South Korean men who do not qualify for an exemption may be assigned to one of several forms of supplementary service, or—if they meet the separate legal basis—apply for conscience-based alternative service. Neither is a general, freely chosen substitute for enlistment: the applicable route depends on formal classification, qualifications, and assignment by the authorities.
“Supplementary service” and “alternative service” are different
The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) groups social-service work, arts and sports assignments, designated public-interest professional roles, expert research personnel, and industrial technical personnel under supplementary service. Its overview explains that some people found capable of active duty are not selected for active-duty enlistment because of armed-forces supply and demand. Conscience-based alternative service is a separate statutory category. The MMA describes it as service assigned under the Act on Assignment to and Performance of Alternative Service, on grounds of freedom of conscience, instead of active, supplementary, or reserve service. What supplementary-service routes exist?
The MMA lists these categories and describes their broad purposes. Being qualified for a profession or having a relevant skill does not by itself establish eligibility or guarantee a particular post; placement and current rules matter.

Category descriptions are from the MMA. The Korea Ministry of Government Legislation’s Easy Law guidance gives durations for the research and industrial routes; those figures are set out below.
How long are the research and industrial routes?
The Easy Law page state reviewed for this article lists these durations. They apply only to the specified categories and classifications—not to supplementary service as a whole. The page also carries notice of an underlying statutory change taking effect on December 10, 2026, so check the current rule with the authorities, particularly for service beginning after that date.

Application, assignment, and training depend on the route
These pathways do not share one universal application or call-up process. For example, the current Enforcement Decree describes different timing for military education call-ups: social-service personnel are called up with service or, in specified circumstances, within one year; arts and sports personnel within one year after assignment; several public-health, legal, and veterinary professional roles before placement; and research or industrial personnel during required service, subject to exceptions.
