It also provides friends and chat features, remote play from an Xbox console, rewards, cloud gaming access and a combined view of games installed through supported PC storefronts.
The app and Game Pass are separate. You can install and use the app without subscribing, but a Game Pass subscription is required to play games supplied through the Game Pass catalog. You either download a local PC version or stream a supported title through cloud gaming, depending on the game, plan, device, region and your connection.

What the Xbox app on PC actually does
Microsoft presents the Xbox PC app as a central place to discover games, download included PC titles, launch games and communicate with friends on PC, mobile and console. It is software that manages access to games and services; it is not the Game Pass membership itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter you sign in with a Microsoft account, the app can show games you own, games available through your subscription and games installed on the PC. Selecting a Game Pass title displays its availability and the option to install it when a PC version is included. The app then manages the download and launch process, while the game runs under its own hardware and software requirements.

What the app is not
- Installing the app does not give you a Game Pass subscription.
- The app does not make every Xbox console game a native PC game.
- A game shown in the combined library is not necessarily included with Game Pass; it may be an installation from another supported PC storefront.
- The catalog, plan entitlements and cloud-play availability can change.
Xbox’s Game Pass getting-started guide describes catalog access as a subscription benefit. You must use the account that owns the subscription, or an account with the appropriate entitlement on the device, when installing or playing an included title.
What you need before installing games
The product page lists the baseline requirements for the app itself. These are not a guarantee that every game will run well: individual games can require a faster processor, more memory, a dedicated graphics card, additional storage or a newer Windows build.
| Requirement | Xbox app listing | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher | Update Windows before troubleshooting an installation that will not start. |
| Storage for the app | 150 MB | This is the app’s listed footprint, not the space required by games. |
| Display | 720p | The app can be used on a 720p display; games may target higher resolutions. |
| Game hardware | Varies by title | Check the requirements shown on each game’s product page. |
| Windows S mode | May need to be left to play games | S mode can restrict software installation, so follow Windows’ instructions if the app or game cannot install. |
The 22H2 requirement comes from the localized Xbox app page and applies to the app listing, not every Xbox service. Cloud gaming has a separate operating-system statement, described below.
How to use Game Pass in the Xbox PC app
- Install and open the Xbox app. Get the current Windows app, then launch it after installation.
- Sign in. Use the Microsoft account that has your Game Pass subscription. If the app shows a different account, sign out and sign in with the account that owns the entitlement.
- Open the Game Pass area. Browse the catalog or search for a specific game. Availability is determined by your plan, the game’s PC entitlement and your region.
- Check the game page. Confirm that a PC version is included and review the storage, operating-system and hardware requirements. A console-only listing cannot be installed as a native PC game.
- Choose Install for local play. Select an installation drive when prompted. The app downloads the game files; the game then runs from your PC rather than from Microsoft’s servers.
- Launch from the app or your library. Keep the account signed in while the subscription is being validated. If your subscription expires or a title leaves the catalog, access can change even though files remain on the drive.
Downloading is separate from streaming. A download consumes local storage and can be played with the performance your PC provides, while cloud gaming avoids installing the game but depends on a supported stream and a stable connection.

Downloads versus cloud gaming
Use a local installation when your PC meets the game’s requirements and you want the game to run from your own hardware. Use cloud gaming when the title is supported for streaming and you prefer not to install it, or when your PC is not powerful enough to run the local version. The two options do not expose exactly the same catalog.
| Consideration | Download a PC game | Cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On your PC using a locally installed PC build | On Xbox servers, with video and input streamed to your device |
| Storage | Requires the game’s installation space plus updates | No full local game installation is needed, although the app and other data still use storage |
| Hardware | Your PC must meet that game’s CPU, GPU, memory and other requirements | Local graphics hardware is less important, but the device and operating system must support the stream |
| Internet | Needed for downloading, updates and entitlement checks; play requirements depend on the title | A reliable internet connection is central to play quality and responsiveness |
| Catalog | The title must include a PC version and be included in your plan and region | The title must be enabled for cloud play and included in your plan and region |
| Input | Keyboard, mouse, controller or another input supported by the PC game | Xbox says a variety of controllers and other input methods are supported; the exact choice depends on the game and device |
How cloud gaming works from a PC
Cloud gaming sends the game’s rendered video to your PC and returns your input to the remote Xbox system. Because the game is not rendered locally, you can avoid a large download, but network congestion, high latency or an unstable connection can cause image quality and control problems.
Xbox’s December 19, 2025 cloud guide lists Windows 10 version 20H2 and later for cloud play. That is a cloud-gaming requirement and should not be confused with the Xbox PC app page’s Windows 10/11 version 22H2-or-higher listing. Service availability also depends on country, supported devices, the game and the subscription plan.
At the time of that guide’s publication, Xbox said cloud gaming was available with Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate. Prices, plan names, supported regions and the cloud-enabled catalog are subject to change, so check the current Xbox page for your location before subscribing. The same guide reported a 45% year-over-year increase in Xbox cloud gaming hours in 2025; that is Xbox’s own usage figure, not an independent performance or satisfaction measurement.

Typical cloud-play steps
- Sign in to the Xbox app with an account that has an eligible Game Pass plan.
- Find a title marked as available for cloud play. A Game Pass listing can be downloadable, streamable, or both.
- Start the stream and choose a supported input method. Xbox supports various controllers and other inputs, but it does not state that one controller is mandatory for every game or device.
- If the stream is unstable, move to a stronger network connection, reduce competing traffic and check whether the title or service is available in your region.
Features beyond the Game Pass catalog
The app is also a social and account hub. Xbox lists chat, friend activity and account connections, allowing you to see and communicate with friends across PC, mobile and console. These functions are available independently of whether a particular game is installed through Game Pass.
Remote play
Remote play lets you connect to an Xbox console and play from the PC through the console connection. This is different from cloud gaming: remote play uses your own console, while cloud gaming uses Xbox’s servers. The app’s remote-play support does not turn a console-only title into a native PC installation.
Rewards
Xbox includes rewards access among the app’s features. The exact activities, eligibility and redemption options can vary by account and region, so treat rewards as an additional service rather than a discount on every Game Pass title.
The Tool Desk

The app can bring together installed games from supported PC storefronts with Xbox and Game Pass titles. This makes the library useful as a launcher and history view, but it does not merge ownership or subscriptions. A game installed from another storefront remains governed by that storefront’s account and license, even when it appears beside Game Pass games.

Xbox described this broader library approach in its September 15, 2025 announcement, “Seamlessly Access Your Gaming Library, Apps, and Play History in One Place with Xbox on Windows PCs and Handheld”.
Xbox Mode is separate from the app and Game Pass
Xbox Mode is a related Windows 11 experience, not another name for Game Pass and not a replacement for the Xbox PC app. Xbox says it is a controller-optimized, full-screen interface that aggregates the Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts.
The rollout began in select markets on April 30, 2026, according to Xbox’s announcement. Availability is market-dependent, so a Windows 11 PC does not automatically have Xbox Mode. Its rollout status should be checked for your country and device. The general PC app’s listed Windows 10/11 22H2 requirement should not be presented as an Xbox Mode requirement or availability guarantee.

- You want to avoid a large installation or lack sufficient local storage.
- Your device meets the cloud service’s requirements and your internet connection is dependable.
- You accept that stream quality and input response depend on network conditions.
Use remote play when
- You own an Xbox console with the game and want to play through that console from the PC.
- You want access to your console library without installing a separate PC build.
Common problems and practical fixes
The app opens, but a Game Pass game shows a purchase option
Confirm that you are signed in with the account holding the subscription, then check whether the game is included in your specific plan and region. Catalog rights can differ between PC, console and cloud versions. If the game has left the catalog, a local installation does not preserve the subscription entitlement.

The game will not install
Check that Windows meets the app’s 22H2-or-later listing, that you have sufficient drive space and that the game’s own requirements are satisfied. Windows S mode may need to be disabled according to Microsoft’s Windows instructions. Also verify that the selected drive is available and that the app is up to date.
Cloud play is missing
Look for a cloud-play indicator on the game page and confirm that your plan, country and device are supported. Cloud eligibility is separate from whether the same title can be downloaded. The December 2025 guide’s Windows 10 20H2-or-later statement applies to cloud play, while the app page lists a newer 22H2 baseline for the app itself.
The stream is blurry or controls feel delayed
Use the most stable connection available, pause other high-bandwidth activity and move closer to the network access point when using Wi-Fi. A controller can be useful for games designed around gamepad input, but Xbox also recognizes other input methods; the best choice depends on the title and device.

The practical answer
The Xbox app on PC is the front door to Xbox gaming services on Windows: it organizes games, installs eligible PC versions, launches them, connects you with friends and exposes cloud and remote-play options. Game Pass is the separate subscription that supplies access to a changing catalog. For each title, decide between a local download and cloud streaming after checking the plan, region, PC requirements, storage, cloud eligibility and network conditions.
