Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 Direct made Switch 2’s upcoming identity clearer than the original Switch’s: its two headline new Nintendo adventures, Metroid Ravenous and Kirby and the World Beyond, were both announced as Switch 2 exclusives. But the presentation was not Switch 2-only. It also included original Switch releases, games listed for both consoles, upgraded editions, and third-party announcements.
What the September 2026 Nintendo Direct announced
Nintendo described the September 9 presentation as a showcase of games and content coming to both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Its official recap highlighted new first-party games, enhanced editions, third-party titles, and additional content for existing games. That mix matters: a new exclusive says something different about a console’s future than an upgraded edition or a release shared across systems.

The clearest signal about Switch 2 was Nintendo’s pair of new adventures starring familiar characters. The company called Metroid Ravenous an intense new 2D action adventure and described Kirby and the World Beyond as a journey through expansive 3D landscapes; both were announced exclusively for Switch 2. Nintendo’s official recap presents them as the event’s brand-new games featuring Samus Aran and Kirby.
Which games are Switch 2 exclusives?
New Nintendo adventures
- Metroid Ravenous: a new 2D action adventure, announced for Switch 2 exclusively. Nintendo UK lists January 28, 2027 as its release date.
- Kirby and the World Beyond: a new Kirby adventure built around expansive 3D landscapes, announced for Switch 2 exclusively. Nintendo UK describes its timing as “Go beyond spring 2027,” rather than giving a specific day.
These announcements give Switch 2 the strongest forward-looking first-party identity in the presentation. That is an assessment of the lineup’s emphasis, not a claim that Nintendo announced more Switch 2 games by count: the official pages do not provide a comparative tally.

Third-party announcements
The Direct also highlighted a substantial third-party slate, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Persona 6, Persona 4 Revival, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and several Resident Evil releases. Nintendo’s recap names Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition, as well as MECCHA CHAMELEON and Mega Man: Dual Override. These are Direct announcements, not a guarantee that every title is available in every region or has the same release timing. Check the current regional listing before making plans.
How the Switch 2 editions differ from new games
Not every Switch 2 highlight was a new franchise entry or an exclusive adventure. Nintendo also showed editions that expand or update games already associated with the Switch family. Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy combines an edition of an existing game with additional content; Nintendo UK lists it for November 12. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition were also among the highlighted Switch 2 offerings.
Those editions may interest existing players, but they should not be read as equivalent to a new exclusive. The Direct’s mix therefore points to two different kinds of value for the newer system: new games that establish what its future library may look like, and updated or expanded versions that revisit existing games.

What was still announced for the original Switch?
The original Switch remained part of the presentation. Nintendo’s UK listing separates some releases by platform and status: Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is listed for Nintendo Switch, while Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon – Classic HD is listed for both Switch and Switch 2. The recap also names updates or content connected to Pokémon Pokopia, Mario Kart World, and Star Fox. These examples are enough to rule out the idea that the older console was left out, even though the headline new Nintendo adventures were reserved for Switch 2.

Nintendo says many Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2, but “many” should not be treated as “all.” Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for a specific game rather than assuming every title, feature, or accessory will carry over. The hardware itself is also different: Switch 2 is larger, Joy-Con 2 attaches magnetically, and original Joy-Con uses rails.

Controller compatibility has a notable one-way limitation. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but Joy-Con 2 cannot connect wirelessly to the original Switch. What this Direct says about upgrading
If your main question is what Nintendo’s next hardware generation is being built around, the answer is clearer for Switch 2: it has two prominent new Nintendo adventures that are exclusive to it, alongside editions of existing games and a broad third-party slate. If you are weighing an upgrade, those exclusives are the most direct reason in this presentation to consider the new console; the original Switch still has releases, and many existing Switch games are playable on Switch 2. The Direct alone does not settle whether an upgrade is worthwhile for any particular player: that depends on the games you want, their availability where you live, and whether the compatibility details meet your needs.
