Aternos can run Minecraft Java Edition mods, but only within a defined set of rules. Your server needs a supported mod loader, and each mod must be available in Aternos’s online add-ons library for the Minecraft and loader versions you choose. Aternos does not accept arbitrary custom mod or modpack uploads. Anything outside its catalog has to go through its paid hosting service, exaroton.
The two checks that decide whether a mod runs
Treat “which mods?” as two separate questions. First, confirm the mod loader the mod is built for. Second, confirm that the exact mod and version appear in the Aternos add-ons search for that loader and Minecraft version. Passing the first check does not guarantee the second.
- Open the mod’s project page on CurseForge or Modrinth and note the loader, Minecraft version, and any required dependencies.
- Choose the same loader on your Aternos server.
- Search the add-ons library for the mod and select the version that matches your Minecraft version.
- Install each listed dependency as well. Aternos often lists dependencies in its add-ons list, but the project description on Modrinth or CurseForge is the reliable reference.
Supported mod loaders
Aternos’s help documentation names four loaders for mods: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. Forge is the loader with the largest selection of add-ons, according to Aternos. The table below reflects only what Aternos states; where it does not give a detail, the cell says so.
| Loader | Named in Aternos help | Selection compared with Forge | Example from Aternos guides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forge | Yes | Largest selection, per Aternos | Not stated |
| Fabric | Yes | Named as an alternative; size not stated | Origins guide: install Fabric, Fabric API, and Origins at compatible versions |
| NeoForge | Yes | Named as an alternative; size not stated | Not stated |
| Quilt | Yes | Named as an alternative; size not stated | Not stated |
The Origins example shows the pattern to follow rather than a current recommendation. The Aternos guide includes an older version example, so always match the version shown on the mod’s page to your server’s Minecraft version.

Individual mods versus modpacks
Aternos runs mods in two different ways, and they behave differently.
| Route | Where the content comes from | How you control it | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual mods | Aternos add-ons library, which draws from CurseForge and Modrinth | You pick each mod and version | Only mods present in the catalog for your loader and version |
| Modpacks | Supported packs listed from CurseForge, Modrinth, ATLauncher, and the FTB App | You install a whole pack from the server’s software section | One pack at a time; individual mods and configurations inside the pack cannot be added or changed |
A supported modpack is a bundled experience. Aternos updates packs automatically and recommends using the latest pack version when you report a problem. If you need a specific combination of mods, the individual-mod route works only when every project you want is in the Aternos catalog. If one is missing, you have to look at the uploads options below.

Playing on a modpack server
Every player who joins needs to install the same pack on their own computer through the matching official launcher, and the pack version must match the server’s. Installing the pack on the server alone is not enough.
Custom uploads are not supported
Aternos does not offer FTP or full file upload for custom mods and modpacks. Its help article on uploading files and FTP access states: “Aternos doesn’t provide FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access to your server files.” Aternos gives two reasons: keeping the service free, and reducing the risk of malicious code entering its servers.

If you need custom jars or a hand-built modpack, Aternos directs you to exaroton, its paid hosting service, which offers custom file uploads and more control over the server. Aternos does not describe the features of exaroton beyond this, so check that service directly before you move a server.
Dependencies and server-side requirements
Many mods depend on libraries. The Tinkers’ Construct example in Aternos’s documentation requires Mantle, so Mantle must be installed alongside it. Some dependencies must also be installed on the server, not only on players’ computers.
Not every client-side mod belongs on a server. Before you add a mod, read its project page to check whether it is intended to run on a server. A mod that only changes visuals or the user interface usually does not need to be on the server, while one that adds blocks, items, or world generation does.

The mod loader and version on the client must match the server. Players also need the same mods and mod versions, and the Minecraft version must match as well. Mismatches show up as errors, and Aternos specifically lists registry-data synchronization failures and missing mod entries as symptoms of this problem.

- Registry-data synchronization failure: the client and server disagree on the mod content or versions. Compare the mod list and versions on both sides.
- Missing mod entries: a mod is installed on one side but not the other, or a dependency is absent. Check the dependency list first.
- Connection problems after a pack update: the player may still be on the old pack version. Have them reinstall the current pack version through the official launcher.
When the mod you want is missing
Aternos has a suggestion system for mods and modpacks that are not yet in its library. Its help article sets these conditions for a suggestion to be accepted:
- The project is hosted on a supported site.
- It can be downloaded directly.
- It is free.
- It is reasonably popular and actively maintained.
- It has a detailed English description.
Aternos reviews suggestions by hand, and it says review can take days or weeks. It does not publish a download threshold for “popular.” Projects may also be rejected for technical reasons, such as a severe performance impact or a need for an additional open port, or if the author does not allow redistribution.
For modpacks, the pack must include server files. Aternos says packs on Modrinth and ATLauncher always include them, while CurseForge and TechnicPack listings have to be checked individually.
Scope of this guide
This applies to Minecraft Java Edition only. Aternos’s catalog changes over time, so a mod that is available today may be removed or updated, and a mod that is missing may be added later. Check the live add-ons library for the exact Minecraft and loader version you plan to use.
