Build around the columns your dice can realistically score: use your commander’s perk, place units where rolls can reach them, and spend Budge and Chrono only when they advance a useful combo. Then grow repeatable Strength, Dice Power or Mult and adapt to the next Pilot’s rule.

Understand how scoring works

Dicevaders is a single-player dice-based roguelike deckbuilder developed by Pengonauts and published by Playstack. The Steam listing gives its release date as September 29, 2026. You draft units, artifacts, Budge and Chrono, then use dice results to activate columns on a turn-based grid. The official Steam listing describes Chrono as a way to reroll dice or restock the shop, and Budge as a way to adjust results toward a desired combination.

The board has six numbered columns. A Base Die showing 2 targets column 2; it does not mean the face itself multiplies damage. Dice Power determines how much Strength contributes when that column scores. For example, a 10-Strength unit scored at 2 Dice Power contributes 20 attack. Units in other columns do not automatically join that score. Mult multiplies that turn’s attack, then resets at turn end. These mechanics are described in the beginner guide updated October 1, 2026.

Compare Total Attack with the current Target Defense across the encounter rather than assuming every planet must fall in one launch. A reliable build needs repeated scoring and some form of scaling: lasting Strength, fresh Mult, more Dice Power, or more chances to score valuable units.

Choose a commander perk you can trigger

Read the starting perk before spending heavily. The updated beginner guide uses Blob Girl as an example: she starts each turn with three Mini-Dice and grants artifact XP in a column after a Mini-Die scores there. That makes Mini-Dice both extra scoring opportunities and a route to artifact growth. The guide’s Broodmother, Spiky Gel and Acid Town examples show one possible chain, not a guaranteed shop sequence.

The developer’s September 19, 2026 Captain spotlight offers another example. The Mothership gives +1 Budge at turn start and funnels +10 XP to an artifact in a column when a pair scores there. The spotlight names Monocle, which lets isolated Base Dice count as pairs, and Rocketship, which grants Strength to a random unit when Budge is used. These effects are worthwhile only if your board can meet their triggers often enough.

Place pieces around reachable columns

Start with columns that useful units and artifacts already occupy. Place new attackers where likely rolls and available Budge can reach them. Group units beneath artifacts that require their own column to score; adjacency alone does not make one column’s units score with another’s.

When an artifact needs a pair or triple, an interior column can be easier to target because a die can be shifted one step from either side. A triple unlocks a locked artifact slot only if it scores in that same column. Check the exact trigger before building around it.

Use Budge and Chrono deliberately

Budge shifts a die’s result one step up or down toward another column. The die becomes cracked and cannot be budged again until rerolled. Use a correction when it makes a valuable pair or triple, opens a needed slot, or activates an artifact—not just to move a die into an empty column.

Chrono is shared between Base Die rerolls and shop refreshes. Freeze dice you want to keep before rerolling the rest. Avoid spending your final Chrono on a shop refresh if an upcoming fight may require a reroll to repair a cracked die. This makes Chrono a reserve to plan around, not simply a way to seek better offers.

Make each shop purchase answer a need

Money left when you leave a shop becomes Mini-Dice rather than carrying forward. Buy a unit, tile, artifact XP or dice-control resource when it addresses a clear need in the build.

  • Build Tile: consider it when there is no room for a valuable unit.
  • Artifact XP: spend it when the next level improves an effect your board actually triggers.
  • Chrono refresh: use it when you can afford something useful among the likely offers. The shop’s lock option can preserve an offer you cannot yet buy.

One guide-described Mini-Dice chain illustrates the trade-offs: Broodmother spends Charge to create Mini-Dice based on Dice Power; Spiky Gel turns received Mini-Dice into Strength; Acid Town uses Mini-Dice scoring to activate units in other columns. It depends on placement, available Charge, random target selection and perk variants, so treat it as a possible build rather than a recipe to force.

Decide whether to skip a defeated planet

The Skip offer improves shop rarity, but accepting it gives up remaining turns that could provide shopping, turn-start effects or unit growth. Leave early when the rarity increase is likely to reveal stronger pieces and you can afford them. Stay when the build still needs purchases or growth. Check the defeated marker and Skip offer in game instead of assuming that matching attack and defense ends the planet.

Prepare for each Pilot’s rule

Inspect the upcoming Pilot and stock the resource that answers its mechanic. The current regular-invasion guide reports these examples; the details are version-sensitive and may change with patches:

  • Noel: Hyperfreeze blocks rerolls, so Budge can provide a one-step correction.
  • Roxy: Base Dice start cracked, which may make Chrono important for rerolling before Budge is available.
  • Kaia: a marked column increases defense when scored with Base Dice.
  • Iris: spawns a Puppet at turn start when none is present.

Those are regular-invasion examples, not a complete route for every difficulty, the True Ending or extended Endless play. Recheck the rules shown in your current version.

Diagnose why your attack is short

  • Mult is high but attack is low: improve Strength or Dice Power on units that actually score.
  • Strong units rarely activate: add ways to score them more often, such as Mini-Dice, Repeat, or effects that score units from another column.
  • You are close to surviving or clearing a turn: a shield may bridge a small gap, but it is temporary. If the encounter is already safe, lasting growth or the resource needed for the next correction may be more useful.

Let the full Base Dice and Mini-Dice chain resolve before comparing Total Attack with Target Defense. For any purchase or placement, weigh how reliably its effect triggers in reachable columns, what it scales, its resource cost, synergy with the commander, and whether the next Pilot disrupts that plan.
