The Clothier sells Golden Keys in Calamity Mod for 15 gold, and the sale is available once you are in Hardmode. Golden Keys open Gold Chests and Golden Lock Boxes, so the Clothier is the main shop route to them. The listing comes from the Official Calamity Mod Wiki’s NPC item-sale table. One unofficial Fandom table lists a 5 gold price instead, which is covered below.
Where the Clothier sale fits
The Clothier is the NPC you will most often use for this sale. According to the Official Calamity Mod Wiki’s “NPCs/Items sold” table, the Clothier sells a Golden Key for 15 gold, and that offer appears only in Hardmode. Before Hardmode, you need to obtain keys another way.
What a Golden Key opens
A Golden Key unlocks a locked Gold Chest or a Golden Lock Box. The key is consumed when used. Each key opens one lock, so buying or finding a key is only useful when you have a locked container to open. Golden Keys are base Terraria items, and the mechanics described here follow the Official Terraria Wiki’s Golden Key page.
Other ways to get Golden Keys
If you cannot buy keys yet, or you want more than the shop provides, the Official Terraria Wiki lists several sources. The rates below are the figures that page gives for base Terraria. Calamity may change drop tables, so treat them as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

| Source | Listed Golden Key chance | Version or platform note |
|---|---|---|
| Dungeon Slime | 100% drop | Figure given on the Official Terraria Wiki Golden Key page; year not stated on the excerpt reviewed |
| Eligible Dungeon enemies | 1.52% drop | Same wiki page; year not stated |
| Dungeon pots | 1/35 (2.86%) | Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions |
| Dungeon pots | 1/40 (2.5%) | Older console and 3DS versions |
| Dungeon chests | Listed as a key source | No chance figure stated on the excerpt reviewed |
Dungeon Slimes are the most reliable of these sources, since their listed rate is 100%. Dungeon pots and enemy drops are much less predictable, so plan for the lower rates if you rely on them.
The 5 gold discrepancy
An unofficial Calamity Mod Fandom page, “Town NPCs/Items sold,” lists the Clothier selling a Golden Key for 5 gold in Hardmode. That conflicts with the official wiki’s 15 gold. The official table is the more authoritative source, so the 15 gold figure is the one to use. The official page was not directly accessible when this was checked, so the difference is reported rather than explained. If your in-game price differs, the game itself is the final reference, and the price may depend on your Calamity version.
The safest route is to check the Clothier’s stock directly in your own world after reaching Hardmode.

- Confirm you are in Hardmode, since the Clothier’s Golden Key sale is not available before it.
- Look up the Clothier’s current stock in-game rather than relying on a fixed price.
- Keep at least one spare Golden Key when you enter a dungeon, because you can only open a lock with a key in your inventory.
