Tournament organizers use the standings to determine the order for direct invitations, but a high rank alone does not guarantee entry: the roster must also meet continuity and event-specific eligibility rules.
How does VRS work in CS2?
Valve defines VRS as “the official system for ranking the performance of Rosters published by Valve, which is published monthly and shall be the basis for Direct VRS Invites.” The rules make the roster—not the esports organization—the ranked unit. A roster is a collection of five specific athletes, whether or not they remain associated with the same organization.
The rules establish VRS’s purpose and how organizers use its rankings, but do not provide a complete calculation formula, weighting, or full account of the inputs and time window. It is therefore not possible to infer a team’s position from a particular result, prize amount, or recent form alone.
How do tournament organizers use VRS for invitations?
For a ranked tournament, the organizer specifies which VRS list or lists to use, how many rosters to invite from each, and the starting rank. Invitations are issued in rank order, using the most recent VRS publication available on the invitation date. An organizer must invite at least two rosters from each list it uses. If a roster declines or cannot accept, the organizer proceeds to the next roster in the list.

Rank determines the invitation sequence; it does not override eligibility. A roster can accept a direct invite only if at least three participating athletes were members of that roster on the invitation date and will play in every match. The roster must also meet the tournament’s other published invitation criteria and must not already have declined that event.
What is the difference between regional and global VRS?
| List or use | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Regional VRS: Europe, Americas, and Asia | Used for invitations under the Major Supplemental Rulebook. |
| Global VRS | Used to seed teams into stages before a Major, after invitations have been accepted. |
For Major invitation purposes, a roster is assigned to the region represented by the majority of its players. If regional representation is tied, the rulebook gives priority in this order: Europe, Americas, then Asia.

These are optional subdivisions for invitations, not replacements for the three principal regional lists in the Major rulebook.
How does VRS determine Counter-Strike Major invitations?
The Major Supplemental Rulebook describes a 32-team invitation structure across three stages:

| Major stage | VRS invitations |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 | 16 teams |
| Stage 2 | 8 teams |
| Stage 3 | 8 teams |
Stage 2 and Stage 3 regional allocations depend on how many teams from each region reached those respective stages at the previous Major. These figures describe the structure in the rulebook; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every future Major will use an unchanged format.
What VRS does—and does not—tell you
- It ranks rosters: the five-player unit matters, not just an organization’s name or branding.
- It sets an invitation order: organizers use their stated list or lists and invite sequentially from a starting rank.
- It is not an in-game leaderboard or individual skill rating: the rules describe a system for ranking roster performance.
- It does not guarantee tournament entry: roster continuity and event-specific criteria still apply.
- It does not establish a team’s current position by itself: Valve publishes standings monthly, and positions can change. The exact October 2026 list and placements are not established here.
Which rules apply to a particular tournament?
Valve’s Tournament Operation Requirements state that an event is governed by the version current at its Additional Information deadline. Invitation formats and eligibility filters can differ by event, so use that tournament’s applicable rules and published criteria rather than assuming every organizer or Major uses identical arrangements.
