To enable FPS Boost for a supported game on Xbox Series X, open My games & apps, highlight the game, press the controller’s Menu button, then select Manage game and add-ons > Compatibility options and check FPS Boost. Many compatible games enable it automatically, but some require this per-game switch.
Turn on FPS Boost for a game
- From the Xbox dashboard, open My games & apps.
- Highlight the supported game. You do not need to launch it first.
- Press the controller’s Menu button.
- Select Manage game and add-ons.
- Open Compatibility options.
- Check FPS Boost. Launch or restart the game if needed to see the effect.
The setting is per game, not a console-wide switch. The current menu path is documented by Windows Central; Microsoft’s original Xbox Wire announcement described the Compatibility Options control in the game-management area.

Is FPS Boost automatic?
It is automatic for many compatible games, while other supported titles need the manual toggle above. As examples, a supported-title reference lists Far Cry 4 as automatically boosted to 60 FPS and Fallout 4 as reaching 60 FPS without automatic activation. Those are examples, not a rule for every game; check Compatibility options for the title you have installed.

What if FPS Boost is missing or greyed out?
- Confirm the title is supported. FPS Boost applies only to selected backward-compatible games, not every Xbox Series X game.
- Open the options for the game itself. Highlight the title in My games & apps and use its Manage game and add-ons menu.
- Check for the toggle again. If FPS Boost is not offered there, do not assume a general console setting will enable it.
Microsoft’s Xbox Support page titled FPS Boost and Auto HDR is an official reference, but its accessible page does not provide a readable complete catalog here. Microsoft’s 2021 announcement covered the initial titles rather than a full current list. The installed game’s Compatibility options are therefore the practical way to check availability.

Do you need a 120 Hz TV or monitor?
No, not to enable FPS Boost or benefit from a supported game boosted below 120 FPS. Some games can reach 120 FPS; a display with a 120 Hz refresh rate is needed to see that full output. A lower-refresh-rate display can still show the game, but it cannot display all 120 frames each second.
What changes when FPS Boost is on?
FPS Boost raises the frame rate of selected backward-compatible titles through techniques developed by Microsoft’s backward compatibility team, without requiring a game update or developer work. Microsoft said in its February 17, 2021 announcement that it can nearly double the original frame rate and, in a few instances, quadruple it. Those are descriptions of the feature’s potential, not a guarantee for every game. The same announcement gave New Super Lucky’s Tale as an example that can run up to 120 FPS with FPS Boost.

There can be a visual-quality tradeoff: in some games, FPS Boost removes Xbox One X enhancements on Series X. Windows Central names Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 as examples. If you prefer the original presentation, return to that game’s Compatibility options and uncheck FPS Boost. Compare the two modes by smoothness, image quality, and what your display can show; the preferred setting can vary by title.
