Neither answer applies in every generation: from Generation VIII onward, Teleport succeeds even if its user is trapped. The exact tactic depends on which game you are playing and whether your Pokémon acts before Abra.
Why Abra escapes with Teleport
Teleport is a status move, and its battle effect has changed across generations. The Pokémon Company International’s Pokédex entry notes that “Abra can teleport in its sleep,” but the move’s rules in battle depend on the game: Abra’s official Pokédex entry.
In Generation I, Teleport lets its user flee from a wild battle and always fails in trainer battles. Later games changed how trapping interacts with it. In Generation VIII onward, Teleport succeeds regardless of trapping; when a wild Pokémon uses it, the battle ends. For the generation-by-generation mechanics, see Bulbapedia’s Teleport reference.
Moves and abilities that can prevent Teleport
Taunt
Taunt prevents its target from using status moves while the effect is active. Because Teleport is a status move, an Abra affected by Taunt cannot use it during that time. Taunt’s restriction and move-order details are described in Bulbapedia’s Taunt reference.

Turn order matters. If Abra moves first on the turn you use Taunt and has already used Teleport, Taunt cannot stop that move retroactively. To rely on Taunt, it must take effect before Abra acts.
Trapping moves or abilities
In games where the trapping rules apply, an applicable trapping move or ability can prevent Teleport. The interaction varies by generation, however; in Generation VIII onward, trapping does not stop Teleport from succeeding. Check the mechanics for your specific game before counting on a trap.

Which tactic should you try?
| Tactic | When it can work | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Taunt | When it takes effect before Abra uses Teleport; it blocks status moves while active. | If Abra acts first and uses Teleport, Taunt is too late for that turn. |
| Trapping move or ability | In generations where trapping prevents Teleport. | It is not reliable in every generation; from Generation VIII onward, Teleport succeeds regardless of trapping. |
What to check before trying to catch Abra
- Identify the game. The answer depends on its generation, so a tactic that works in one title may fail in another.
- Check the move order. If using Taunt, it must affect Abra before Abra gets to act.
- Confirm the trapping interaction. Do not assume that a trapping move or ability will prevent Teleport in a later game.
If you share the Pokémon game you are playing, the advice can be narrowed to that game’s rules rather than guessing from the series as a whole.
