Value depends on the exact card and printing, its condition, collector demand, and recent sales of comparable copies. To estimate a card’s value, identify it precisely, assess its condition, then compare recent completed sales—not just current asking prices.
What a rarity symbol tells you—and what it doesn’t
Rarity is a category assigned to a card, not a price tag or proof of how many copies exist. In its March 30, 2023 explanation of Scarlet & Violet rarity symbols, Pokémon describes these categories:

- Common: a circle.
- Uncommon: a diamond.
- Rare: a star.
- Double rare: two black stars.
- Ultra rare: two shiny foil stars.
- Illustration rare: one shiny gold star.
- Special illustration rare: alternate-art Pokémon ex or Supporter cards.
- Hyper rare: three shiny gold stars.
These symbols and labels apply to the Scarlet & Violet system described by Pokémon. Older sets may use different symbols or labels, and Pokémon TCG Pocket uses a separate rarity display. The category alone does not establish a print run, current scarcity, or resale price.
Identify the exact card before looking up a price
Similar-looking cards can have different values if they come from different sets, have different collector numbers, languages, or variants. Record the card name, expansion, collector number, language, and any variant details before comparing prices.

- Find the card name and collector number on the card.
- Note the language and any distinguishing treatment, such as alternate artwork or foil.
- Use the official Pokémon card database to search by name, expansion, or rarity. Pokémon notes that a card’s rarity symbol appears in the lower-right corner and its set icon identifies the expansion.
The database helps identify a card and its printed category; it is not a secondary-market price guide.
Condition changes what comparable copies are worth
Condition can distinguish the value of two copies of the same card. PSA describes condition as a core component of trading-card value and points to centering issues, dinged corners, and creases as examples of flaws. Inspect both sides under good light and note edge wear and surface marks as well.

- Compare an ungraded card with other ungraded copies in similar visible condition.
- Compare a graded card with cards from the same grading company and with the same numeric grade.
- Do not describe an ungraded card as “PSA 10.” Looking at a card is not the same as receiving a professional grade.
PSA says its service authenticates cards, assigns a condition grade on a 1–10 scale, and encapsulates them in a tamper-evident case. A grade is an assessment, not a promise of a particular sale price.
Use completed sales to estimate current market value
Search for recent completed sales of the exact card and printing, then match the copy’s condition or grade as closely as possible. PSA’s guide to researching trading-card values recommends looking at final sale prices and bid counts; auction activity can provide context about buyer interest.

- Prefer several recent comparable sales when available, and note their dates.
- Keep raw and graded cards separate. For graded cards, match the grading company and numeric grade.
- Treat a live listing price as an asking price, not evidence that a buyer paid that amount.
- Do not treat one exceptional auction or record sale as a typical price.
Pokémon does not publish secondary-market prices. Its Support page, “What are my cards worth?”, says: “The secondary market value of an item is determined by the wants and needs of the Pokémon community, not by our company.” Any estimate is therefore specific to the card, condition, market, and date of the sales you compare.
Decide whether grading makes sense for a particular card
Grading may help authenticate and describe a card’s condition, but it does not guarantee that grading will increase the amount you receive. Before submitting a card, compare the likely outcomes with recent sales for the same card at different grades, then account for current grading and shipping costs. PSA notes that its pricing and estimated turnaround times can change, and turnaround estimates are not guaranteed; check its grading service information for current terms.

Rarity is not the only source of collector interest
A card can attract buyers because of its artwork, Pokémon or character, set, variant, or wider collector demand. A rarity label may be one clue, but it cannot tell you how many people currently want that particular card or what they will pay. For players, tournament legality can also affect interest, but it is separate from collector value. Pokémon’s 2026 Standard rotation announcement says G-marked cards rotate out for that season while H, I, and J marks are legal; an older printing may remain usable if a current reprint is legal. Check current regional rules for a specific tournament, since legality changes by season.

Pokémon warns that counterfeit cards exist. If a card looks suspicious, compare it with official product images or ask a local shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate it. Pokémon also identifies a suspiciously low price as a warning sign for counterfeit merchandise; price alone, however, does not authenticate a card.

Opening packs is not a dependable way to obtain a particular valuable card. Pokémon says an individual booster pack does not guarantee a specific Pokémon or card type.
