A Soulslike is not simply an action RPG with a high difficulty level. Its defining feel comes from a linked loop: study an enemy, commit to an attack or evasion, learn from the consequences, and use exploration or character choices to prepare for another attempt. The precise mechanics vary by game, but risk, readable feedback, and learning through retries are more useful clues than any one feature such as stamina or a corpse run.
What makes a Soulslike different?
In many action RPGs, combat, exploration, equipment, and bosses coexist without depending heavily on one another. In a Soulslike, those systems tend to reinforce the same demand: pay attention, make deliberate choices, and adapt when a plan fails. Enemy movement signals danger and openings; an attack or dodge commits the player to a moment of risk; and a death can cost progress or resources while revealing something useful for the next try.

Exploration can change the terms of a challenge. A hidden item, alternate route, new piece of equipment, or opportunity to strengthen a character may give the player another way forward. Checkpoints shape the rhythm between attempts. The result is a game where progress often comes from understanding and preparation as much as from reflexes.
This is a family resemblance, not a universal ruleset. “Soulslike” is useful shorthand, but it does not require every game to have stamina management, a corpse run, bonfires, an interconnected map, or the same kind of character build.

How combat turns attention into progress
Enemies are patterns to read
Soulslike combat commonly rewards watching what an enemy does before deciding how to respond. An attack may leave an opening, but exploiting it requires judging the timing and avoiding the temptation to overextend. Bandai Namco’s description of the Elden Ring approach highlights responding to enemy movement, learning patterns, and taking openings; an earlier account from director Hidetaka Miyazaki describes Dark Souls as rewarding strategy rather than simply faster reactions. Bandai Namco Europe and PlayStation Blog’s 2011 interview discuss those design aims.
Commitment makes timing matter
Actions have consequences because attacks and evasions take time and can leave the player exposed. A useful response is not always to attack as quickly as possible; it may be to wait, reposition, or spend a moment learning a move. Different games build this tension with different movement and combat systems, so there is no single Soulslike timing rule.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
Why are Soulslike games so hard?
Difficulty is part of the appeal, but “hard” by itself does not explain the experience. These games often ask players to recognize readable threats, accept that a mistimed action can be punished, and carry information from a failed attempt into the next one. The intended loop is try, die, learn, and eventually overcome—not simply repeat a challenge without gaining understanding.

Miyazaki has described the intended standard for a death as one the player can understand: “When players are killed, and they can understand why they were killed in an instance, and it feels justified – ‘Okay, yeah, that makes sense’ – that’s the game design we’re trying to achieve.” That is a statement of design intent, not a guarantee that every death will feel fair or clear to every player. Game Informer’s June 2024 interview covers his approach.

What death and retries look like
Failure is part of the learning loop, but its exact cost is not a genre-wide constant. Some games make recovery points and the possible loss or retrieval of resources part of the risk calculation. The player may have to decide whether to press farther or secure progress first. Other games handle death differently, so the phrase “retrieve your souls” does not apply to every Soulslike.
Miyazaki summarized the Dark Souls approach this way: “The main concept has not changed: You try something, die, learn from your mistakes, and eventually overcome those mistakes.” For Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the death penalty differs from the recoverable corpse-run pattern associated with earlier games. PlayStation Blog’s interview discusses the retry philosophy; Xbox Wire’s interview with producer Robert Conkey describes Sekiro’s differences.

Why exploration matters mechanically
In Soulslikes, exploration can provide more than scenery or optional collectibles. Branching paths, shortcuts, hidden areas, and items can reveal the world or change how the player approaches a difficult encounter. Earlier Dark Souls games are associated with interconnected routes, while Elden Ring opens the formula into a broad world where players can explore elsewhere or choose another route when they hit a wall. Openness is one evolution of the design, not a requirement for the genre. PlayStation Blog’s 2022 interview and Bandai Namco Europe’s discussion of Elden Ring address those approaches.

In games such as Dark Souls and Elden Ring, weapons and equipment can handle differently, and character choices can shape a build. That flexibility can change the answer to a difficult encounter: a player might alter equipment, seek an upgrade, summon help, or explore before trying again. These options broaden the ways to prepare, but they do not remove the need to respond to combat.
How much freedom a game offers varies. Sekiro is a useful boundary case: its producer described it as “Action-adventure with RPG elements.” It gives the player a defined protagonist, with stealth, traversal, prosthetic tools, and abilities playing a larger role than the stat-focused character building associated with earlier Souls games. Its design shows why a recognizable lineage does not mean identical RPG systems. Xbox Wire’s 2019 interview discusses the description and mechanics.
Three games that show the range
| Game | What it illustrates |
|---|---|
| Dark Souls | Deliberate combat, varied weapon handling, recovery points, and the try–fail–learn loop. Miyazaki described room for players to strategize and consider another approach after a death. PlayStation Blog |
| Elden Ring | An open-world adaptation: players can explore elsewhere, pursue upgrades or equipment, use summons, and choose among routes while still learning enemy patterns. PlayStation Blog and Bandai Namco Europe |
| Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | A related but distinct action-adventure design, with less emphasis on stats, more emphasis on tools and authored abilities, and a death penalty unlike the Souls corpse run. Xbox Wire |
Is Elden Ring a Soulslike?
Yes. Elden Ring is a Soulslike that adapts familiar combat and learning principles to open-world exploration. Its scale gives players more options when stuck—including exploring elsewhere, seeking upgrades, using summons, or taking another route—rather than making an interconnected, tightly bounded map a condition of belonging to the family.
