Mojang’s official notes describe pink sheep as rare in Bedrock Edition and very rare in Java Edition. Those qualitative terms are the most reliable current answer. A precise percentage that circulates online is an older secondary figure, and it should not be treated as a current, version-independent rate.
What Mojang’s official notes say about pink sheep
Mojang’s Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 patch notes, titled “Spring to Life” and published March 25, 2025, state: “There is a rare chance for a pink Sheep to spawn,” listed separately for each biome class. The Java Edition snapshot 25w08a notes use stronger wording: “Pink Sheep will still be very rare and able to spawn anywhere where Sheep can spawn.” Both statements appear in release notes rather than attributed to a named developer.
Neither set of notes publishes a numeric probability for pink sheep. “Rare” and “very rare” are the official descriptions for these 2025 versions.
How biome changes the common colors
In Bedrock 1.21.70, sheep color depends on the biome class where the sheep spawns. Java snapshot 25w08a uses a similar biome split, but its notes cover only the cold and warm classes, so the temperate row is marked as not stated.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock 1.21.70 (March 2025 notes) | Temperate | White | Black, gray, light gray, brown | Rare chance |
| Bedrock 1.21.70 (March 2025 notes) | Cold | Black | White, gray, light gray, brown | Rare chance |
| Bedrock 1.21.70 (March 2025 notes) | Warm | Brown | Black, white, gray, light gray | Rare chance |
| Java 25w08a snapshot (2025 test version) | Temperate | Not stated in the cited notes | Not stated in the cited notes | Very rare, anywhere sheep spawn |
| Java 25w08a snapshot (2025 test version) | Cold | Black | Gray, light gray, white, brown | Very rare, anywhere sheep spawn |
| Java 25w08a snapshot (2025 test version) | Warm | Brown | Gray, light gray, white, black | Very rare, anywhere sheep spawn |
Pink is therefore the one color the official notes single out as rare in every biome class they cover, in both editions.
How rare is a pink sheep, numerically?
The number most often quoted, 0.164%, comes from a Minecraft Wiki search-result page. That page reports a full natural spawn distribution, shown below. The search-result view does not show a publication year, and the full page was not checked in context, so these figures should be read as older secondary values rather than confirmed current rates.

| Color (as reported by Minecraft Wiki search result) | Reported natural spawn share |
|---|---|
| White | 81.836% |
| Black | 5% |
| Gray | 5% |
| Light gray | 5% |
| Brown | 3% |
| Pink (total) | 0.164%, made up of adult pink sheep at 0.1558% and pink lambs at 0.0082% |
What a per-sheep percentage means
If the reported 0.164% applied to a given version, roughly 1 in 610 naturally spawning sheep would be pink (100 divided by 0.164 is about 610). That is a chance attached to each sheep spawn. It is not a guarantee that a particular world, chunk, or search area contains a pink sheep, and a world can easily contain none.
Natural spawns versus player-made pink sheep
- Natural spawn: the sheep appears in the world through the biome rules above. Only this case has a spawn chance.
- Dyed sheep: a player can dye a sheep pink. This is a player action, not a spawn roll, so it says nothing about how rare pink sheep are in the wild.
- Other mechanics: commands or other game mechanics can produce sheep that do not come from the natural spawn rules. The official notes cited here do not document these cases in detail, so this article does not quantify them.
Which version does this apply to?
The biome rules are tied to specific releases. The notes cited here are from 2025, and the current release of either edition may differ. Check the version you play before relying on any color table.

Bedrock Edition 1.21.70
The 1.21.70 notes are the official release-level description for the biome-based colors in the table above. They describe a release, not a snapshot, so they are the strongest basis for Bedrock behavior from that version onward unless later notes say otherwise.
Java Edition 25w07a and 25w08a
Java snapshot 25w07a introduced biome-based sheep colors and additional naturally spawning colors. The following snapshot, 25w08a, reverted those extra naturally spawning colors (blue, light blue, cyan, yellow, orange, and red). Its final listed direction is the one shown in the Java rows of the table. Snapshots are test builds, so 25w08a does not by itself prove how every later Java release handles sheep colors.

- If a newer note gives a numeric pink sheep rate, treat it as valid only for that version and the source that published it.
