Quick wins for a faster PC:

It is Nexus Mods’ own manager and is built around the Nexus workflow. Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) is the stronger choice for users who want a profile-based setup in which installed files are kept out of the game’s data directory, so mods do not overwrite one another there. Neither is a universal winner. The right pick depends on the game you play, your operating system, and how you prefer to manage files.
Vortex: the default for Nexus-first setups
Nexus Mods describes Vortex as its current mod manager, designed to work directly with the Nexus Mods site (Nexus Mods Vortex overview). Three things make it the simplest starting point:
- Direct Nexus integration. Mods are installed and managed from within the manager rather than through manual file copying.
- Independent mod profiles. You can keep separate setups for different playthroughs or testing, so one mod list does not have to serve every purpose.
- Collections. Nexus’s Vortex page promotes one-click installation of both individual mods and Nexus Collections.
Mod Organizer 2: profiles and virtualized installs
MO2 is an independent open-source manager with its own project website. Its defining feature is virtualization: mod files are kept separate from the game’s data directory, so installed mods do not overwrite files there, and profiles let you switch between different mod sets. Users who like to keep tight control over every file, or who have built large, carefully ordered setups, often prefer this model.
MO2 also integrates with Nexus Mods for downloading, installing and updating mods. Nexus’s own Mod Organizer 2 listing documents that integration. Its installation model is more hands-on than Vortex’s, which is the trade-off for the extra control.

Side-by-side comparison
| Decision axis | Vortex | Mod Organizer 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Nexus workflow | Designed to work directly with Nexus Mods (overview; Vortex page). | Nexus integration for downloading, installing and updating mods (Nexus listing). |
| Profiles and file handling | Independent mod profiles for different setups or playthroughs (overview). | Profiles plus a virtualized install, so mod files do not overwrite the game’s data directory (project website). |
| Nexus Collections | One-click installation of Collections is promoted on the official Vortex page (Vortex page). | Not stated in MO2’s official materials. Do not assume the same Collections workflow. |
| Game support | Nexus’s overview says over 30 games; the Vortex GitHub README says over 250 games and counting (README). The two figures conflict and neither is dated. | Covers 64-bit titles such as Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4, plus games supported by the older MO1. A total count is not stated. |
| Operating system | No confirmed timeline for official Linux support, per Nexus’s FAQ (Nexus FAQ). | The project website offers information and downloads; it does not state a current platform-support matrix. |
Game support: check the title, not the headline count
Support counts should not decide the question. Nexus’s Vortex overview cites over 30 supported games, while the Vortex GitHub README cites over 250 games and counting. These figures are not reconciled on the pages themselves, and they may use different definitions of “supported.” The only reliable check is whether your specific game is listed and has current setup guidance in the manager you intend to use. Older titles can behave differently from recent releases in either tool, so confirm the game before you commit to a large mod list.
Linux, SteamOS and the Nexus Mods App
Platform is the factor most likely to change the answer. Nexus’s FAQ on discontinuing the Nexus Mods App states that the app is no longer in development and that Nexus’s effort is focused on Vortex. The same FAQ says there is no confirmed timeline for official Linux support for Vortex. If you play on Linux or SteamOS, do not assume a supported path. Check the current official status and the game-specific instructions before choosing either manager. Statements of this kind change over time, so read the FAQ directly rather than relying on older guides.

Which manager fits your situation
- New to Nexus Mods on a supported Windows game: start with Vortex, particularly if you want Nexus integration and Collections.
- Experienced user who wants profiles and virtualized installs: choose MO2, provided your target game is supported and the workflow suits your setup.
- Installing or maintaining a Nexus Collection: Vortex is the option the official Vortex page directly supports. Do not assume MO2 offers the same Collections workflow.
- Linux or SteamOS: verify current platform support for the manager and the game before installing anything.
Before you commit
- Confirm that your game appears in the manager’s current supported list, and check its current game-specific setup guide.
- Install a small test set of mods first to confirm that installation, updates and launching work on your system.
- If you are moving an existing large mod setup from one manager to the other, back up the game’s mod folders and your load order before making changes.
Vortex is the simpler, more integrated choice, and it is where Nexus is directing its development. MO2 is the better tool if you value its profile model and virtualized file handling enough to accept a more manual workflow.
