No Man’s Sky’s “newest update” in the July 2024 headline means Worlds Part I, also called Update 5.0—not the game’s newest update today. Hello Games pitched it as a broad refresh to planetary variety and visuals, with new gameplay additions including Solar-class starship construction, aquatic landing technology, and the Liquidators expedition. Hello Games’ Update 5.0 notes provide the full feature list.
What is Worlds Part I?
Worlds Part I is No Man’s Sky Update 5.0, released in July 2024. It was designed to make the universe feel more varied and immersive, with changes to water, clouds, weather, planetary environments, and gameplay. The phrase “newest update” comes from Engadget’s July 17, 2024 article; it should not be read as a claim about the game’s current release state.
How did it change planets and exploration?
More dynamic skies and water
Update 5.0 revised volumetric clouds and water rendering, adding more dynamic waves and weather-linked environmental effects. The aim was not just a visual upgrade: changing conditions also make planetary environments feel more active.
More varied landscapes and life
The update expanded planetary diversity with features such as floating islands and new variations in frozen and desert worlds. It also added new creatures, including insect-like life and plant-and-animal hybrids, alongside changes to terrain generation and rendering.

Existing bases and terrain
Hello Games said existing planetary terrain shapes would not be reset and existing bases would not be moved. That distinction matters for returning players concerned that the visual and generation changes would erase familiar locations.
What new gameplay and rewards did it add?
Liquidators expedition
The combat-focused Liquidators expedition introduced Minotaur combat components, insect-themed armor and trophies, and an expedition jetpack. Hello Games said the Liquidator Minotaur parts would later be obtainable through the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion for players who could not participate. The expedition was scheduled to run for approximately six weeks in 2024; that historical schedule does not establish whether its rewards are claimable now.

Solar-class starship construction
Players gained the ability to build Solar-class starships, adding a new ship-construction option to the update’s gameplay changes.
Aquatic landing jets
New landing technology lets ships land on water. This complements the update’s aquatic and ocean-focused improvements by making access to water locations more direct.

Is Worlds Part I a separate product?
No. Worlds Part I is a game update, not a separately sold physical product. If you do not already own No Man’s Sky, check the current store listing for your platform and edition; the 2024 update announcement does not establish today’s platform availability or purchase terms.
