A horror game is survival horror when staying alive is a meaningful part of how you play, not merely what the story is about. Players are often vulnerable, resources are limited, and exploration or puzzle-solving brings them into contact with danger. Those pressures sustain dread by making choices—fight, flee, search, or save supplies—matter. No single mechanic is mandatory; the genre is best understood as a set of overlapping tendencies.
What is survival horror?
Survival horror combines horror with gameplay built around enduring threats. The player may have weapons, but is not necessarily equipped to defeat every enemy or handle every encounter without cost. Moving through dangerous spaces, finding ways forward, and deciding how to use scarce supplies can matter as much as combat.
A practical test is whether the game makes survival pressure part of its moment-to-moment play. If danger affects what the player can do and how they approach the next obstacle, the survival-horror label may fit. A frightening story or unsettling atmosphere alone is not enough to establish the genre: a game in which the player is consistently powerful and combat is abundant may be horror or action horror instead.
This is a useful distinction, not an official rulebook. Survival horror is a flexible category, and individual games can mix its features with action or other genres.

What makes survival matter during play?
Vulnerability and difficult encounters
Survival pressure often begins with limited power. Threats may be dangerous enough that confronting them is a decision rather than an automatic response; avoiding, delaying, or escaping can be viable alternatives. The less reliably a player can dominate threats, the more each encounter can reinforce uncertainty.
In Capcom’s interview about Resident Evil 7, director Koshi Nakanishi connected the ordinary protagonist and first-person perspective with a sense of helplessness. The point is not that every survival-horror game needs an ordinary protagonist or a first-person camera, but that presentation and character power can work together to make danger feel immediate. Capcom’s interview also describes fear and horror as part of the series’ design alongside exploration, puzzles, resource management, and combat.
Resources that make choices consequential
Scarce ammunition and healing supplies can turn a simple question—whether to fight—into a decision about future risk. Spending a resource now may make the next encounter harder; saving it may mean taking a more dangerous route or accepting damage. Limited inventory space can create similar trade-offs by forcing choices about what to carry.

These are common techniques, not requirements. A game can create survival pressure through other constraints, or vary how strict its scarcity is. The defining point is that resources influence the player’s approach to danger rather than functioning as an unlimited backdrop. A Game Developers Conference description of designer Frederick Raynal’s Alone in the Dark postmortem identifies limited ammunition among the conventions associated with the 1992 game.

Searching rooms, reading environmental clues, solving puzzles, and revisiting locations can structure progress. These activities make the environment more than a sequence of combat arenas: the player must investigate it, work out what has changed, and move through spaces where threats may remain.
Capcom names environmental exploration and puzzle-solving among Resident Evil’s pillars. Discussing the 2019 Resident Evil 2, producer Tsuyoshi Kanda described its intended play as “slower paced, resource management, survival-horror adventure gameplay with backtracking metroidvania exploration puzzle-solving.” That is a description of one game’s design, not a checklist every title must follow. The Game Informer interview also captures how exploration and pacing can work alongside horror and combat.

Atmosphere and pacing
Sound, environments, narrative, and timing shape how survival mechanics feel. A quiet corridor can make a limited supply seem precious; a pause before a threat can make the player anticipate danger rather than simply react to it. Atmosphere is not separate from play when it changes how players read a space or weigh a risk.
Is the camera or perspective what defines the genre?
No. Fixed cameras, first-person views, and over-the-shoulder cameras can all support survival horror. Perspective affects what the player can see and how a scene feels, but it does not by itself determine whether the gameplay is survival-focused.
Resident Evil 2 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi made the distinction directly: “Resident Evil 2 2019 is over-the-shoulder plus survival horror.” In other words, the camera style and the kind of play are separate questions. The relevant issue is whether the game uses its combat, resources, exploration, and pacing to make survival matter—not simply where the camera sits. Hirabayashi and Kanda’s interview discusses that specific design.

How is survival horror different from action horror?
The distinction is usually a matter of emphasis rather than a hard boundary. Survival horror tends to make vulnerability, constrained resources, exploration, and suspense central to progress. Action horror tends to give more weight to frequent, direct combat and the player’s ability to overcome threats. A hybrid can draw from both.
When comparing two games, consider these dimensions together:
- Player power: Can the player reliably defeat threats, or are evasion and escape meaningful options?
- Resource pressure: How scarce are ammunition, healing items, or inventory space, and do those limits affect later decisions?
- Progression: Does play rely substantially on exploration, puzzles, clues, and backtracking, or mainly on successive fights?
- Pacing and atmosphere: Does the game build dread through environments, sound, and anticipation, or emphasize frequent action?
- Presentation: How does the camera support the intended experience? Consider this separately from whether the gameplay is shooter-focused.
These questions help describe where a game sits without pretending every title fits a strict binary. A horror game can retain meaningful survival-horror elements while also leaning heavily into action.

Where did the genre come from?
Alone in the Dark (1992) is often treated as an important forebear. The Game Developers Conference’s description of Raynal’s postmortem points to claustrophobic spaces, stories conveyed through objects, limited ammunition, cinematic presentation, and fixed third-person camera angles as conventions associated with the game.
The label was used in the introduction to 1996’s Resident Evil, and that series helped popularize the named category. A 2012 thesis in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona repository discusses both the earlier influence of Alone in the Dark and the later genre framing around Resident Evil. It is more accurate to describe a lineage and a popularizing landmark than to claim one uncontested inventor. The thesis’s discussion of survival-horror games also treats the category as flexible rather than fixed.
