“True damage” has two separate meanings in League of Legends. In gameplay, it is a damage type that ordinarily bypasses armor, magic resistance, and most incoming damage reduction. How true damage works in gameplay
It bypasses armor and magic resistance
League’s ordinary true damage is not physical damage and is not magic damage. Increasing a target’s armor does not normally reduce it, and increasing magic resistance does not normally reduce it either. That is why a true-damage effect can remain effective against a target that has heavily invested in either resistance.

This does not mean true damage is automatically the strongest possible damage in every situation. Its value depends on the ability or effect dealing it, the amount shown, its timing, and whether the target has another defense that can interact with the incoming hit.
“Ignores everything” is an inaccurate shortcut
The useful rule is “true damage ordinarily bypasses armor, magic resistance, and most damage reduction,” not “true damage ignores everything.” Shields can still absorb damage, and invulnerability can prevent damage from being applied. Other special defensive or system effects can produce exceptions, so an interaction should be checked against a current ability description or game reference when the exact patch matters.
The League of Legends Wiki’s technical description also distinguishes exceptional internal damage used by the Nexus Obelisk. That special case should not be generalized to champion abilities or treated as the normal definition of true damage.

When a guide says that an effect “deals true damage,” it is describing how the game classifies and calculates that damage, not promising that every target state will take the full number. A shield may need to be removed first, and an invulnerable target may take no damage at all. Conversely, buying more armor or magic resistance is not the normal answer to an incoming true-damage effect.
For example, if two targets have very different armor totals but are both exposed to the same ordinary true-damage hit without a shield or invulnerability, armor alone normally does not explain a difference in the true-damage amount. If one target has a shield, however, the visible health loss can differ because the shield is a separate defensive layer. This is why combat-log results should be read alongside the target’s current effects rather than reduced to a single slogan.
Because interactions can change with patches, use the current description for the specific ability, rune, item, or objective effect you are investigating. The general classification is stable enough to understand the concept, while edge-case behavior can be version-sensitive.

What True Damage, the music group, is
Riot describes True Damage as a virtual hip-hop group formed by K/DA’s rapper Akali. The group’s champion lineup is Akali, Ekko, Senna, Qiyana, and Yasuo. This is a fictional performance concept: the champions provide the in-universe identities, while real artists supply the voices and music.

The group’s debut single was “GIANTS.” Riot presented the video at Worlds 2019 and credited Becky G, Keke Palmer, SOYEON of (G)I-DLE, DUCKWRTH, and Thutmose as featured artists. Riot’s description associates the performers with the champion personas: Akali with SOYEON, Ekko with Thutmose and DUCKWRTH, Senna with Keke Palmer, Qiyana with Becky G, and Yasuo with the track’s signature production.
That performer list explains why a champion can appear to “sing” in promotional material without implying that the fictional character is a real recording artist. The group is a multimedia Riot project combining a song, animated or game-related presentation, and cosmetic content. The champions are the narrative identities, while the credited musicians are the real-world performers behind the release.
What “GIANTS” establishes
“GIANTS” is more than a song title used in a skin promotion: it is identified by Riot as True Damage’s debut single. The Worlds 2019 presentation gives the project a specific launch context, while the performer credits show that the collaboration was assembled across several artists rather than recorded by one conventional band. Listening to the track therefore answers a music question; it does not provide evidence that the gameplay mechanic was introduced at the same time.
Riot’s official page also connects the release to listening services, so a reader looking for the group should search for the single and the credited performers, not for a gameplay item or an in-game damage category. The digital release and the champion skins are related pieces of one promotional concept, but they remain separate from combat rules.

These skins are cosmetic content. Choosing a True Damage skin does not cause a champion to deal more true damage, convert physical or magic damage into true damage, or otherwise alter the rules for the damage type. The theme is visual and musical, even though its name is identical to the gameplay term.
Riot’s launch material framed the cosmetics as a way to “run the Rift” with the five members. In practical terms, that means a player can select the themed appearance in a match, while the champion’s abilities continue to follow the normal game rules for that champion and patch. A skin can change presentation, effects, animations, or voice treatment as designed by Riot, but its name is not a gameplay modifier.
Why the skin roster can cause confusion
The five-skin roster is the same five-champion lineup associated with the virtual group, which makes the proper-name usage easy to spot in patch notes. It is also why a search for “True Damage champions” may return cosmetics rather than abilities. The safest interpretation is to check the surrounding noun: a “True Damage skin” is a cosmetic, while an ability that “deals true damage” is a combat effect.

How True Damage differs from K/DA
They are separate groups
K/DA is an earlier Riot virtual music group. True Damage is a later, distinct hip-hop collaboration. They are not two names for the same band, and True Damage is not a renamed K/DA lineup.
Akali is the crossover character
Akali is associated with both projects. Riot’s framing specifically identifies True Damage as a collaboration formed by K/DA’s rapper Akali. The lore description also treats Akali as remaining part of K/DA while participating in True Damage.
That overlap can make search results and fan discussions confusing. Seeing Akali in a True Damage video or skin does not mean the entire K/DA group has moved into True Damage. It means one champion character has an identity in both music projects. The shared character is a bridge between fictional lineups, not proof that the groups have merged.

Their themes are not gameplay mechanics
Neither K/DA nor True Damage changes the definition of true damage in a live game. Their names belong to Riot’s music and cosmetic universe; the combat term is a separate rules classification. A K/DA or True Damage appearance therefore cannot be used to infer how armor, magic resistance, shields, or invulnerability interact with an ability.

The combat term predates and exists independently of this music timeline. The 2019 release explains the proper-name usage, not the origin of the gameplay damage type. Patch 9.22 is useful historical context for the cosmetics, but it is not a patch that redefined how ordinary true damage is calculated.
How to tell which meaning a page or player intends
- Look for gameplay vocabulary. Armor, magic resistance, shields, damage reduction, abilities, or combat calculations indicate the damage type.
- Look for music vocabulary. Songs, performers, videos, Worlds performances, or virtual groups indicate the Riot collaboration.
- Look for cosmetic vocabulary. Skins, champion splash art, or Patch 9.22 point to the True Damage theme.
- Check capitalization, but do not rely on it alone. “True Damage” usually names the group; “true damage” usually names the mechanic, but informal writing is inconsistent.
- Check the verb. “Deals,” “reduces,” or “mitigates” usually introduces a combat interaction; “released,” “performed,” or “features” usually introduces the music project.

Does true damage bypass shields?
Not as a universal rule. True damage bypasses armor, magic resistance, and most damage reduction, but shields and invulnerability can still affect whether damage reaches a champion. Check the relevant effect for the current patch.
Do True Damage skins deal extra damage?

Does a True Damage skin turn an ability into true damage?
No. Damage type comes from the champion ability or other game effect, not from the cosmetic selected in the champion menu. A themed skin can make an ability look or sound different while leaving its underlying classification unchanged.
Why can true damage still fail to remove health?
