of Jam with the Band or a Wii console does not restore the ticket’s redemption function. Buying the game now gives access to whatever the disc itself contains, but it does not reopen Wii Shop purchasing.

Nintendo’s Support site remains the primary reference for current Wii Shop status, and readers should check it directly for any changes to the redownload service.
