The Wii U is backward-compatible with nearly all Wii software through its Wii Mode, along with nearly all Nintendo Wii accessories. It does not run GameCube games or accessories, and the compatibility is one-way: Wii U games cannot be played on a Wii. Whether a particular Wii game works with a particular accessory depends on that game.
What the Wii U can play from the Wii library
Nintendo says the Wii U is backward-compatible with “almost all Wii games and accessories” (Nintendo UK, Backwards compatibility | Wii U). The qualifier matters. Nintendo’s wording is “nearly all” and “almost all,” not “all,” so a specific Wii title should be checked before you assume it will run.
The compatible software falls into three groups that Nintendo itself describes:
- Wii game discs. Physical Wii Game Discs are played through Wii Mode.
- WiiWare. Downloadable WiiWare titles are supported in Wii Mode.
- Virtual Console titles. Titles that Nintendo sold for Wii are also supported in Wii Mode.
Wii U games are a separate category. They run only on Wii U, and the original Wii cannot play them (Nintendo of America, Can I Play Wii U Games On the Wii?). Nintendo of America states: “No. Wii U games can only be played on the Wii U.”

How to start Wii software on Wii U
Wii Mode is controlled with a Wii Remote, so the Remote is the one piece of hardware you need before anything else. Nintendo’s current support instructions cover the process (Nintendo of America, How to Play Wii Games on the Wii U):
- Sync a Wii Remote to the Wii U first, following the sync steps in Nintendo’s support instructions.
- For a Wii game disc, insert the disc and launch it as usual. The Wii U switches into Wii Menu.
- For downloaded Wii software, select the Wii Menu icon from the Wii U Menu.
- In Wii Menu, use the Wii Remote to select the disc or channel you want, then play.
The GamePad can show Wii software on its own screen, or mirror it alongside the television, but it cannot control that software. Every input has to come from a Wii Remote or a game-specific accessory.

Which accessories work
Nintendo lists Wii Remotes, Nunchuks, Classic Controllers and Wii Balance Boards as compatible with the Wii U (Nintendo of America, Compatible Wii Accessories). That list describes what the console supports, not what every game requires. The table below separates console support from the game-level checks you still need to make.
| Item | Status on Wii U (per Nintendo) | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wii Remote | Supported; required to start and navigate Wii Mode | Sync before use |
| Wii Remote Plus | Supported; may be required by some Wii software | Confirm in the game’s manual |
| Nunchuk | Supported by the console | Needed only by games that use it |
| Classic Controller | Supported by the console | Needed only by games that use it |
| Wii Balance Board | Supported by the console | Needed only by games that use it |
| Wii Speak | Works with Wii titles only | Not usable with Wii U titles |
| Licensee (third-party) accessories | Not covered by Nintendo’s list | Check with the accessory’s manufacturer |
| Wii U GamePad | Display only for Wii software | Cannot control Wii software |
| GameCube controllers and accessories | Not supported | None |
For the Wii titles themselves, the game’s manual is the reliable reference. An accessory that is listed as compatible with the console may still be unnecessary for, or unusable with, a given game.

GameCube games and accessories
Wii U does not support GameCube games or accessories. Nintendo UK’s support page states this directly: “Wii U does not support Nintendo GameCube games or accessories” (Nintendo UK, Can I use Nintendo GameCube games and accessories on Wii U?). A GameCube controller will not work with Wii U or with Wii software on it. Readers looking for GameCube play need a separate platform.
Features that do not carry over
Wii Mode does not recreate every feature of a Wii console. Nintendo’s list of unsupported Wii features includes System Settings, disc update features, WiiConnect24 features, the Forecast Channel, Internet Channel, News Channel, Photo Channel, Everybody Votes Channel and Gift Giving (Nintendo of America, What Wii Features Are Not Supported by the Wii U?). If a Wii game depends on one of these, it may behave differently or not work as it did on a Wii.

Moving Wii data to Wii U
A Wii-to-Wii U transfer is a separate process from playing a Wii disc. It can move eligible data, but the data is permanently deleted from the source Wii and cannot be moved back. Nintendo’s transfer instructions also list prerequisites covering hardware, SD card, internet, television and account, so review them before you start (Nintendo of America, How to Transfer Content from a Wii to a Wii U).
Wii Shop Channel and purchase access
Nintendo’s UK backward-compatibility page says the Wii Shop Channel was scheduled to close in 2019. That is a historical statement, and the official pages reviewed for this article do not confirm current access to past Wii Shop purchases or account-specific redownloads. Before counting on a redownload, check your account status with Nintendo.
