Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia action RPG from S-GAME. Its combat is built around fast, cinematic martial-arts exchanges in which you dodge, deflect, counter and attack in continuous combinations. More than 30 main weapons, Phantom Edges, accessories, ranged attacks and summons are intended to let players shape different combat styles. The setting, marketed as “Kungfupunk,” combines Chinese martial-arts tradition with punk fantasy, machines, mechanical prosthetics and industrial ruins.

The game is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. S-GAME and PlayStation list October 29, 2026, while Steam lists October 28, 2026; the correct date may depend on platform or region and should be checked close to launch.

What kind of game is Phantom Blade Zero?

The most precise description is wuxia action RPG. PlayStation calls it “a dark wuxia action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5,” while Steam lists Action RPG and RPG as its store genres. Steam also uses user-defined tags including Martial Arts, Wuxia, Souls-like, Hack and Slash, Singleplayer and Third Person. Those tags are useful shorthand, but they are not a formal genre declaration from S-GAME.

In practical terms, Phantom Blade Zero combines a real-time melee action game with RPG-style character and equipment choices. The emphasis is on learning enemy behavior, choosing a weapon setup and executing attacks or defensive responses quickly, rather than selecting commands from a turn-based menu. Its wuxia identity comes from the martial-arts world, wandering swordsmen and stylized techniques; the RPG layer comes through weapon upgrades, accessories and other ways to customize a build.

#1 Best Overall

“Souls-like” and “hack-and-slash” are therefore comparison labels, not a complete definition. The announced combat stresses speed, elaborate chains and cinematic movement as much as deliberate defense. Until the finished game is tested, it is not possible to say how closely its checkpoints, penalties, stamina systems or boss structure match any particular Souls-like formula.

A semi-open Wulin rather than one giant map

S-GAME’s 2023 introduction describes the world as a semi-open arrangement of handcrafted maps. That points to connected or individually designed areas with room to explore, rather than one uninterrupted open-world landscape. Because that description was made during the early announcement period, it should not be treated as a definitive account of every final map, optional activity or traversal system.

Story premise: Soul’s 66-day pursuit

You play Soul, a swordsman framed for murdering his master. He survives the accusation but has only sixty-six days left to live. Hunted through the Wulin, he tries to discover who engineered the conspiracy against the martial world and why he was chosen as its scapegoat.

The announced story also includes a mysterious Phantom World, hidden stories and paths that can be uncovered through exploration. That framing gives the game two simultaneous motivations: Soul’s immediate need to survive and investigate before his limited time expires, and the broader mystery surrounding the Wulin. The 66-day figure is a fictional premise for Soul, not a real-world countdown or a confirmed limit on how long a playthrough lasts.

S-GAME founder and CEO Soulframe Liang has described Phantom Blade Zero as a spiritual rebirth of the Rainblood series. The new game is presented as its own dark wuxia action RPG, so knowledge of earlier Rainblood titles is not established as a requirement for understanding the story.

How does the combat work?

The advertised combat loop is simple to describe but demanding to master: read an incoming attack, evade or deflect it, answer with a counter or strike, then continue into a weapon-specific combination. Steam summarizes the intended flow as “Dodge, deflect, counter, and strike in one seamless flow, where victory and defeat are decided in an instant.”

That wording indicates a reaction-focused system in which defense is not merely a pause between attacks. A successful dodge or deflection can create the opening for a counter, and the counter can flow directly into more attacks. The design goal is a continuous exchange rather than a sequence of isolated animations.

Fast combinations with accessible inputs

S-GAME says it studied the speed and extensive move sets of games such as Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden while also recognizing the appeal of more strategic action games. The stated aim is to reproduce the sleek, exaggerated movement of 1990s kung-fu cinema through elaborate chains that can be performed with simplified inputs.

“Simplified inputs” does not mean the combat is intended to be shallow. The announced philosophy is that the basic controls should be approachable while timing, enemy reading and knowledge of each weapon create room for mastery. A newcomer may be able to produce a visually impressive sequence quickly; an experienced player should still have reasons to learn when to evade, when to deflect and which follow-up best suits a particular opening.

Defense is broader than parrying

Official descriptions identify dodging, deflecting, countering and striking as separate parts of the flow. It is therefore misleading to describe Phantom Blade Zero as a parry-only game. The available information does not establish exact input windows, frame data, stamina rules, invulnerability durations or whether every enemy attack can be deflected. Those details will determine how much the final combat favors precise timing over movement and offense, but they have not been specified in the announced material.

Support options beyond the main blade

Combat is not limited to a single sword or a fixed sequence of melee attacks. The official feature descriptions mention primary weapons, secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, ranged attacks and summons. These options suggest that encounters can be approached through different combinations of close-range pressure, defensive timing and support abilities. The sources do not yet provide a complete list of ranged weapons, summons, resource costs or cooldown rules, so those systems should be understood as announced categories rather than fully documented mechanics.

Weapons, Phantom Edges and build experimentation

Weapon variety is one of Phantom Blade Zero’s main RPG features. The August 17, 2026 PlayStation Blog deep dive says exploration can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges. The current PlayStation game page and S-GAME’s Steam listing use a broader formulation of 30-plus primary weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges. The specific count of 25 belongs to the August deep dive; the safest cross-source summary is that the game advertises more than 30 primary weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges.

Source and date Main or primary weapons Phantom Edges How to read the figure
PlayStation Blog deep dive, August 17, 2026 More than 30 25 The most specific announced secondary-weapon count.
Current PlayStation game page 30+ 20+ General feature-page wording that may change.
S-GAME Steam listing More than 30 More than 20 Store-description wording rather than a complete inventory.

“Main weapon” and “Phantom Edge” are presented as distinct categories. The material does not define every category’s moveset, damage profile or role, so a numerical count should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every item plays radically differently. What is clear is that the arsenal is intended to support experimentation instead of a single prescribed sword.

Upgrades, accessories and reforging

Weapons can be upgraded and paired with accessories. S-GAME also says an upgraded weapon can be reforged so that its upgrade materials are recovered and reinvested elsewhere. That system is significant for players who want to test several styles: spending resources on one weapon is not presented as an irreversible commitment.

The announced loop is therefore experimentation rather than a fixed “best build.” You can try a weapon, add an accessory, evaluate how its moves fit your timing and then redirect the recovered materials if another setup suits you better. The sources do not establish the total number of upgrade tiers, accessory slots, material types or whether reforging carries a fee, so those specifics should wait for the final game.

What does “Kungfupunk” mean here?

“Kungfupunk” is S-GAME’s own label for the game’s visual and thematic blend. PlayStation describes traditional martial arts colliding with punk fantasy, cold steel and mechanical prosthetics. Steam adds crumbling industrial ruins, traditional Chinese aesthetics and modern rock music. Liang’s 2023 introduction also refers to Chinese kung fu, intricate machines reminiscent of steampunk and occult arts.

The result is not historical wuxia presented as a documentary reconstruction. It is a stylized world in which classical martial-arts ideas share space with machinery, prosthetic technology and supernatural elements. The contrast between elegant sword forms and harsh industrial environments is part of the game’s identity, while the dark tone comes from Soul’s persecution, the conspiracy in the Wulin and the Phantom World.

How the presentation is made

The PlayStation page says renowned martial-arts choreographers and motion-capture technology are being used to bring kung fu movements to life. In 2023, Liang identified action director Kenji Tanigaki and explained that some combat moves required handcrafted animation because motion capture alone could not reproduce them. These statements describe the developer’s production approach; they are not an independent verification of animation quality.

Platforms, editions and accessibility options

The announced platforms are PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. The PlayStation US page lists Standard and Digital Deluxe editions. Prices, pre-order bonuses and the exact contents of those editions are volatile and should be checked on the relevant storefront immediately before purchase.

The PlayStation listing also describes several practical options:

  • Adjustable difficulty.
  • Control reminders and tutorial reminders.
  • Manual saving.
  • Pausing during offline play.
  • DualSense adaptive-trigger and haptic-feedback support on PS5.

These features indicate that the game is not being presented as an unpausable, one-difficulty challenge. They do not, by themselves, establish the full accessibility menu, remapping coverage, subtitle options or performance modes.

When does Phantom Blade Zero release?

Release information currently differs by platform listing. S-GAME’s creative-director letter dated June 2, 2026 says the launch moved from September 9 to October 29, 2026. The August PlayStation Blog deep dive also gives October 29. Steam displays October 28, 2026. The available announcements do not explain the one-day difference, which could reflect platform or regional timing.

What is confirmed, and what remains unknown?

The announced feature set supports a clear picture of the intended experience, but several details remain unresolved until release or hands-on testing. Confirmed or directly stated elements include:

  • A dark wuxia action-RPG format with third-person combat.
  • Fast combinations built around dodging, deflecting, countering and striking.
  • More than 30 primary weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges, with 25 Phantom Edges specified in the August 2026 deep dive.
  • Weapon upgrades, accessories, ranged attacks, summons and material-recovery through reforging.
  • A semi-open arrangement of handcrafted maps in the early world description.
  • PlayStation 5 and Steam versions, with the platform options listed on the PlayStation page.

The sources do not establish frame-level timing, stamina behavior, exact enemy design, final map count, launch performance, graphics modes, review consensus or whether every announced system will function identically on both platforms. Claims about difficulty, balance or the superiority of one weapon should therefore wait for the finished game.

Who is the combat aimed at?

Phantom Blade Zero is aimed at players who want the spectacle and speed of cinematic martial arts but also want meaningful choices in weapons and equipment. Its simplified-input goal may make elaborate attacks approachable, while the number of weapons, defensive responses and upgrade paths gives experienced players reasons to refine their execution.

Players seeking a strictly historical wuxia setting may find the machines, prosthetics, occult elements and rock soundtrack unexpected; those contrasts are central to the Kungfupunk concept. Players looking for a conventional open-world RPG should also note the semi-open, handcrafted-map description rather than assuming a single huge map. Conversely, anyone who enjoys comparing builds, learning enemy tells and switching weapons has a clear reason to watch the system closely.

Bottom line

Phantom Blade Zero is best understood as a fast, dark wuxia action RPG with Souls-like and hack-and-slash comparison points rather than a narrow imitation of either. Its combat is built around reading attacks, choosing between evasion and deflection, converting openings into counters and extending those moments through weapon-specific combos. More than 30 primary weapons, at least 20 Phantom Edges, accessories, ranged attacks, summons and reversible upgrade investment are designed to let players express different styles. The final test will be how those advertised ideas feel in actual encounters, but the announced identity is clear: cinematic kung-fu action set in a mechanical, industrial “Kungfupunk” world.
