The three-word phrase highlighted in Catherine Varitek’s reported reply was “smartest man in baseball.” Her comment was reported amid Boston’s April 2026 coaching overhaul, not after a postseason elimination.
What did Catherine Varitek say?
MassLive, in a report republished by Yahoo Sports, reproduced Catherine Varitek’s reply to a fan urging her husband to return to the Red Sox: “They have the ‘smartest man in baseball’ running the show… they’ll be OK without Jason, that’s what they wanted. It’s what’s best for the team.” (Yahoo Sports)
The “three-word reaction” refers to “smartest man in baseball.” The quoted wording was reported by MassLive/Yahoo; the original X post was not directly verified, so its timestamp and full thread are not established.
Who was the remark about?
Catherine did not name anyone in the quoted reply. The report suggested Craig Breslow, Boston’s chief baseball officer, might be the intended target, but that is an interpretation rather than a confirmed identification. (Yahoo Sports)

Why was Jason Varitek’s role in question?
In April 2026, Boston dismissed manager Alex Cora and several coaches as part of an in-season overhaul, and Varitek was reassigned from his on-field coaching role. Boston.com reported on April 26 that his future role remained unclear. Breslow said, “We’re still working through that and having conversations,” adding that the conversations were “best handled in private.” (Boston.com)
FanGraphs described the changes as a response to Boston’s poor start and reported the team’s record as 10–17 on April 27, 2026. That is a contemporaneous snapshot, not a current record. (FanGraphs)

Was the comment made after postseason elimination?
The reporting available places the remark in the context of the April 2026 in-season coaching changes. It does not establish that Catherine posted it after Boston was eliminated from postseason play. Her initial message, according to Boston.com, thanked Red Sox fans for supporting her husband; later coverage reported the sharper reply to a fan calling for his return.
