For a first Calamity playthrough, start with Calamity alone and add quality-of-life mods only when you know what you want to improve. Calamity already adds a substantial progression, enemy, boss, and endgame experience, so extra content is optional. For a different goal, choose an add-on by the change you want: Infernum for a tougher, reworked boss challenge; Catalyst for more Calamity-themed content; or the Fargo’s Souls DLC if you plan to use Fargo’s Souls.

For a first playthrough, keep the setup simple
Calamity is a major content mod, not a small add-on that depends on other mods to fill out its campaign. Starting with it on its own makes it easier to learn its progression and identify whether you actually want a tougher challenge, more content, or less grind. Add quality-of-life changes selectively rather than installing a large bundle before you know how it affects your run.
Calamity’s official site directs players to install it through tModLoader on Steam. Its own description covers progression, enemies, bosses, and endgame content; that breadth is why a clean first run is a sensible default, not an official rule.
Choose Infernum only if you want a deliberate difficulty jump
Infernum is for players seeking substantially reworked boss encounters, not simply a convenience upgrade. It adds a difficulty intended to exceed Death Mode and emphasizes extensive boss AI reworks, alongside exclusive content. Treat it as a deliberate challenge choice: it changes the combat experience rather than merely smoothing ordinary progression.

Choose Catalyst for a Calamity-themed expansion
Catalyst adds content within Calamity’s theme, including a reimplementation of Astrageldon Slime as a superboss and themed weapons. Consider it if you have finished or are comfortable with Calamity’s main progression and want another themed encounter and related content.
Use the Fargo’s Souls DLC when you want the crossover
If Fargo’s Souls is already part of the plan, Calamity – Fargo’s Souls DLC is the relevant bridge. Its stated purpose is to address bugs, progression, balancing, and incompatibilities between Calamity and Fargo’s Souls. It also adds difficulty variants, boss reworks, and accessories. Fargo’s official wiki likewise describes the DLC as providing compatibility, content, and boss reworks.

This is a targeted crossover option, not a general Calamity requirement. If you do not intend to use Fargo’s Souls, it does not answer a need that the other choices address.
Pick a quality-of-life mod for a specific friction point
For reducing grind
Fargo’s Mutant Mod is described by the official Terraria mods directory as a quality-of-life mod that reduces grinding and gives more control. It is a better fit for a player who wants to reduce repeated farming than for someone looking for new boss fights or a higher difficulty.

For music without gameplay changes
Calamity’s official site links a separate vanilla music expansion and the soundtrack. These are optional audio choices, not gameplay add-ons; choose them if you want different music rather than altered progression or combat.

Do not assume that every mod associated with Calamity works with every current version of Calamity or tModLoader. The official community modifications page distinguishes add-ons from mods Calamity augments or supports, and marks some entries as historical because updates have made them unplayable. It notes that some historical entries may require tModLoader’s 1.3-legacy branch and a downgraded Calamity version.

Before adding a mod to an established world, check its current listing for version requirements and multiplayer notes. For a multiplayer run, every player should confirm the same required mods and versions before joining. The official Calamity site also links to the mod’s wiki and download route; use current listings rather than relying on an old compatibility list.

- Confirm the add-on supports your installed tModLoader and Calamity versions.
- Check whether it requires another mod, a particular branch, or a different Calamity version.
- Read multiplayer notes before using it in a shared world.
- Avoid enabling several content or difficulty changes at once if you want to know which one altered your progression.

- Start with Calamity alone for a first run.
- Add Fargo’s Mutant Mod if reducing grind is the specific goal.
