John Needham’s central argument was that esports should grow from a way to engage players into a sustainable business that can support teams and competitors. In his 2021 GamesBeat interview, he described break-even economics as a goal—not a claim that League of Legends esports was already profitable. Riot’s 2023–2025 updates show how the company has pursued that goal, but they describe plans and reported audience measures, not proof that the model has succeeded.
What did John Needham say about esports’ future?
In a November 2021 interview with GamesBeat, Riot’s then-president of esports, John Needham, argued that esports could become more than a tool for keeping players engaged with a game. Riot wanted the business to reach break-even economics and create a sustainable ecosystem for teams and athletes. The distinction matters: the interview set out an ambition, not evidence that League of Legends esports was already profitable. GamesBeat’s interview was published November 21, 2021, and updated June 20, 2025.
Needham also positioned esports within a wider player experience. Games, entertainment, and live competition were connected parts of how fans engage with Riot’s titles, rather than esports operating as a self-contained product. In that framing, competition can deepen a game’s community and visibility, while the business still has to find revenues that can sustain its teams and events.
What did Riot report about revenue and viewers in 2021?
GamesBeat reported Needham saying Riot esports revenues had grown about 70% annually over the preceding four years. The interview did not provide a revenue denominator or audited financial statements, so the figure should be read as Needham’s reported growth claim, not as an independently verified market measure.

The same article said more than 4 million people outside China watched the latest Worlds, which concluded November 5, 2021. That number refers to viewers outside China for that event; it is not a worldwide total or a measure of average audience across Riot esports.
How did Riot describe its sustainability plans after the interview?
2023: build capabilities for fans and the business
In an April 2023 post, Needham expanded on Riot’s long-term sustainability argument, describing a business that should work for teams, players, and fans. He said Riot planned to develop capabilities including a watch platform and virtual ticketing. Those were stated plans, not confirmation that the products had launched or delivered particular financial results. In the same post, he wrote: “We truly believe that we are building the Future of Sport at Riot Games. Our growing audience is young, connected, social, playing games, and watching tons of gaming content on streaming platforms.” Riot Games published the post on April 19, 2023.

2024: more predictable team revenue and fan-supported upside
In March 2024, Riot described a proposed League of Legends esports team model intended to provide more predictable revenues, with potential additional upside from digital items supported by fans. The design addresses two different needs: teams benefit from revenue they can better plan around, while fan-supported items can connect a team’s earnings to audience enthusiasm. Riot’s description does not establish how much teams ultimately earned under the model.
Riot also said it invests hundreds of millions of dollars annually in LoL Esports. That is the company’s stated investment, not an independently audited figure in the announcement. For audience context, Riot reported year-over-year Average Minute Audience growth of 58% for MSI 2023 and 65% for Worlds 2023. These are event-specific average-minute audience comparisons, not total viewer counts or evidence of growth across the esports market. Riot laid out the strategy and figures in its March 14, 2024 post.

2025: betting sponsorships with stated limits
In June 2025, Riot announced betting sponsorship opportunities for Tier 1 League of Legends and VALORANT teams in the Americas and EMEA. Riot presented the category as a way for teams to benefit financially and said safeguards would protect competitive integrity and the fan experience. The eligibility is limited to those teams and regions; the announcement does not describe a blanket policy for every Riot league or market. Needham wrote: “We’re opening up betting sponsorship opportunities for Tier 1 LoL and VALORANT teams in the Americas and EMEA with safeguards to protect competitive integrity and the fan experience.” The policy appeared in Riot’s June 26, 2025 announcement.

The cited statements do not establish that Riot esports—or League esports specifically—was profitable. Needham’s 2021 break-even language described a target, and Riot’s later posts discussed investments, audience trends, business-model changes, and new sponsorship opportunities. Those facts indicate strategic efforts to improve sustainability, but they are not profit-and-loss results.

What the strategy suggests—and what remains unproven
- From engagement to a business: Riot’s original challenge was to make competition valuable beyond its role in supporting a game. The sustainability goal depends on building revenue that can support the ecosystem, not just attracting viewers.
- Predictability plus upside: The 2024 team model pairs more predictable revenue with possible fan-supported digital-item income. Riot’s announcement describes the model’s intent, not a demonstrated financial outcome.
- Sponsorship with guardrails: The 2025 betting category adds a potential revenue avenue for a limited set of Tier 1 teams, alongside safeguards Riot says are intended to protect integrity and fans.
- Audience growth is not profitability: Riot’s reported 2023 Average Minute Audience increases show event-level audience growth, but do not reveal the costs, revenue, or margins behind those events.
