It should work for newcomers without prior knowledge and offer fans meaningful recognition, not just a string of familiar scenes.
Start by identifying what makes this game work
There is no single adaptation formula because games offer different things to adapt. PlayStation Productions has described The Last of Us as a game with a strong narrative, world and characters, while Gran Turismo did not have an established story to retell. The studio says its approach starts with “story, characters, and emotion,” but the right balance depends on the source.
That distinction helps explain why fidelity cannot mean the same thing in every case. One adaptation may follow a game’s central plot; another may build a new story around its world, or translate its mood and mechanics into a different kind of screen experience. The useful question is not whether a version copies the game, but whether its choices fit the qualities that made that game compelling. PlayStation Productions’ discussion of adapting games for screen describes balancing what to leave out with additions that television can support, including deeper work for side characters.
Preserve the experience, not every beat
A game’s story and characters matter, but they are not the whole experience. The British Film Institute argues that an adaptation also needs to convey something of what playing feels like. That can mean translating rules, repetition, uncertainty or player attention into screen language rather than reproducing the actions literally.

Make mechanics create cinematic tension
The BFI points to Exit 8, whose source game revolves around walking through a looping passage and spotting anomalies. On screen, repetition and anomaly detection can become a source of claustrophobia and tension. The adaptation is not asking viewers to perform the same task as players; it is finding a cinematic equivalent for the unease that task produces. The BFI’s account is a critical interpretation of the film, not a universal measure of adaptation quality. Read the BFI’s discussion of Exit 8 and game-to-screen adaptation.
Use what film and television do better
Screen adaptations have tools games do not use in the same way: performance, framing, editing, sound and the control of what the audience sees and when. A good adaptation puts those tools to work instead of treating gameplay as a checklist.

Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner of HBO’s The Last of Us, says, “There are things the game can do that we just can’t do as effectively,” and the reverse is also true. In a Television Academy interview published May 23, 2025, he describes using television to expand and visually shape moments, including a game flashback whose screen version could build through imagery and soundtrack. His guiding principle: “We’re obviously trying to tell the story in a different medium, so we just follow our instincts on what would make a great TV show.”
That does not make every change an improvement. An addition or omission is strongest when it serves the screen version’s pacing, perspective or character work while remaining connected to the source’s identity. Change for its own sake is no more faithful than copying scenes without understanding why they mattered.

Make the characters and stakes clear
Viewers need to understand what characters want, what they risk and why their relationships matter. In The Last of Us, the official discussion of the adaptation highlights love, loss, survival and the bonds between characters as sources of emotional weight. Those stakes should come through in the screen story itself, not depend on a viewer knowing the game’s backstory.
Clarity does not require flattening ambiguity or explaining every detail. It means giving the audience enough context to follow a character’s choices and feel their consequences. If a moment matters only because fans remember a particular mission, the adaptation has not yet made that moment work on its own.

A screen adaptation should not require players to do homework. Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog studio head and The Last of Us co-creator, writer and executive producer, put it plainly: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important.” Sony’s interview also notes that experiencing both forms can fill in gaps in the game, suggesting that recognition can deepen the experience without serving as a prerequisite. Read Sony Interactive Entertainment’s interview, published April 25, 2025.
This is a useful test for references and callbacks: do they add texture for fans while remaining intelligible to everyone else? An adaptation can reward familiarity, but it should not mistake recognition for emotional payoff.

A practical framework for judging an adaptation
These questions are a critical framework, not a validated scorecard. They help explain what a particular adaptation succeeds or struggles to translate.
- Source identity: Does it retain distinctive tone, themes, world or emotional experience?
- Purposeful adaptation: Do additions, omissions and changes make sense for the screen format and this material?
- Character and stakes: Can viewers follow the relationships, choices and consequences without relying on game knowledge?
- Cinematic translation: Does the adaptation find visual, sonic, performance or structural ways to evoke the player’s experience?
- Audience access: Can newcomers follow the story, while fans find recognition that adds resonance?
- Format fit: Does the material benefit from the chosen form—film, television or another screen format—rather than being stretched or compressed by default?
The medium-fit question applies in both directions. In a BAFTA panel feature, game writer and director Will Byles observed that a story can work poorly in a game when it conflicts with gameplay or leaves players watching what they should be playing. His comment concerns stories adapted into games, not film adaptations, but it points to a broader principle: story and medium need to work together. BAFTA published the panel feature on August 19, 2025.
