A roguelite keeps recognizable run-based and randomized ideas but changes or drops some of those conventions. Persistent upgrades or unlocks are a common roguelite feature, but they are a clue rather than a universal rule. Because the labels are used inconsistently, the most accurate classification describes a game’s actual systems instead of treating either word as a strict pass/fail category.
Roguelike and roguelite in plain English
What “roguelike” traditionally means
Rogue, first released in 1980, combined fantasy role-playing, randomly generated dungeon maps, exploration and permadeath. A character’s death ended that attempt, rather than returning the same character to a checkpoint with the run’s equipment intact. The player had to begin again and make better decisions with the knowledge gained from the previous attempt.

Modern use of roguelike usually points toward games that preserve a large portion of that structure. Runs are commonly turn-based, movement often takes place on a grid, and every action has tactical consequences. Food, health, equipment, positioning and other limited resources can matter as much as direct combat. The appeal is not simply that the game is difficult; it is that the player must solve a changing, self-contained situation under permanent consequences.

What “roguelite” usually signals
A roguelite borrows the run-based and replayable design associated with roguelikes while remixing other parts. It might use real-time combat, platforming, a card system, a different camera perspective or an authored structure around its randomized sections. A failed run may still award currency, abilities, items or other unlocks that affect later attempts.

That description expresses a tendency, not a legal definition. Some games marketed as roguelites have little or no permanent progression, while some games called roguelikes include limited forms of persistence. The useful question is always: which conventions does this particular game retain, and which does it replace?
The distinction is about design lineage, not difficulty
“Roguelike” does not mean “hard game,” and “roguelite” does not mean “easy roguelike.” Either can be extremely demanding or relatively forgiving. The distinction concerns how the game structures a run, what happens when the character dies, how the world is generated, and how closely the movement and decision systems resemble Rogue.
A short action game with randomized rooms and permanent upgrades can be a roguelite even if its difficulty is moderate. Conversely, a punishing game with fixed levels is not automatically a roguelike. Difficulty, repetition and procedural generation are individual characteristics; none of them alone settles the label.
The comparison axes that actually matter

| Design axis | Traditional roguelike reference point | Common roguelite variation |
|---|---|---|
| Run structure and failure | A character’s death ends the run and returns the player to the beginning. | Death ends the current run, but selected rewards or unlocks can remain available on future attempts. |
| World generation | Randomly generated environments and item placement create a new tactical problem each run. | Procedural generation may remain, but can be combined with authored routes, set-piece content or another genre’s level structure. |
| Action model | Turn-based actions and grid-based movement are high-value traditional factors. | Real-time movement, aiming, platforming or another control model may replace those factors. |
| Resources and decisions | Resource management, exploration, tactical complexity and multiple possible solutions are central concerns. | These systems may be simplified, moved into a meta-progression layer or recombined with action, card, strategy or role-playing mechanics. |
| Between-run progress | The classic character and run reset when the character dies. | Persistent currency, upgrades, objects or unlocks commonly change what is available in later runs. |
Steam’s overview of the subgenre notes that “roguelike” is still used as an umbrella term and that stricter definitions remain debated. The table therefore helps you explain a game’s design without pretending that a community label has a universally enforced boundary.
Why the Berlin Interpretation still matters
At the 2008 International Roguelike Development Conference in Berlin, developers and fans produced the Berlin Interpretation as a shared discussion framework. It identifies high-value factors including random environment generation, permadeath, turn-based play, grid-based play, non-modal actions, complexity, resource management, hack-and-slash combat, and exploration and discovery.
It also lists lower-value factors such as a single player character, monsters that follow player-like rules, tactical challenge, an ASCII display, dungeons and visible statistics. These are useful clues about the genre’s history, but they are not requirements that a modern game must satisfy.
“The purpose of this definition is for the roguelike community to better understand what the community is studying. It is not to place constraints on developers or games.”

That statement is essential context. The Berlin Interpretation is not an official certification system or a rulebook enforced by a platform. It gives writers and players vocabulary for discussing degrees of similarity to Rogue. A game can be influenced by roguelikes while intentionally rejecting several of the framework’s factors.
How to tell what a particular game is
When a store page, review or friend uses one of these labels, inspect the mechanics in this order:
- Identify the unit of play. Does the game divide play into discrete runs or attempts? If there is no meaningful run structure, neither label may be especially informative.
- Check what death resets. Determine whether death removes only the current attempt or also the character’s equipment, abilities and resources. A restart screen by itself does not tell you how much progress is lost.
- Look for procedural variation. Are rooms, maps, encounters, enemy placements, item locations or routes generated or selected differently each run? A game can randomize only some layers while keeping other sections authored.
- Examine the action model. Turn-based, grid-based play is a strong traditional roguelike signal. Real-time combat or free movement does not disqualify a game from being roguelite; it indicates that the design is remixing the older model.
- Measure decision density. Ask whether health, equipment, ammunition, food, money, positioning and other resources force trade-offs. Tactical complexity and exploration are more informative than a simple difficulty rating.
- Separate permanent unlocks from knowledge. Player knowledge always persists between attempts. The relevant question is whether the game itself preserves currency, upgrades, objects, characters, routes or other mechanical advantages.
- Describe the result rather than arguing over the noun. A precise explanation such as “randomized runs with real-time combat and permanent unlocks” tells a reader more than a bare genre tag.
Persistence is a clue, not a universal test
Between-run progression is one of the clearest modern signals of a roguelite. It can take several forms:
Recommended Free Tools
- Currency earned during a run can buy permanent improvements.
- New weapons, characters, cards, rooms or routes can be unlocked for future attempts.
- Objects found in one attempt can remain in a long-term collection.
- A story, challenge list or progression tree can advance even after the character dies.
However, persistence does not create a complete taxonomy. A game may retain only cosmetic or narrative progress, offer optional meta-progression, or reset most systems while preserving a small pool of unlocks. Conversely, a game can be called a roguelike because of its procedural, turn-based and permadeath structure even if it includes a limited persistent feature. State exactly what survives instead of treating “has upgrades” as the deciding test.

Where the modern category came from
Rogue’s 1980 design became a reference point for later games that emphasized procedural worlds, exploration, resource scarcity and permanent death. As developers combined those ideas with action combat, platforming, card play and other genres, players needed language that acknowledged the influence without claiming that every new title followed Rogue’s turn-based, grid-based structure.
The term roguelite grew in that space. It communicates recognizable ancestry while allowing substantial experimentation. Academic discussions of the category use a wide range of examples, including Into the Breach, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Spelunky, The Binding of Isaac and Darkest Dungeon. Their inclusion in discussions of roguelites illustrates how broad the modern umbrella has become; it does not mean that every one of them shares the same controls, progression or procedural systems.

Many arguments about labels happen because people focus on one visible feature. Procedural rooms alone do not make a roguelike. Permadeath alone does not make a roguelike. Permanent upgrades alone do not make a roguelite. The classification becomes clearer when several axes are stated together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a borderline example, use wording such as: “It uses a roguelike-style run structure and procedural variation, while its real-time combat and between-run unlocks make it a roguelite by common modern usage.” That sentence identifies the inherited elements and the deliberate departures without claiming that the community has issued a binding verdict.

Also distinguish a true run reset from ordinary replay. A conventional campaign may ask you to reload a save or restart a level, but that is not the same as a system designed around self-contained attempts, randomized conditions and permanent consequences. Conversely, a game may offer endless replayability through random encounters without making death the central organizing principle.
What the label tells a player before starting
Expectations associated with roguelikes
- Read every situation as a tactical puzzle because actions may consume turns and expose the character to immediate consequences.
- Expect experimentation, discovery and resource budgeting to matter more than memorizing a fixed sequence of levels.
- Assume that a death can erase the current character’s run unless the game explicitly says otherwise.
Expectations associated with roguelites
- Expect a run-based loop combined with another genre’s controls or combat model.
- Check how much progress survives failure and whether permanent upgrades change the difficulty curve.
- Expect the first attempts to teach systems and the long-term progression layer to expand the available options.
These are expectations, not guarantees. Before buying or downloading a game, read the specific description of its death rules, procedural systems and progression rather than relying on the label alone.
The most useful definition to remember
A roguelike is a game that more closely resembles Rogue’s traditional structure, especially in procedural generation, permadeath, turn-based grid play, resource management and tactical complexity. A roguelite preserves recognizable parts of that formula while changing others, often through real-time action, a different genre framework or persistent progression. Since the terms overlap and evolve, the honest answer is a mechanic-by-mechanic explanation of what resets, what changes and what the player must decide during each run.
