Most Xbox One games work on Series X|S, but Xbox 360 and Original Xbox support is limited to selected titles. If you own game discs, note this before choosing a console: Series S has no disc drive.
Check game compatibility by exact title
Start with Xbox’s backward-compatibility library. Use its generation filters to find the specific game, then check the page’s excluded-games information if it is not listed. Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S, but “most” is not a guarantee for every title. Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games are supported selectively, so do not assume a game works because another title from the same generation does.
Support does not promise identical features in every game. Xbox notes that some game-specific features vary and that a download is required. Its FAQ also says Original Xbox online Xbox Live services and in-game marketplaces are unavailable in backward-compatible play.
Match the game to your ownership format and console

These steps apply only to games supported on Series X|S; owning a digital license or disc does not itself establish compatibility. Xbox says backward compatibility for supported games already owned has no extra cost. Online console multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass, sold separately.

Check an accessory by model and connection
Write down the accessory’s exact model, whether it is officially licensed for Xbox, how it connects, and whether it needs firmware. Compare those details with the product packaging or the manufacturer’s current support information rather than relying on a broad claim that “Xbox One accessories work.”
Xbox Wire’s September 2, 2020 guidance says officially licensed Xbox One accessories connected by wire or USB wireless work on Xbox Series X. It separately says headsets plugged into the Xbox Wireless Controller’s 3.5 mm port are supported. Some headsets using optical audio may need a firmware update. Because that guidance is dated and its broad accessory statement specifically names Series X, confirm the exact product and console model before relying on it for a particular setup. Xbox lists the Xbox Adaptive Controller for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It is designed to connect assistive switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks. For any setup, check the compatibility of the specific attached devices as well as the controller.

A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Choose the exact destination model: Series X or Series S. If you need to use game discs, rule out Series S.
- Identify each game’s generation and check its exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatible library and excluded-games information.
- For each supported game, establish whether your ownership is digital or on disc. Use Ready to Install for a digital title; for a disc title, make sure the console has a drive and retain the disc for play.
- For each accessory, confirm its model, license status, connection type, required firmware, and compatibility with your specific console.
