A Soulslike is a game that meaningfully adapts a cluster of design ideas associated with FromSoftware’s Souls games—not a title that must tick every box on a fixed checklist. Deliberate, learnable combat; consequential failure; demanding encounters; and worlds that reward exploration are common ingredients, but games combine them in different ways.
What makes a game a Soulslike?
The label describes a design lineage and family resemblance. A 2024 scholarly synthesis identifies recurring features such as demanding combat, consequential failure, checkpoints, interconnected level design, boss battles, and environmental storytelling, while noting that influenced games can adapt only some of them and keep distinct identities (Springer Nature’s “The Soulsification of video games”).
That is why no single mechanic settles the question. A dodge roll, a punishing boss, or a dark fantasy setting alone does not make a game a Soulslike. The more useful question is whether its combat, failure systems, and world design work together in a recognizable way: encounters teach the player to observe and adapt, setbacks carry consequences, and exploration offers meaningful routes, discoveries, or context.
FromSoftware’s official description calls Dark Souls an action role-playing game and spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls. Its listed features include challenging encounters, bonfires, build choices, online play, and a world of intertwined areas (Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls page). Those are useful reference points, not proof that every element began with Dark Souls or must appear in every later game.

What is different about Soulslike combat?
Soulslike combat commonly rewards reading a situation before committing. Players watch enemy behavior, learn attack timing and openings, manage defensive or other resources, and decide when an attack is worth the risk. If an approach fails, changing equipment, tactics, or the route to the encounter may help more than repeating the same action faster.
Boss fights often concentrate those demands. A boss can test whether the player has learned its patterns, prepared a suitable build, or both. In Elden Ring, players can also explore elsewhere, seek assistance, and return with a different approach. Bandai Namco describes its combat as demanding timing, observation, and patience, while presenting bosses as tests of progression (Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring overview).
This differs from defining combat by speed or difficulty alone. The signature is often the relationship between commitment and information: learning an opponent’s patterns can make a dangerous encounter more manageable, but mistakes still matter.

Why are Soulslike games so hard?
“Hard” is an incomplete description. Difficulty can come from dangerous enemies, limited opportunities to heal or attack safely, unfamiliar routes, and the cost of a mistake. Checkpoints and recovery rules shape how severe those dangers feel; builds, weapons, armor, and other player choices can shape how a challenge is approached.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHidetaka Miyazaki, FromSoftware’s director, described the intended standard in a 2024 Game Informer interview: “When players are killed, and they can understand why they were killed in an instance, and it feels justified – ‘Okay, yeah, that makes sense’ – that’s the game design we’re trying to achieve.” He also described aiming for a learning curve and feedback loop, while acknowledging room for improvement (Game Informer’s Miyazaki interview). That is the developer’s stated design goal, not a guarantee that every player will consider every death fair.
Failure is often meant to provide information for the next attempt: an enemy’s range, a safer opening, or a better way to prepare. In a 2013 interview about Demon’s Souls, Miyazaki encouraged newcomers to learn through failure and said that, in his view, “challenging” means “a lot of fun” (PlayStation.Blog’s interview with Miyazaki). That sentiment describes his perspective; players’ enjoyment will vary.

What happens when you die in a Soulslike?
There is no universal death penalty. One game may make the player retrieve something at the site of death; another may use a different recovery rule or none at all. The return point and what changes when a checkpoint is used also vary, so check a particular game’s systems rather than treating currency retrieval or enemy respawns as genre requirements.
Dark Souls illustrates how a checkpoint can be both relief and trade-off: its publisher says bonfires restore health and magic, while ordinary enemies respawn. The consequence of resting is part of the route-planning and risk calculation, not just a pause between fights (Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls page).

How does world design contribute?
Exploration is more than scenery in many Soulslikes. Branching paths, hidden routes, shortcuts, and environmental details can reward close attention. Discoveries may provide a safer way forward, useful resources, or clues about the world’s history. Combat and exploration reinforce one another: a detour can improve a character’s options, while a difficult encounter can make the player reconsider where to go next.

Interconnected areas and hubs
Dark Souls is presented by Bandai Namco as a seamless world with intertwined areas. But connected maps are not a fixed rule. Asked about the contrast between Demon’s Souls’ hub structure and Dark Souls’ linked locations, Miyazaki said of Bloodborne: “I wanted to take the best of both approaches. So every area is linked in one way or another much like the first Dark Souls, but you also have a hub system like Demon’s Souls” (PlayStation.Blog’s Bloodborne interview). A game can combine map structures rather than choose only one.
Open-world approaches
Elden Ring extends the lineage into an open world. Bandai Namco says players can choose the order in which they tackle challenges and explore beyond a difficult obstacle, while still facing demanding combat (Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring overview). That flexibility is one variation, not a requirement that all Soulslikes be open world.
Online features are optional conventions
Dark Souls includes online messages, player encounters, co-op, and invasions, according to its publisher. These systems can make other players part of the world’s texture, but online play is not necessary for a game to fit the label.

Is every difficult action RPG a Soulslike?
No. Difficulty by itself is too broad a test, and action RPG combat can be challenging for many reasons. Compare how a game handles combat, consequences, checkpoints, exploration, bosses, player builds, and storytelling. The closer several of those systems come to working together in the Souls-associated pattern, the more useful the label becomes. It remains a descriptive category, not an official certification or pass/fail genre test.
How to compare games using the Soulslike label
Use these questions to describe what a game actually asks of its player instead of counting clichés:
- Combat: How much does success depend on timing, reading enemy patterns, resource management, and adapting tactics?
- Failure and checkpoints: What is lost on death, can anything be recovered, where does the player return, and what changes after resting?
- World structure: Are areas interconnected, organized around hubs, or spread across an open world? Can exploration change the order of progression?
- Bosses: Do they test learned patterns, preparation, or both? Can the player take another route or seek assistance?
- Build and player choice: How many viable ways are there to approach a challenge through weapons, armor, abilities, or summons?
- Story delivery: Does the game explain events directly, or ask players to infer context from item descriptions, world details, and character encounters?
These comparison points reflect recurring conventions, not prerequisites. They help explain why two games can both be called Soulslikes while feeling quite different in their maps, combat, or approach to failure.
