Rod Humble’s 2023 interview remains a record of the design the team intended to pursue—not a description of a finished, playable game.
What was Life by You supposed to be?
In a March 2023 interview with GamesBeat, Rod Humble described Life by You as a life simulator that would put freedom and control at its center. Rather than confining play to discrete lots or scenes, its planned world was open, with characters simulated simultaneously while the player was in-game and no loading screens between areas. Players were meant to control different people, shape households and homes, and build stories through relationships, jobs and everyday routines.
Those details describe the project’s intended design as Humble presented it, not features verified in a released build. The GamesBeat interview captures the ambition: make a life sim that feels less like moving between authored activities and more like directing a continuous, customizable world.
How was its approach meant to differ?
Humble’s pitch connected several design choices: an open world, direct control over characters, extensive customization, creation tools and a single-player structure. The distinctions below are comparisons of stated intentions, not of hands-on gameplay; Life by You never reached release.

Why did Humble emphasize modding and creation?
Humble framed Life by You not just as a game to customize, but as a platform for content made by players. He said the development team intended to include tools for editing core parts of gameplay—including worlds, businesses, careers and conversations—so players could create and share experiences beyond the original design.
He also discussed AI-assisted content as one possible part of that creation ecosystem, while distinguishing it from generative AI built into the game experience: he said the team did not necessarily want the latter. That distinction matters. The interview describes an aspiration for player-facing creation tools; it does not establish that these tools or AI features were completed or released.

Why was Life by You designed as single-player?
Humble said the single-player choice reflected privacy and safety. Players might explore personal or sensitive stories, he argued, without wanting other players to observe or interfere. He also said the game could be played offline. These were Humble’s claims in 2023 about the intended experience, not confirmed specifications for a released product.
What happened to Life by You?
Paradox Interactive cancelled the game on June 17, 2024, after delays and a reassessment of the project. Deputy CEO Mattias Lilja called it “an incredibly difficult call to make” and “a clear failure on Paradox’s part to meet both our own and the community’s expectations.” He said the path to a release the company felt confident about was “far too long and uncertain.” The cancellation meant Life by You never reached its announced early-access launch; its proposed release timing and price are not current buying information.

On June 18, Paradox said it would cease operations at Paradox Tectonic, the studio that had led development since 2019. CEO Fredrik Wester said the closure followed cancellation of the studio’s sole project. Paradox’s announcement said 24 people worked there. The company did not publish a player count, development budget or detailed feature-by-feature postmortem in its cancellation announcement. Its separate financial announcement reported a second-quarter 2024 write-down of MSEK 208; that is a reported accounting write-down, not a stated development budget.

The interview is useful for understanding the game’s intended identity: a continuous world, player control across different people, broad customization and tools that would let players alter the simulation itself. It cannot answer how those systems would have performed or fit together in a finished game. Since the project was cancelled before launch, there is no released version to evaluate against Humble’s pitch.
