There is no proven mouse weight that is best for every competitive gamer. Studies give some reason to try a lighter mouse—particularly for target acquisition at lower sensitivity—but they do not establish a universal gram target. Choose by testing weight alongside shape, grip, sensitivity and your ability to control the mouse.
What studies say about mouse weight
The evidence suggests weight can matter, but it does not show that lighter is always better or that switching mice will improve a player’s rank.
Target acquisition at four weights
A 2021 study had 72 video game players perform a target-acquisition task using mice weighing 50 g, 60 g, 90 g and 100 g. Its authors concluded that “using a lighter mouse at lower sensitivity may augment target acquisition performance among video gamers.” The wording is qualified: the result concerns a specific task and tested conditions, not tournament outcomes across games or a guaranteed benefit for every player. The study record is indexed by PubMed.
Professional gamers and two close weights
A 2023 study compared 80 g and 87 g mice, as well as wireless and wired connections, with professional gamers. Its highlights report better wireless results on some measured outcomes and a preference for the very light mouse over the light mouse. Since the study examined connection type as well as weight, and compared weights only 7 g apart, those findings do not isolate a precise weight advantage or identify an ideal mass. How to choose a weight for your setup
Use the study results as a reason to compare options, not as a prescription. A lower number on a spec sheet matters only if the mouse works for your grip, settings and play.
Check whether you can start and stop the mouse cleanly
During play, notice whether the mouse feels easy to move and stop without unwanted movement. This is a practical self-check, not a universal rule established by the studies. Compare over repeated sessions rather than relying on a brief first impression.

Consider shape and grip with weight
Weight is only one part of fit. Razer’s guidance also identifies shape and grip style, sensor accuracy and latency as considerations when choosing a gaming mouse. See Razer’s gaming mouse guide. A mouse that suits your hand and grip may be a better choice than one selected solely for being lighter.
Keep sensitivity consistent while comparing
The target-acquisition study’s conclusion specifically mentions lower sensitivity. If you compare mice, keep your in-game sensitivity and other familiar settings steady; otherwise, you will be changing more than weight at once. The study does not establish that its result applies equally at every sensitivity.

Account for the game and the length of play
The studies used particular gaming tasks and participants, so their results cannot settle what feels best across every competitive game or session. The professional-gamer study also examined muscle activity and preference, but its findings should not be treated as medical evidence or a guarantee about fatigue.
A practical way to compare mice
- Choose a lighter candidate. Compare it with your current mouse or another option you can use, without assuming that the lowest available weight is automatically best.
- Keep your settings familiar. Use the same sensitivity and other relevant settings for each mouse.
- Play across repeated sessions. Pay attention to starting, stopping and maintaining control during the tasks you actually play.
- Choose the one you control comfortably. Treat your experience as a personal fit decision, not proof that one weight is best for everyone.
This is a practical comparison approach, not a study-validated testing protocol.

How to interpret “lightweight” mouse claims
Terms such as “lightweight” and “esports” are product positioning, not independent evidence of better performance. For example, Razer describes the DeathAdder V3 as an esports mouse and claims a weight reduction of more than 25% compared with its predecessor. Logitech describes a redesign of the G502 aimed at reducing weight. Neither claim establishes that these models—or any particular weight—will improve your aim.
