Steam’s launch snapshot shows a divided PC audience: some players are encountering technical problems, while others simply dislike the game’s faster, precision-focused interpretation of Castlevania. The sensible choice depends on whether you are buying on PC, how much launch troubleshooting you will tolerate, and whether you want twitch combat rather than slower, more positional exploration.
What Steam’s “Mixed” label actually tells you
Valve’s Steam listing recorded 59% positive from 670 reviews in 2026. That is a close split in a small, early sample, so “Mixed” describes the balance of opinions at that moment. It does not mean that every player found the game broken, nor that the game has settled into a permanent score. Review sentiment can change quickly as more people play and as the developer addresses launch problems.

The timing matters. Belmont’s Curse launched on 15 October 2026, and the captured score was taken during the first days of release. Early PC reviews often combine opinions about the game itself with reactions to a particular computer, monitor, controller, operating system or graphics configuration. A later score may look different without either the game or the original reviews being “wrong.”

Two separate issues are pulling the score in opposite directions
The negative reviews do not have one single explanation. Reports point to both PC launch friction and a genuine disagreement about the game’s design direction. Those categories overlap for some players, but they should be judged separately before you decide whether to buy.

PC launch friction can make a good session feel unplayable
In a PC Gamer review, the game initially opened to a black screen on a monitor running above 120 Hz. The reviewer also observed frame-rate drops during cutscenes. Those are high-impact problems: a title that will not display correctly or that stutters during story scenes can receive a negative review before its combat and exploration have a fair chance.
The same review identifies several control issues that are less catastrophic but still affect every minute of play. Whip and grapple timing can miss the point the player intended to reach. The dodge appears to offer little obvious invulnerability, so a move that looks like an escape may not reliably avoid damage. Phasing controls can feel fiddly, and healing inputs are easy to misread. PC Gamer still praised the game’s hitstop, animation, tarot presentation and the way later castle areas open up, but those positives do not erase the frustration of imprecise inputs.
Steam Community discussions add reports of black screens, crashes, stutters, ghost inputs and inconsistent performance on Steam Deck. These are player reports, not controlled tests, and they are configuration-dependent. Treat them as signals to check your own hardware and settings rather than proof that every PC or Deck behaves the same way.

Belmont’s Curse is built around fast, technical combat and demanding platforming. That can be exciting if you enjoy learning attack patterns, threading a grapple through a small target and making precise movement decisions under pressure. It can feel wrong if your ideal Castlevania is slower, more positional and RPG-like, with time to study a room before committing to an attack.

The Guardian’s Harper Jay MacIntyre summarized that divide this way: “The series’ new emphasis on twitch-based action may annoy purists but you can’t call it dull.” The sentence is useful because it identifies a disagreement about priorities, not a simple quality failure. The game’s combat is the strongest part of that review, while leveling is described as “perfunctory.” Players expecting a deep character-building system may therefore be disappointed even if they enjoy the fights.
Other criticisms are similarly subjective but concrete. GamesRadar lists difficult boss discovery, limited fast travel and an underwhelming soundtrack among the drawbacks. PC Gamer’s complaints about slack or confusing controls can be deal-breakers for one player and manageable learning friction for another. A low review from someone who dislikes the twitch emphasis is not evidence of a crash, just as a crash report is not evidence that the combat design is bad.
Why critics can like it more than Steam users
Professional reviews were not all written from the same version or platform as the Steam audience. TechRadar reviewed the PS5 version and praised the balance between platforming and combat, exploration, secrets and challenge. It also warns that a death can reset substantial progress and that late bosses are very difficult. GamesRadar reviewed a PS5 code, praising the gothic world, cryptic clues, map-based exploration and story while noting navigation problems and a weak soundtrack.
That platform context offers a plausible explanation for the different tone. Console reviewers may have been working with a more stable build, while Steam users were rating the PC launch as they encountered it. The available coverage does not prove a deliberate platform disparity, and it does not establish that every console copy is trouble-free. It does show that a PS5 review and a first-day PC review are not measuring exactly the same experience.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Review format also changes the emphasis. A critic can spend several days learning the timing, document a workaround and evaluate the full arc into the later castle. A player who gets a black screen, loses input during a boss attempt or sees repeated cutscene stutter may reasonably stop playing and post a negative review. Both responses are valid evidence, but they answer different questions.
What game are you actually buying?
Konami describes the game as an exploration-based 2D action title developed jointly by Konami, Evil Empire and Motion Twin, and published by Konami. Rose Belmont travels through burning Paris and Dracula’s castle in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Progress combines weapons, abilities, secrets, upgrades and puzzle-like traversal rather than a purely linear sequence of stages.
Review coverage includes PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 listings. Availability, performance and control options can differ by platform and edition, so do not use a console review as a guarantee for the PC build.

Konami also announced digital and physical Midnight Editions. Those editions include alternate costumes, a Digital Sound & Art Gallery and an in-game relic. The bonuses do not change the combat model or resolve a technical issue; choose an edition for its extras, not as a solution to a negative Steam review.

Buy now or wait for patches?
There is no universal answer, but the following comparison separates the decision into the factors that most affect satisfaction.
| Decision factor | Buy now is more reasonable when… | Waiting is safer when… |
|---|---|---|
| Technical stability | You can tolerate launch troubleshooting and your display is not affected by the reported high-refresh black-screen problem. | A black screen, crashes, stutter or unreliable input would make you stop playing immediately. |
| Combat and movement | You actively want twitch timing, demanding platforming and technical fights. | You need generous dodge windows, highly predictable grapples and immediately readable controls. |
| Castlevania style | You are open to a faster reinterpretation of the series. | You mainly want classic, slower positional play or a substantial RPG progression system. |
| Exploration and challenge | You enjoy cryptic clues, backtracking, traps and difficult bosses. | You want abundant fast travel, forgiving deaths and a smooth route through the map. |
| Presentation | Gothic art, animation and tarot-inspired presentation matter more to you than soundtrack strength. | You expect a consistently memorable score or heavily animated cutscenes. |
Who is a sensible day-one buyer?
- Players who value combat depth and are comfortable practicing precise movement.
- Castlevania fans willing to treat this as an action-focused variation rather than a restoration of the older pacing.
- PC owners who can test settings, document faults and accept that the launch build may not represent the long-term experience.
- Console players whose priority is exploration, secrets and gothic atmosphere, with the understanding that late bosses and progress resets can be severe.
Who should wait?
- Anyone for whom a black screen or repeated crash would make the purchase unusable.
- Players buying specifically for deep leveling; the Guardian characterizes that part as perfunctory.
- People who dislike demanding platforming, difficult boss discovery or limited fast travel.
- Steam Deck owners who need consistent performance and cannot accept configuration-dependent results.
Waiting is not an admission that the game is poor. It is a way to let later player reports show whether PC stability and input behavior improve, and to see whether the score remains divided after the launch sample grows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate the PC version before giving up
The documented issues are not guaranteed to have one fix, but you can isolate whether your problem matches the launch reports before requesting a refund or leaving a review.
- Check the monitor refresh rate. If your display is set above 120 Hz and the game opens to a black screen, temporarily switch Windows or your graphics-control panel to 120 Hz or lower and try launching again. This is a diagnostic step based on the reported condition, not a confirmed permanent fix.
- Test more than the opening room. If the game starts, watch a cutscene and note whether frame pacing drops only there or throughout play. Separating cutscene behavior from combat performance helps describe the fault accurately.
- Check every input method you intend to use. Try the controller or keyboard you will use for grapples, dodges, phasing and healing. If an input is misread, record which action, device and setting produced it; the reports do not establish that every device has the same behavior.
- Use the same test on Steam Deck. Deck performance has been described as inconsistent in community discussions. Compare a repeatable area, note stutter or ghost inputs, and avoid treating one successful launch as proof that later areas will behave identically.
- Separate a technical fault from a design complaint. A crash or black screen is a stability issue. Missing a grapple point, taking damage during a dodge or finding healing unclear may be an intentional timing and feedback problem. Your buying decision should weigh those categories differently.
Keep your notes when posting a review. Mention platform, display refresh rate, input device and the symptom you reproduced. That makes the Steam score more useful to the next buyer than a one-word reaction.

What the strongest reviews agree on
Despite their different scores, the reviews converge on a recognizable identity. Combat is the center of the experience, and the game is not dull. Its gothic setting, animation, secrets and map-led exploration are recurring strengths. The challenge is deliberate: late bosses can be extremely difficult, deaths may discard meaningful progress, and movement often demands accurate timing.
The disagreements concern the cost of that ambition. Controls that feel expressive after practice can feel slack on a first attempt. Cryptic clues can make exploration rewarding or obscure. Limited fast travel can preserve discovery or turn backtracking into a chore. A lighter leveling layer may keep attention on action or leave RPG-minded players unsatisfied. Soundtrack quality and cutscene presentation likewise affect how complete the package feels, even when the core fights work.
How to read the 59% score responsibly
Use the number as a prompt to investigate, not as a substitute for your own priorities. First ask whether you are looking at the PC launch or a console version. Then identify which complaints recur in the kind of experience you want: stability failures, input clarity, twitch combat, exploration friction or presentation. Finally, remember that 670 reviews captured only an early moment after the 15 October 2026 release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the technical reports are your main concern, waiting for more PC-specific evidence is rational. If the design complaints are the issue, no patch may turn the game into a slow, RPG-heavy Castlevania; that is a matter of direction rather than repair. Conversely, if you want fast combat and gothic exploration and can accept demanding controls, “Mixed” may describe a game aligned with your taste even while it warns you about launch rough edges.
