For a 1080p60 livestream, start with 1920×1080 output, 60 FPS, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a modern hardware encoder such as NVENC, AMF, QSV, or VideoToolbox. The correct bitrate depends on the platform: YouTube recommends 12,000 kbps for 1080p60 H.264, while a Twitch-style 6,000-kbps limit may make 936p60 or 720p60 look better during fast gameplay.

Streaming and local recording need different settings. Use CBR for livestreaming, but generally use a quality-based recording mode such as CQP for local files.

Quick answer: baseline OBS settings for a 1080p60 livestream

Setting Starting value
Base (Canvas) Resolution 1920×1080 when your game or display is 1080p
Output (Scaled) Resolution 1920×1080
Common FPS Value 60
Downscale Filter Lanczos when scaling down
Rate Control CBR
Keyframe Interval 2 seconds
Encoder A supported modern hardware encoder
Codec H.264 for maximum compatibility
H.264 Profile High, where available
Audio AAC stereo at 128–160 kbps

These are starting points, not a universal preset. Your streaming service, encoder generation, game, upload route, and audience all affect the best result. OBS explains that 60-FPS streaming is substantially more demanding than 30 FPS, and its overview of canvas, output, and FPS settings distinguishes the composition resolution from the resolution actually sent to the platform.

Choose the bitrate for your platform

Destination 1080p60 starting bitrate Important qualification
YouTube, H.264 12,000 kbps YouTube lists 12 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60.
YouTube, AV1 or HEVC 4,000–10,000 kbps Use these codecs only when your encoder, ingest workflow, and viewers support them.
Twitch-style H.264 workflow 6,000 kbps OBS documentation uses 6,000 kbps as a Twitch example maximum; verify Twitch’s current limits.
Uncertain or limited connection Lower the bitrate or resolution A stable 936p60, 720p60, or 1080p30 stream is better than an unstable 1080p60 broadcast.

These figures are not interchangeable. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and lists 4–10 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1 or HEVC. A roughly 6-Mbps ceiling can leave 1080p60 H.264 looking soft during fast motion, particularly in games with foliage, particles, or rapid camera movement.

Do not saturate your entire upload connection with OBS. Leave meaningful headroom for network variation and other traffic, then test the route to the selected ingest server. There is no single upload-speed number that guarantees a reliable stream.

OBS Video settings for 1080p60

  1. Open OBS Studio → Settings → Video.
  2. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the resolution used by your game or display, commonly 1920×1080.
  3. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 for a 1080p stream.
  4. Set Common FPS Value to 60.
  5. Choose Lanczos for Downscale Filter if OBS is scaling down.

Base (Canvas) versus Output (Scaled) Resolution

The Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where OBS positions your game capture, camera, alerts, and other sources. The Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution delivered to the streaming service.

If you play at 1920×1080 and stream at 1080p, both can be 1920×1080. If you play at 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 but stream at 1920×1080, it is reasonable to keep the canvas matched to the captured display and set the output to 1920×1080. If performance is poor, lowering Output Resolution is usually less disruptive than changing the canvas, because changing the canvas can require repositioning sources.

Lanczos is a sensible starting point when downscaling, but it is not a guaranteed improvement in every workflow. If you are not scaling, the filter has little practical effect.

OBS Output settings for streaming

  1. Go to Settings → Output.
  2. Choose Advanced Output Mode if you need encoder-level controls. Simple mode is adequate for many beginners.
  3. Open the Streaming section.
  4. Select the platform-supported encoder and enter its recommended bitrate.
  5. Set Rate Control to CBR.
  6. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds.
  7. Use H.264 unless the destination explicitly supports your chosen AV1 or HEVC workflow.
  8. Use High Profile for H.264 where available, and two B-frames where supported.
  9. Leave custom encoder options blank unless a current platform or vendor guide specifically requires them.

Encoder labels vary by OBS version, operating system, GPU generation, driver, and codec. Choose the current non-deprecated encoder exposed by your installation rather than copying a menu label from an older screenshot. YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, up to 60 FPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and Rec. 709 for ordinary SDR video.

Which encoder is best for 1080p60?

For most gaming PCs, start with a supported hardware encoder. Hardware encoding generally reduces CPU workload, which leaves more CPU and system headroom for the game and OBS. That does not mean every hardware encoder has identical quality: generation, preset, bitrate, driver, codec, and content all matter.

NVIDIA NVENC

Use NVENC when you have a supported NVIDIA GPU, particularly if the game already places substantial demand on the CPU. Select H.264 for broad compatibility, or AV1/HEVC only when the destination accepts it and your audience can play it reliably. NVENC controls and quality differ between GPU generations, so do not assume every GeForce card behaves identically. NVIDIA provides additional OBS and NVENC guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD AMF

AMD AMF is the natural hardware-encoding choice on many Radeon systems. Begin with OBS defaults and make one change at a time. AMD’s AMF documentation cautions that there is no single best configuration for every GPU, driver, content type, and use case.

Intel Quick Sync Video

QSV can be useful when supported Intel integrated graphics are available, especially if you do not have a suitable dedicated GPU encoder. OBS recommends newer implementations for better quality and generally favors a capable NVIDIA or AMD encoder when one is already available.

Apple VideoToolbox

On Apple Silicon, VideoToolbox can provide H.264 hardware encoding for streaming. Intel Mac systems have different limitations and may require x264 for livestreaming. The available options depend on the OBS build and macOS hardware.

x264 software encoding

x264 uses the CPU rather than a dedicated hardware encoder. It can be appropriate when the CPU is unusually powerful, the GPU encoder is unavailable, or the game is not CPU-intensive. It is not automatically better than NVENC, AMF, QSV, or VideoToolbox. A preset that works on a lightly loaded desktop may overload a game running at 60 FPS.

Advanced encoder options: a safe baseline

Modern OBS versions may expose options such as preset, multipass, look-ahead, psycho visual tuning, adaptive quantization, and B-frames. Their names and availability are hardware-dependent.

  • Preset: Start with a quality-oriented hardware preset that the system can sustain. Move toward faster settings if encoding or rendering lag appears.
  • Look-ahead: Disable initially when GPU headroom is limited.
  • Psycho Visual Tuning or Adaptive Quantization: Enable only if available and stable; monitor GPU load.
  • B-frames: Use 2 where supported and consistent with the platform’s guidance.
  • Custom options: Leave blank until a specific, current encoder guide gives you a reason to change them.

Extreme copied tweaks often create more problems than they solve. Establish a stable baseline first, then change one setting and test again.

YouTube versus Twitch-style 1080p60

YouTube

For YouTube H.264, use 1920×1080 at 60 FPS, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and begin at 12,000 kbps. YouTube also publishes a 4–10 Mbps range for AV1 and HEVC at 1080p60. Those codecs may be more efficient, but only if your hardware can encode them, YouTube accepts the workflow, and your audience’s devices support playback.

Twitch-style bitrate limits

At approximately 6,000 kbps, 1080p60 H.264 can lose detail in fast games. Try 1664×936 at 60 FPS as a practical compromise, or use 1280×720 at 60 FPS when motion clarity, accessibility, or connection stability matters more than fine detail. This is a quality trade-off, not a universal Twitch requirement. Check Twitch’s current limits and Enhanced Broadcasting documentation before configuring a new workflow.

Streaming versus recording: use separate settings

Do not automatically use your livestream bitrate for local recording. A stream must fit a platform’s ingest and delivery requirements; a local recording can use a quality-based mode and a much larger file size.

For recording, go to Settings → Output → Recording and consider:

  • A hardware encoder if it produces the quality you need without harming gameplay.
  • A quality-based rate-control mode such as CQP, or the equivalent quality option exposed by your encoder.
  • A higher-quality preset than the live stream when your hardware and storage allow it.
  • A fast, reliable drive with sufficient free space.
  • 1080p60 recording even when your livestream uses 936p60, 720p60, or 1080p30.

Numbers such as CQP 18, 20, or 22 are starting points, not universal answers. The right value depends on the encoder, content complexity, file-size tolerance, storage speed, and editing workflow. Record a representative gameplay segment and inspect both image quality and file size before committing to a long session. OBS documents separate recording and streaming configurations in its Output settings overview.

How to test 1080p60 before going live

  1. Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS uses your intended use, hardware resources, and network conditions to create a baseline.
  2. Start a private, unlisted, or otherwise non-public test stream where the platform permits it.
  3. Play normally with the actual game, camera, alerts, browser sources, and overlays enabled.
  4. Open the OBS Stats window and watch for rendering lag, encoding lag, dropped frames, and FPS instability.
  5. Check the platform’s actual playback, not just the local OBS preview. Look for blur, buffering, audio sync, and quality options.
  6. Change only one variable at a time: bitrate, output resolution, FPS, encoder preset, or scene complexity.

A short idle test proves very little. Streaming adds network transmission, real-time encoding, overlays, and platform-specific constraints. Test the same scenes and gameplay conditions you expect during a real broadcast.

Diagnosing common 1080p60 problems

Symptom Likely category First action
Dropped frames Network or ingest route Lower bitrate, test another ingest server, and prefer wired Ethernet.
Rendering lag GPU compositing load Cap game FPS, run OBS as administrator on Windows, and reduce GPU-heavy scenes.
Encoding lag CPU/GPU encoder overload Use a hardware encoder or reduce output resolution, FPS, or encoder complexity.
Blurry motion Bitrate or platform limit Lower output resolution, use a supported efficient codec, or choose 1080p30.
Viewer buffering Audience device or delivery Lower bitrate or resolution and check whether the platform provides transcoding.

OBS shows dropped frames

Network dropped frames generally indicate a connection or ingest-server problem, not an NVENC preset problem. Lower the bitrate first, then test another ingest server if available. Investigate Wi-Fi instability, VPNs, firewalls, security software, and ISP routing. OBS may offer network options under Settings → Advanced → Network on Windows. Dynamic Bitrate can prevent disconnections in some cases, but it reduces quality and does not repair the underlying connection.

See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide for platform-specific network diagnosis.

The game is smooth but OBS lags

This usually points to GPU rendering pressure, an uncapped game frame rate, expensive browser sources, or a scene that is too complex. Cap the game’s FPS, lower demanding game settings, close other GPU-heavy applications, simplify animated overlays, and check the OBS Stats window. On a multi-GPU laptop, also check that OBS and the game are using appropriate GPUs.

If the problem persists, lower Output Resolution before reducing the canvas, then reduce FPS from 60 to 30 if necessary. OBS’s encoding performance guide covers rendering and encoding overload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stream is blurry despite a stable connection

A stable connection does not overcome a platform bitrate ceiling. Fast motion can look soft at 6,000 kbps in 1080p60 H.264 even when OBS reports no dropped frames. Try 936p60 or 720p60 at the same bitrate, use a platform-supported AV1 or HEVC workflow, or switch to 1080p30 when motion is less important. A higher OBS bitrate cannot improve quality beyond the destination’s limits.

Viewers buffer but OBS reports no dropped frames

Your connection to the platform can be stable while a viewer’s mobile connection, device, or region struggles. Lower the bitrate or resolution and check whether the platform offers lower-quality transcodes. OBS discusses this distinction in its viewer buffering guidance.

When 1080p60 is not the right choice

  • Choose 936p60 when fast gameplay must remain smooth but the platform’s bitrate ceiling is restrictive.
  • Choose 720p60 when motion clarity, upload stability, or viewer accessibility matters more than fine resolution detail.
  • Choose 1080p30 when resolution matters more than smooth motion or the PC cannot sustain 60 FPS.
  • Record at 1080p60 and stream lower when you want high-quality local footage without forcing the livestream to carry the same output.

60 FPS doubles the number of frames that must be rendered and encoded relative to 30 FPS, but it does not create a strict rule that bitrate must double. Codec efficiency, motion, resolution, and platform processing determine the actual requirement.

Copyable 1080p60 checklist

  • Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080.
  • Set Common FPS Value to 60.
  • Use CBR for livestreaming.
  • Use a 2-second keyframe interval.
  • Select a supported modern hardware encoder when available.
  • Use H.264 unless the destination supports your AV1 or HEVC workflow.
  • Use the destination’s bitrate guidance: 12,000 kbps for YouTube H.264 1080p60, or a lower platform-specific limit such as a Twitch-style 6,000 kbps workflow.
  • Cap the game’s FPS so OBS has GPU headroom.
  • Test the real game, scenes, overlays, encoder, ingest route, and audience playback.
  • If the stream fails, identify whether the problem is dropped frames, rendering lag, encoding lag, blur, or viewer buffering before changing settings.
