What Nintendo Didn’t Tell Us About Switch 2—and What We Know Now

Switch 2’s reveal covered more than a new console: it introduced microSD Express storage, qualified backward compatibility, new sharing features and region-specific pricing that later changed.

Nintendo’s January 2025 teaser confirmed a successor was coming that year, but left the details for a later announcement. The April 2 reveal filled in the release date, hardware, games and features; subsequent notices changed some regional prices and added a Japan-only bundle. The details worth knowing are the limits as much as the headline specs: Switch 2 does not support every original Switch game or accessory, and it requires a different card format for game storage.

What Nintendo said—and when

The wording “didn’t tell us” is best read as a hook, not evidence Nintendo deliberately withheld information. On January 16, 2025, Nintendo’s teaser announced Switch 2 as the successor to Switch and said it would arrive in 2025, while promising more details later. Nintendo’s teaser announcement did not yet provide a release date or a full feature list.

The full announcement followed on April 2, 2025. Nintendo set the release date for June 5 and described the system, storage, compatibility, new features and launch configurations. Its launch announcement is the clearest point of reference for what was known at launch. Price notices in 2026 and a later Japan-only bundle announcement are separate developments, not part of that original reveal.

What the headline hardware specifications mean

256 GB of storage, but a new card requirement

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage—eight times the capacity it stated for the original Switch. Some of that space is reserved for system use, so it is not all available for games and other content. To expand storage for Switch 2 games, you need a microSD Express card. A conventional microSD card cannot be used for that purpose, although Nintendo says one can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance before reusing a card or accessory.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

TV output and battery are specified ceilings and estimates

Nintendo says the dock can output up to 4K, and games can run at up to 120 frames per second. Those maximums do not combine: 4K output is capped at 60 fps, and the TV and game must support 4K. The numbers describe capability, not a promise that every game will render at those settings.

Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game and how the console is used. It estimates around three hours to charge while the console is asleep. These are manufacturer estimates announced in 2025, not independently measured results.

Which original Switch games and accessories carry over?

Games: broad compatibility, not a guarantee for every title

Compatible physical and digital original Switch games work on Switch 2, but Nintendo warns that some titles may be unsupported or may not be fully compatible. “All Switch games work” is therefore too broad. Check the current status of a particular game in Nintendo’s compatibility information before relying on it; compatibility can be game-specific.

Controllers and other hardware: pairing is not the same as fitting or powering

Some older controllers can be reused wirelessly, but original Switch parts do not all attach to or operate the new system. The distinctions matter if you are planning what to keep:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Original Joy-Con: can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to Switch 2. They need an original Switch or an appropriate charging accessory to charge.
  • Original Switch Pro Controller: works wirelessly and can charge through the Switch 2 dock over USB.
  • Original Switch dock: is not compatible with Switch 2.
  • Original AC adapter: can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but cannot power TV mode.
  • Original Joy-Con attachments: the original grip, strap, charging grip, wheel and other listed attachments do not fit Joy-Con 2.

For an accessory, check the exact model and what you need it to do—pair, charge, attach or support TV play—rather than assuming that compatibility with the original Switch carries over to every Switch 2 component.

How GameShare and Virtual Game Cards work

GameShare lends access for a play session

With a supported title, a Switch 2 owner can invite other players to temporarily play through local play. Between Switch 2 systems, GameShare can also be used with GameChat. If a Switch 2 shares a game with an original Switch, the original system can receive original Switch games, not Switch 2-exclusive games. GameShare is a way to play together temporarily, not a transfer of game ownership.

Virtual Game Cards manage a digital library across systems

Virtual Game Cards show a user’s purchased digital games in the Home Menu. Nintendo says they support loading games onto two systems and lending or borrowing compatible cards under its rules. A compatible card can be lent to or from systems within the user’s Nintendo family group. Once a digital game is activated on a system, Nintendo says it can be played offline there, and other users registered on that system can also play it. These rules do not amount to unrestricted simultaneous access on multiple systems; consult Nintendo’s support guidance for the applicable conditions.

Nintendo’s April 2025 launch announcement described GameChat access without a membership for a limited period through March 2026. That period has passed; the launch-era statement does not establish the feature’s current membership terms.

What Switch 2 costs depends on region and date

Nintendo’s original April 2025 announcement listed its Japan-only Japanese-language system at ¥49,980 and a launch Mario Kart World bundle at ¥53,980. Those are historical announcement prices, not current Japan prices. In May 2026, Nintendo announced regional price revisions. The following figures are Nintendo’s listed prices; local street prices and availability may differ.

Region or offer Price and timing What the figure means
Japan-only Japanese-language system ¥59,980 from May 25, 2026 Price includes tax.
United States system $499.99 from September 1, 2026 Price excludes tax.
Europe system €499.99 from September 1, 2026 Price includes tax.
Japan-only choose-your-game bundle ¥63,980; launches November 12, 2026 Announced October 6, 2026; includes a download code for one of three digital games. It is upcoming as of October 8, 2026.

Nintendo said other regions would also revise prices, with timing to be announced by regional subsidiaries. The May 2026 notice does not give a single worldwide price or establish current prices for regions beyond those listed. See Nintendo’s price revision notice and its October bundle announcement for the dated regional details.

What to check before upgrading or buying accessories

  • Look up a specific original Switch game’s current compatibility status instead of assuming every title works perfectly.
  • For expanded game storage, choose a microSD Express card verified for Switch 2; an ordinary microSD card will not install Switch 2 games.
  • Check an old controller or accessory by function: wireless pairing, charging, physical attachment and TV-mode support are separate questions.
  • Compare prices using the correct region, tax treatment and date. The Japanese-language system is Japan-only, and the November 2026 bundle is not available yet as of October 8.
  • For digital lending, sharing and offline play, follow Nintendo’s current Virtual Game Card and GameShare rules rather than assuming that owning a digital copy means unrestricted use across accounts or systems.
