In Minecraft Java Edition, the main items normally unavailable in Survival are special building and mapmaking blocks—such as barriers, command blocks and structure blocks—plus the knowledge book and debug stick. “Command-only” is a useful shorthand, but not a perfect one: some of these can also be accessed through Creative inventory when cheats or the right permissions are enabled. Availability can vary by version and world settings.
Main items unavailable in ordinary Survival
The Minecraft Wiki’s Content inaccessible in Survival overview, updated September 25, 2026, identifies these as prominent creative and mapmaking items that cannot be encountered as obtainable items in normal Survival play:
- Barrier — an invisible block used to restrict movement or mark boundaries.
- Structure void — a structure-building utility block.
- Light — an invisible light-emitting block.
- Command blocks — impulse, chain and repeating variants, used to run commands in a world.
- Structure block — a tool for saving, loading and managing structures.
- Jigsaw block — a block used in assembling structures.
- Knowledge book — a special item associated with recipe unlocking.
- Debug stick — a Java-exclusive tool for editing block states.
This is a practical list of the prominent examples, not a guaranteed timeless or exhaustive total. The cited overview is fan-maintained, marked as a work in progress, and discusses availability that can depend on version, permissions and world history.
How you can access them
For these special items, command access and Creative access are related but not identical. Commands may require cheats or operator privileges; some items may also be available through Creative inventory only when the player has appropriate permissions. The Debug Stick page specifically says it can be obtained with commands such as /give or /item, or from Creative inventory with appropriate permissions. It also says the stick is available only in worlds with cheats on and functions only in Creative with cheats enabled—not in Survival or Adventure. Do not confuse an unobtainable item with a block in the world
A block can generate or appear in a Survival world without dropping its own collectible item form. The Survival-inaccessible overview separately lists examples such as bedrock, reinforced deepslate, budding amethyst, chorus plant, dirt path, end portal frame, farmland, infested blocks and monster spawner. These are a related but different case: encountering the block does not mean Survival lets you collect and keep that block as an item.
Snapshot access can be temporary
Older snapshot information should not be mistaken for current release behavior. In its May 12, 2021 announcement for Java Snapshot 21w19a, Mojang said, “Starting with this snapshot, Candles, Bundles, and Sculk Sensors are only accessible through commands.” That was a statement about that snapshot: the announcement explained that the unfinished items had been removed from Creative inventory, and recipes for candles and bundles had been removed. It is not evidence that those items remain command-only in current Java versions.

Check your version and world settings
Before relying on any list, check the precise Java version you are playing and whether your world permits cheats or grants the required operator permissions. This matters especially in snapshots, older worlds and cases where the item form differs from a block already present in the world.
