What Makes a Direct-Drive Racing Wheel Different from a Belt-Driven Wheel?

A direct-drive wheel connects the rim to the motor shaft; a belt-driven wheel transmits force through a belt and pulleys. Here’s what that can mean for feedback and setup.

A belt-driven racing wheel transfers motor force through a belt and pulleys before it reaches the steering shaft. A direct-drive (DD) wheel attaches the steering wheel directly to the motor shaft, removing that transmission. The difference can make force feedback feel more immediate and preserve finer cues, while torque figures, game support, wheelbase design and mounting all affect the result.

How the two drive systems work

Belt-driven wheelbases

A wheelbase is the powered unit that creates steering resistance and force feedback. In a belt-driven design, the motor turns a belt-and-pulley system connected to the wheel shaft. The belt can damp vibration and help produce smooth feedback. Because it flexes under load, it can also soften small details or make the response around center feel less immediate. Those effects depend on the specific implementation; they do not mean every belt-driven wheel feels vague.

Direct-drive wheelbases

In a DD design, the wheel mounts to the motor shaft, with no belt or gear transmission between motor and rim. Fanatec describes the result as avoiding a belt or gear drive that could dilute force-feedback effects (Fanatec’s DD Pro product page). That is a manufacturer’s description of its technology, not an independent comparative test.

What the difference may feel like in a game

Without a belt transmission between the motor and wheel, changes in steering load and smaller force-feedback cues may feel more immediate or distinct. Depending on the game’s signal and the wheelbase’s motor, firmware and settings, those cues can include road texture, rumble strips, skids or vehicle movement. Direct drive cannot create details that the game does not send, and the mechanism alone does not guarantee a particular feel. Manufacturers also note that motor behavior and signal processing matter; for example, Thrustmaster’s Direct Drive explainer describes information quality, firmware and platform integration as parts of the force-feedback chain.

MOZA R5 Bundle Racing Wheel, Direct Drive Base, Pedals Simulator Kit for PC
  • MOZA R5 Racing Wheel and Pedals Bundle Kit is designed for PC Users (Not Compatible with Xbox and ps), provides an affordable, direct-drive setup force feedback system that transforms your sim racing experience.
  • Direct-Drive Simulator: Delivers smooth, detailed 5.5 Nm peak torque without the mechanical slack or noise of older gear- and belt-driven wheels.
  • Ready-to-Race Kit: Includes the wheel base, MOZA ES Steering Wheel with an aluminum quick-release system, and steel pedals and desk clamp in a single package.
  • ES Wheel: At 280mm (11 inches), the compact diameter gives the motor maximum leverage, ensuring the 5.5Nm force feedback feels crisp, strong, and detailed rather than dampened or weak.
  • SR-P Lite Pedals(No Clutch): Crafted from high-strength steel, this Pedal with throttle and brake feature precise Hall sensors, adjustable spacing and height, customizable output curves, and an anti-slip base—offering reliable, adaptable performance for any setup.

Belt drive remains a capable force-feedback arrangement. Its smoother, damped character may suit players who prefer that feel or want a less demanding setup. Neither drive type guarantees faster lap times: the cited product specifications and manufacturer explanations do not establish a universal speed gain or a controlled head-to-head performance result.

How to compare torque figures

Torque is rotational force, commonly stated by wheelbase makers in newton-metres (Nm). A peak-torque figure and a constant or sustained-torque figure describe different capabilities, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. Thrustmaster’s 2024 technical PDF explains the distinction and notes that the game signal, hardware, firmware and platform integration affect what the driver feels.

Thrustmaster says that DD motors can provide force-feedback torque mainly between 5 and 15 Nm, and describes its T818 as delivering 10 Nm of constant torque. These are the manufacturer’s broad statement and model-specific claim, respectively—not universal ranges or independent comparisons. Check current specifications and how each manufacturer defines its figure.

Example wheelbase Listed torque Support or qualification
Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro 8 Nm peak torque with the included Boost Kit 180 Fanatec lists PS5, PS4 and PC support. Its optional table clamp is sold separately. Fanatec product page
Logitech G PRO DD11 11 Nm Logitech G lists the model as a direct-drive base with adjustable torque and settings. Logitech G product page

These manufacturer-listed figures are examples, not like-for-like independent test results. A larger Nm number by itself does not establish better detail, smoother feedback or a better choice for your games and setup. Product details and availability can change, so confirm the current page for your region before buying.

What to check before choosing

  1. Decide which feel matters to you. Choose based on whether a direct connection and potentially finer, more immediate cues are priorities, or whether you prefer the smoother character a belt can provide.
  2. Compare torque definitions. Check whether the stated Nm figure is peak or constant/sustained, and read the manufacturer’s wording rather than ranking bases by the number alone.
  3. Verify platform and game compatibility. Confirm support for your console or PC, the exact model’s licensing, the games you play and any firmware requirements. Compatibility can vary by product.
  4. Plan the mounting. Check that your desk or cockpit can support the base, whether a clamp is included or sold separately, and whether the mounting hardware fits your setup. Fanatec says the DD Pro’s table clamp is optional.
  5. Check the wider ecosystem. Confirm compatibility among the base, steering wheel, quick release, pedals, shifter and other accessories; adapters and supported combinations can be model-specific.
  6. Set up for safe, usable force. Securely mount the base and choose torque settings appropriate to your setup and comfort. Fanatec warns that rapid wheel movement and strong torque can be dangerous.

Which type should you choose?

Choose a DD wheelbase if a direct motor-to-wheel connection and the potential for more immediate, detailed feedback are important to you—and if the specific base fits your platform, budget and mounting setup. Choose a belt-driven wheelbase if its smoother feel and setup demands better match your preferences. There is no universally correct torque target in the manufacturer material cited here; choose a force level and platform-compatible model that suit the games you play and how you will mount the wheel.
