What Life Is Like Working on a Cruise Ship: Hours, Cabins and Time Off

Working on a cruise ship means living where you work for a contract that can last months. Expect work spread across the week, shifts shaped by your role and ship, and time off in intervals rather than a familiar weekend. Rest and leave rules set minimum protections, but they do not guarantee a particular schedule, cabin arrangement or chance to go ashore.

What is life like working on a cruise ship?

Shipboard work combines a job, accommodation and a close-knit community on the same vessel. Your routine depends on your department, position, ship operations and employer. Unlike many land-based jobs, cruise work commonly runs across all seven days of the week; time away from duty may fall between shifts rather than on fixed weekends.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) describes crew as working seven days a week, with 8–12 hours between shifts and opportunities to go ashore at ports. That is a broad industry description, not a promise of an uninterrupted leisure block or port visit for every crew member. CLIA’s Life Onboard page

How many hours do cruise ship workers work?

There is no single schedule for every cruise ship job. Princess Cruises says its shipboard schedules depend on position and advises applicants to expect seven-day weeks and 10–13 hours of work per day. That range is Princess’s description of its own shipboard jobs, not a universal industry standard. Princess Cruises’ shipboard careers page

International minimum rest rules provide a baseline, not a standard shift pattern. UK Government guidance on seafarer employment says crew are entitled to at least 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period and at least 77 hours in any seven-day period. These are rest entitlements; they do not by themselves promise a conventional day off each week. Which rules apply in practice can depend on the ship’s flag, applicable law and employment agreement. Do cruise ship workers get days off?

Do not assume that “time off” means a full day off. A crew member may have rest between duties while still working elsewhere in the week. The schedule can be split around operational needs, and the sources do not establish one consistent timetable across cruise lines or departments.

UK Government employment guidance describes at least four weeks of paid annual leave, summarized under the Maritime Labour Convention as 2.5 days per calendar month of employment. That leave entitlement is separate from daily and weekly rest requirements; it does not mean workers receive a weekly weekend. Check the applicable rules and written contract for the particular job. How long are cruise ship contracts, and what happens between them?

Contract length and time between contracts vary by cruise line and offer. CLIA’s 2024 brochure gives an average contract length of two to eight months and cites a 60-day break between contracts as an example. It says the break depends on the months worked and varies by cruise line, so neither figure guarantees the rotation for an individual job. Ask for the expected contract and leave pattern in writing. CLIA’s 2024 An Ocean of Opportunities brochure

Do cruise ship workers share cabins?

Cabin conditions are not uniform across ships or positions. The Maritime Labour Convention includes standards covering seafarer accommodation and recreational facilities, but that does not establish one cabin size, privacy level or number of occupants for every cruise job. The International Transport Workers’ Federation describes sharing a small cabin as one possible feature of cruise ship life, not a rule for all crew. Ask the employer about the cabin arrangement and facilities for your specific position before accepting an offer. Can cruise ship crew go ashore in port?

Sometimes, but port calls do not guarantee shore leave. Whether you can leave the ship depends on local restrictions, operational requirements and assigned safety duties. Princess Cruises specifically notes that these factors can keep crew on board. A break between shifts is not necessarily long enough—or scheduled at the right time—for a visit ashore.

Before signing, ask how shore leave works for your role and whether duties or port conditions commonly affect it. Princess also describes crew welfare activities, but the availability of particular activities is employer-specific. Princess Cruises’ shipboard careers page
