In the post-1.18 Minecraft Overworld, aim for around Y=96. The official Java Edition 1.18 release notes say coal generates above height 0 with a strong bias toward height 96 and above, so Y=96 is the most practical single target. Higher terrain also yields coal, and the sections below explain how to search for it and why some deposits will not appear on an open cave wall.
What the official notes say about coal height
The Minecraft: Java Edition 1.18 release notes describe coal as generating above height 0, with a strong bias toward height 96 and above. The Snapshot 21w37a notes describe the same distribution change. These two official pages are the basis for the guidance here.
The official notes describe a bias rather than a single peak number. The figure “Y=96” as the best level comes from a secondary reference, the Minecraft Ore Distribution tool (26.3 edition), which identifies Y=96 as the peak for coal. Use Y=96 as a practical aim point, not as a measured percentage of coal blocks. The cited sources do not publish a per-level block count for coal, so no fixed number of ore blocks at any height can be promised.
Coal also appears above the target
Because the bias runs toward Y=96 and above, hills, mountains and high cliffs are worth scanning even if you never dig to the target height. Coal is not limited to a narrow band: the official notes start the distribution at Y=0 and describe the high end as a bias, not a hard ceiling. If you are on high ground and see coal in a cliff face, that is consistent with the official distribution.

Why not every coal deposit shows on a cave wall
Under post-1.18 generation, coal is less likely to be exposed to air than it was under earlier generation guidance. Some deposits therefore sit inside solid stone or underwater rather than on a visible cave surface. An empty cave wall at Y=96 does not prove that coal is absent at that height; you may need to open a new tunnel to find it.
How to search at a target height
- Show your coordinates. In Java Edition, press F3 to open the debug screen. The position line reads as three numbers (X, Y, Z); the middle number is your Y coordinate.
- Move to a height of Y=96. Dig a horizontal tunnel at that level, or walk a cliff or cave wall that reaches it.
- Scan the surrounding stone. Coal appears as stone with dark speckles.
- If the first tunnel shows nothing, dig a second tunnel a few blocks away at the same height, or check higher terrain. Because of reduced air exposure, one empty wall is not conclusive.
Edition and version limits
- Version: The guidance applies to post-1.18 Overworld generation. Older pre-1.18 advice about ore heights may not match current world generation.
- Edition: The official distribution notes cited here are Java Edition sources. Bedrock Edition values were not verified against those notes, so do not assume the same figures apply on Bedrock.
- Source type: Y=96 as the “best” level is a secondary reading of the official bias. The official pages describe the bias, not a single optimal level.
Why there is no single best level for every ore
Coal’s Y=96 target does not transfer to other ores. The official Minecraft release article for Caves & Cliffs: Part II states: “There is no longer a single height level that is best for all ores – you need to make tradeoffs!” If you are mining several ore types in one trip, plan your depth around the ore you need most.

Choosing a search method
Two approaches are practical for coal: digging to a chosen height, or scanning natural high terrain. The cited sources do not measure yield for either method, so compare them on effort and visibility rather than expected return.

For most players, a combined approach works: scan high terrain first because it is cheaper, then dig a tunnel at Y=96 if you need more coal.
