After each guess, colored tiles show which letters appear in the answer and whether they sit in the right position. Every player gets the same answer on the same day, which is the feature that made the game spread. The New York Times acquired it in January 2022 and folded it into NYT Games.
How Wordle works
A round takes a few minutes and follows the same steps every time:
- Open the current day’s puzzle in the official game.
- Type a five-letter English word as your first guess and submit it.
- Read the color feedback on each tile, then use it to shape your next guess.
- Keep guessing until you find the answer or use all six attempts.
- Share your result if you want, without needing to reveal the word itself.
There is one puzzle per day, so you cannot keep guessing for a new word once you have finished that day’s round.
Reading the colored tiles
The clues are the core of the game. The familiar convention is:

- Green: the letter is in the answer and in the correct position.
- Yellow: the letter is in the answer but in a different position.
- Gray: the letter does not appear in the answer.
The 2022 acquisition filing describes the tiles as indicating letter matches and correct position, but the color names above come from the game’s familiar convention rather than a quoted interface string. If you are quoting labels for a guide, check the game’s current instructions first.
Why the shared daily answer matters
Because everyone solves the same puzzle, results are directly comparable. Players can post a grid of colored squares that shows how many guesses they needed, and friends can compare their results without spoiling the word. Josh Wardle, who created the game, has said the shared format was central to its spread:
“One thing that is interesting to reflect on, though, is that Wordle could be one a day, but if everybody was getting a different word on that day — if the word was random but you could still only play one — it wouldn’t have caught on the way it has. Right? It’s something about the fact that it’s one puzzle, and everybody is solving it.” (TechCrunch interview, January 12, 2022)

An early player was the first to share results manually as emoji grids, and Wardle then built that format into the game. The USPTO filing that reproduces the acquisition history credits the emoji sharing with much of the growth.

Who made it
Josh Wardle built Wordle for himself and his partner, who enjoyed word games. In his January 2022 TechCrunch interview, he said the couple liked the one-puzzle-a-day model of NYT’s games and that the shared puzzle drove its social spread. He made the game public in 2021. Sources disagree on the exact release month, so this guide does not give one.
How The New York Times came to own it
The New York Times acquired Wordle and its associated intellectual-property rights in January 2022 and incorporated it into NYT Games. Jonathan Knight, general manager of NYT Games, described the move in the acquisition announcement as reproduced in the USPTO filing:

At the time, NYT said the game would remain free and that gameplay would not change. That is a statement from 2022. It does not guarantee current access terms, so check the official game before assuming how it is offered today. Wardle had earlier said of his approach: “I like giving it away for free — part of the point is it’s free.” (TechCrunch interview, January 12, 2022)

Several independent sites use the Wordle name. The best-known alternative is Wordle Unlimited, a fan-made, browser-based site that its own About page describes as free and unaffiliated with The New York Times. The two differ in several ways:

Wordle: The Party Game
The USPTO filing states that NYT partnered with Hasbro on a physical board-game version, “Wordle: The Party Game.” It is a option for in-person group play. Check the exact edition, current availability and retailer listings before buying, since this guide does not establish them. You do not need it to play the daily online game.
What the sources cannot confirm today
- The current player count or any audited usage figure.
- Current access requirements, including whether an account is needed.
- The exact public-release month in 2021.
- Current availability or pricing of the party game.
The most reliable checks are the official game’s own instructions and terms, which reflect current rules and access in a way the 2022 and 2024 sources cannot.
