The 2024 Basic Rules treat these labels as broad descriptions of typical attitudes—not scripts that dictate every choice.
How the nine alignments work
Think of alignment as a grid, not a ranking from best to worst. One axis describes what a character tends to value morally; the other describes how much they rely on laws, traditions, personal codes, or freedom from expectations. The 2024 D&D Basic Rules describe typical behavior and acknowledge that individuals can vary.
| Order outlook | Good | Neutral | Evil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lawful | Lawful Good (LG) | Lawful Neutral (LN) | Lawful Evil (LE) |
| Neutral | Neutral Good (NG) | Neutral (N) | Neutral Evil (NE) |
| Chaotic | Chaotic Good (CG) | Chaotic Neutral (CN) | Chaotic Evil (CE) |
Good generally points toward helping others or doing what is right. Evil points toward self-interest or harm to others. Moral neutrality avoids a firm commitment to either, or takes a pragmatic approach. Lawful suggests a pull toward law, tradition, or a personal code; chaotic favors conscience, whim, or personal freedom over external expectations. Neutrality on the order axis means neither side is a defining commitment.
What each alignment means
Lawful Good (LG)
Tries to do what is right in a principled, orderly way. The Basic Rules describe a person who fights injustice and protects the innocent.

Follows conscience with little regard for other people’s expectations. The rules’ example is a rebel who robs a cruel tax collector to help the poor.
Lawful Neutral (LN)
Acts according to law, tradition, or a personal code, without letting compassion or temptation to evil sway that discipline.

Follows personal whims and values freedom above all else. “Chaotic” describes a preference for personal choice over external order; it does not by itself mean cruel or malicious.
Lawful Evil (LE)
Pursues what it wants methodically, using a code, tradition, loyalty, or established order. The Basic Rules offer an aristocrat who exploits citizens while scheming for power as an example.

How to tell similar alignments apart
Hold one axis steady and compare the other. Lawful Good and Lawful Evil both value order, but differ in moral aim. Lawful Good and Chaotic Good both aim to help or do what is right, but differ in how much they defer to rules and expectations.

This is why lawful does not mean good, and chaotic does not mean evil. A chaotic good character might break an unjust law to help someone; a lawful evil character might follow a code while exploiting people. Likewise, “neutral” on one axis does not erase the other: a neutral good character can be strongly committed to helping others, even if neither law nor rebellion defines them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use alignment as a roleplaying guide, not a rulebook for every choice
To find a useful starting point, ask two questions: What does this character tend to do when someone is in need? and How much do laws, traditions, or personal codes govern how they act? Look at recurring choices and consequential patterns rather than assigning a lasting label based on one isolated action. That is a roleplaying approach, not a separate mechanical test.
A character can have mixed motives, change over time, or act against a typical tendency. Give them specific goals, relationships, and exceptions; alignment is a shorthand for ethical outlook, not a complete personality or biography. D&D Beyond’s editorial guidance on character creation also presents alignment as a roleplaying tool, while the Basic Rules provide the rules text.

What the 2024 rules say about player characters
Choosing alignment is part of character creation in the 2024 Basic Rules. Their default assumption is that player characters are not evil-aligned, and they advise checking with the Dungeon Master before making an evil character. This is guidance for the game’s default assumptions, not a universal ban: the DM and campaign can set expectations for the table.
Unaligned creatures and older D&D cosmology
Not every creature has an alignment. The 2024 rules say that most creatures without rational thought do not; sharks, for example, are described as unaligned rather than evil. Being dangerous or predatory does not by itself make a creature evil.
Older campaign material may use alignment more cosmologically. The 2014 Basic Rules say that alignment is a moral choice for many thinking creatures, while it is essential to the nature of celestials and fiends and connects them to Outer Planes that embody alignments. Treat that as the 2014 rules’ framing rather than silently applying it to the 2024 character-creation overview.
Are the nine alignments measured categories?
No prevalence or population statistics are supplied for the nine categories in the cited official rules. They are a roleplaying taxonomy, not empirically measured personality types.
