Pikachu is not a real squirrel or animal species. Its design was influenced in part by squirrels, but the Pokémon franchise classifies it as the “Mouse Pokémon.” Those descriptions refer to different things: design inspiration and fictional category.
Why is Pikachu associated with squirrels?
Pikachu designer Atsuko Nishida described squirrels as part of her inspiration. In an interview published by The Pokémon Company International, she said: “I didn’t own a squirrel, but I wanted to because I thought its movement was comical.” Read the official creator profile.

That comment supports calling Pikachu’s design squirrel-inspired; it does not mean Pikachu is a squirrel or that the franchise gives it a squirrel classification.
What is Pikachu’s Pokémon classification?
A Pokémon handbook published by Scholastic UK and McDonald’s in 2022 labels Pikachu the “Mouse Pokémon.” It also lists Pikachu’s type as Electric. “Mouse Pokémon” is an in-universe franchise category, not a scientific identification of a real animal. See the 2022 handbook.

How can both descriptions be correct?
- Design influence: Nishida cited squirrels and their comical movement as an inspiration.
- Fictional category: Pokémon materials identify Pikachu as the “Mouse Pokémon.”
So the concise answer is: Pikachu is squirrel-inspired in design, but its Pokémon classification is Mouse Pokémon. Neither description makes it a real squirrel or mouse.
