Play the four story campaign expansions in their official numbered order: Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, then Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock, then Bounty of Blood, then Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck. Designer’s Cut and Director’s Cut are separate Season Pass 2 add-ons and sit outside that campaign sequence.
The four campaign expansions, in numbered order
Xbox Wire’s official Borderlands 3 availability announcement, dated September 12, 2019, labels the four story campaigns DLC 1 through DLC 4 in exactly this order. Following that numbering is the cleanest default for a first playthrough, because each campaign is presented as the next step in the same sequence.

The official material establishes this numbered sequence, not an exclusive play rule. Neither Gearbox nor 2K has stated in the listings cited here that this is the only valid or mandatory order, so treat it as the recommended default rather than a requirement.

The two cuts belong to Season Pass 2, not to the four-campaign sequence. If you are counting every downloadable add-on, the official 2K Store description for Season Pass 2 separates them as follows:

The listings cited here do not set an order between the two cuts. Playing the four campaigns first and then moving into Season Pass 2 is a sensible organizing choice, but it is a suggestion, not an official chronology.
Does the base game have to be finished first?
No official page cited here says you must finish the base game’s main story before starting a particular campaign pack, so there is no documented hard unlock rule to follow. The Xbox Store listing for the Season Pass does state that the add-on content requires the base game to be installed and owned. Finishing the base campaign first is a pacing and context choice many players prefer, and that is the only basis for recommending it. The official pages do not support more specific claims about levels, mission unlocks, or story chronology between the base game and the packs.

Which editions include all of the DLC
Edition contents differ by platform, so confirm the exact listing before you buy:
- Xbox: The official Xbox Store page for Borderlands 3: Ultimate Edition describes the edition as the base game plus all six content add-ons. That count covers the four campaigns plus Designer’s Cut and Director’s Cut. The page’s own description reads: “Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition is the quintessential Borderlands 3 experience, featuring the award-winning base game plus all six content add-ons and the full collection of bonus cosmetic packs!” This is the publisher’s storefront wording, not a quote from an individual.
- Nintendo Switch: Nintendo’s official Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch DLC listing associates all four campaign expansions and both cuts with that edition.
If your platform’s listing does not show all six add-ons, buy the campaign packs and the Season Pass 2 content individually or check the platform store for its current bundle.
