Madden NFL 25, Madden NFL 26, and Madden NFL 27 all have a player-career mode called Superstar. In Madden NFL 26 and Madden NFL 27, EA also describes Franchise, the mode for managing a team or coach across seasons. Which one you want depends on whether you want to build one NFL player’s career or run a team.
Which Madden mode is a career mode?
Madden uses two modes that can fit the phrase “career mode,” but they follow different paths:
- Superstar is the player career. Create a player or import an eligible College Football Road to Glory player, then pursue an NFL career. EA describes The League as a single-player career experience; Showdown is the online competitive option. EA’s Superstar guide explains setup and progression.
- Franchise is for managing a coach and team over a season. EA describes choosing or creating a coach, adjusting weekly strategy, managing staff, and running a team. Choose this if you want a management career rather than the story of one athlete.
Which Madden editions have career modes?

This is a supported list of recent editions, not a complete year-by-year history. EA says Madden NFL 26 marked the 20th anniversary of Superstar, but that statement alone does not verify every edition in which a career-like mode appeared, or how its name and format changed over time. What do you do in Superstar?
EA’s guide says you can create a Superstar or import an eligible Road to Glory player, customize the avatar and archetype, and enter an NFL career. Depending on the route into the mode, pre-draft activities may come first. Performance and starting point can influence draft position and how the career begins. During the career, you may compete for a starting role, be traded or released, or try to earn another opportunity after reaching the practice squad.

How to choose the right Madden game
- Choose your kind of career: pick Superstar for one player’s NFL journey; choose Franchise for coach and team management.
- Match the edition to your platform: Madden NFL 25’s launch announcement specifically names PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for its described Superstar features. Do not assume feature parity across platform generations.
- Check the current edition page: EA’s Madden NFL 26 and Madden NFL 27 pages are the best place to verify current mode and platform details before choosing a version.
