For your first playthrough, play the Halo campaigns in original release order: Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, then Halo Infinite. That sequence preserves the way the games originally introduced their story. Halo Support specifically recommends starting with the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign for release order. Recommended order for a first playthrough
- Halo: Combat Evolved — play the Anniversary campaign in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC).
- Halo 2 — play Halo 2: Anniversary in MCC.
- Halo 3.
- Halo 3: ODST.
- Halo: Reach.
- Halo 4.
- Halo 5: Guardians.
- Halo Infinite.
Halo Support lists the six MCC campaigns through Halo 4 in this release sequence and recommends the first game’s Anniversary campaign for newcomers. Why some orders put Halo: Reach first
Halo: Reach is a prequel whose events take place just before the first game. That makes it the natural starting point if you prioritize in-universe chronology. But chronology and release order are different: Halo Waypoint describes MCC’s saga journey as beginning with Reach, while Halo Support’s explicit release-order recommendation starts with Combat Evolved Anniversary. For a newcomer, release order is the clearer default: it avoids beginning with a prequel and then jumping back to the series’ original starting point. The position of ODST after Halo 3 follows its original release placement and keeps the sequence simple.

Chronological order, if you prefer the in-fiction sequence
A practical broad campaign chronology is:
- Halo: Reach
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo 3
- Halo 4
- Halo 5: Guardians
- Halo Infinite
This is a broad game-level order, not a mission-by-mission timeline. In particular, this sequence places ODST after all of Halo 2; it does not specify a mid-game insertion point. Choose it if you already know the series and want to prioritize setting chronology over the original reveal and release sequence.
Which games are in The Master Chief Collection?
MCC is the convenient route through the first six entries in the recommended order: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Reach, and Halo 4. Where Halo: Campaign Evolved fits
Xbox Wire announced Halo: Campaign Evolved as a remake of the original Combat Evolved campaign, with three new Operation: METEORITE missions. It belongs at the first game’s point in either play order; it is an alternate version, not an additional numbered campaign between the existing games. The announcement listed Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5, and named July 28, 2026 as its global launch date (July 29 in Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets). Because an announcement is not a live storefront check, confirm current availability and access terms with the official store before choosing it. [Xbox Wire]

The television adaptation uses the “Silver timeline,” which Xbox Wire distinguishes from the games’ core canon. Use the campaign sequence above for the games; the show does not change their play order. [Xbox Wire]
