For modern Minecraft world generation (1.18 and later), mine underground around Y=16 for iron ore. Near tall mountains, iron also becomes more common at higher elevations; a Minecraft Wiki mining tutorial identifies another peak around Y=232. These are generation patterns, not proof of the fastest iron-per-hour route.
Why Y=16 is the underground target
Mojang’s Minecraft 1.18 release notes say iron ore generates below height 72, with a strong bias toward height 16. The official snapshot notes describe the same lower-band bias. For ordinary underground mining, Y=16 is therefore the straightforward level to aim for.
Iron is not limited to that level: the official release notes also say it generates above Y=80, with more iron as elevation increases. A Minecraft Wiki mining tutorial summarizes the high-altitude peak as around Y=232. That exact upper peak is community-reported; Mojang’s cited release description establishes the increasing upper band, not the precise peak coordinate.
Choose between underground mining and mountain exploration

The sources describe where iron generates, but do not compare safety, route efficiency, or iron gathered per hour for these options. They do not establish one method as universally fastest.

Check your Minecraft version before using old advice
This recommendation applies to the modern Overworld generation introduced in Minecraft 1.18 and later. Version 1.18 changed ore generation alongside the expanded world height and introduced multiple distribution bands, so advice written for older world generation may point to different levels. Mojang also notes that there is no longer one best height for every ore.
