Microsoft says it is being designed to play Xbox console and PC games, and has confirmed a custom AMD-based system-on-chip co-designed for the next generation of DirectX. Price, release timing, final specifications and the details of game compatibility have not been announced in the cited material.
What is Xbox Helix?
Project Helix is Microsoft’s name for its next-generation Xbox console. On March 11, 2026, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft’s later developer-facing description confirmed a custom AMD-based SoC and co-design for the next generation of DirectX.
Those statements establish the product’s broad direction, not a complete product specification. Microsoft has not described Helix’s final retail name, interface, game catalog, launch date or price in the announcements cited here.
What Microsoft has confirmed
- It is a next-generation Xbox console. Microsoft has described Project Helix as its next-generation console and placed it within the company’s broader hardware plans. Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 announcement introduced the project.
- Its stated game ambition includes Xbox console and PC games. Ronald’s announcement says Helix is designed to play both. Xbox’s March 25 update restated that goal. Neither statement lists supported games or explains how compatibility will work.
- It uses a custom AMD-based SoC. Microsoft Game Dev’s April 30, 2026 description says the chip is co-designed for next-generation DirectX. It discusses developer optimization and iteration, but gives no consumer-facing component breakdown or benchmark figures.
- It belongs to a broader Xbox strategy. In an April 23, 2026 corporate statement, Xbox describes console as foundational while also discussing cloud access to Xbox experiences on other devices. That company-wide strategy should not be mistaken for confirmation that Helix itself has a particular cloud feature.
How could Helix differ from current Xbox devices?
The clearest announced distinction is its intended platform scope: Microsoft names both Xbox console and PC games. That suggests a more PC-connected direction than readers might assume from a conventional console, but it does not confirm that Helix will behave like a Windows PC, support every PC game, or offer any particular storefront or interface.

What “leading performance” means—and does not mean
Ronald said Helix would deliver “leading performance.” That is Microsoft’s stated ambition, not an independently measured result. The announcements cited here do not provide comparable performance data against Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation consoles, gaming PCs or handhelds, so there is not yet a sound basis for ranking Helix against them.
Microsoft Game Dev’s SoC and DirectX description signals a hardware and software platform being developed with developers in mind. It does not establish specific frame rates, resolutions, graphical features or a performance advantage.

- How Xbox and PC game support will work, including supported storefronts and the breadth of the catalog.
- Which existing Xbox games will be compatible; the stated goal is not confirmation of full backward compatibility.
- Whether current Xbox controllers and other accessories will work with Helix.
Xbox’s June 7, 2026 showcase recap announced the Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition and a limited-edition anniversary console planned for select markets in November. It did not announce Helix compatibility for that controller or other accessories, so the controller should not be treated as a confirmed Helix accessory.
