In modern Minecraft Overworld worlds, mine at Y -58 or Y -59 for diamonds. Diamond ore becomes more common as you go deeper, while bedrock starts at Y -60, making those two levels practical targets.
Why Y -58 or Y -59 is a practical target
Mojang’s Minecraft 1.18 Caves & Cliffs: Part II release notes say: “Diamond Ore generates below height 16, with more Diamond Ore the lower you go.” The Minecraft Wiki identifies Y -58 and Y -59 as preferred mining levels because bedrock starts generating at Y -60.
The sources do not establish a measured yield difference between -58 and -59. Choose either level; both keep your tunnels just above the bedrock layer.
How to mine at those levels
- Check your current Y coordinate. On Java Edition, press F3 to open the debug screen; on Bedrock Edition, enable Show Coordinates in the world settings.
- Dig down safely to Y -58 or Y -59, then make a horizontal tunnel through deepslate.
- Make branch tunnels off the main passage to expose more solid rock. Mojang’s 21w40a snapshot notes describe the revised ore distribution as making deep branch mining more rewarding.
Why cave walls may not show every diamond
Mojang’s 1.18 release notes also say diamond ore has reduced air exposure. Some ore is therefore buried in solid rock rather than visible on cave walls. Not seeing diamonds exposed in a cave does not mean the area contains none; a tunnel through deepslate can reveal deposits hidden from open air.

Which Minecraft versions this advice covers
This recommendation reflects the modern Overworld generation introduced with Minecraft 1.18. If a later update changes ore placement, consult the release notes for the version you are playing. The official 1.18 guidance establishes that diamonds become more common with depth; the specific -58/-59 targets are the Wiki’s practical interpretation of that trend and the bedrock boundary.
