Before a child plays a mature-rated game, check the rating and content details for the exact game in your region, then review its online and purchase features and the controls available on the child’s device and account. An ESRB M (Mature 17+) rating is an age recommendation based on content—not a guarantee that every child should or should not play the game. Use it as one input alongside your child’s maturity and your household’s boundaries.
What does Mature 17+ mean?
In the United States and Canada, ESRB M (Mature 17+) is a rating category. It signals that the game’s content is intended for players aged 17 and older; it does not describe every online feature or decide whether a particular child is ready for a particular game. See the ESRB rating guide for category definitions and content descriptors.

Ratings are regional. In Europe and elsewhere, check the age label shown in the local storefront or on the game’s packaging rather than assuming an ESRB category applies. The selected country or region can affect which local rating system, such as PEGI, appears. The European Commission’s Better Internet for Kids guidance advises setting the correct country or region.
How do you check the exact game?
- Find the game’s own listing or package. Check the digital storefront page or the physical box for its regional age rating and descriptors. Do not infer a game’s content from its franchise, trailer, or rating icon alone.
- Read every content descriptor. Consider the kinds of content your household is concerned about, such as violence, language, or sexual content. A category or single descriptor is not a complete account of the game’s scenes or context.
- Look for a rating summary. ESRB provides game-specific summaries for many titles, including many physical games. Use a summary when available to understand more about the context behind the rating; search for the exact title through the ESRB ratings search.
- Check what the rating may not cover. ESRB notes that streamed or downloaded songs for music games may not have been considered when the rating was assigned. If a game adds music or other downloadable content, check the details for that content too.
The FTC recommends learning about a game’s “content, themes, language, interactive elements, and age rating.” That means the rating is a starting point, not a substitute for checking how the game works.

What online features should parents check?
Interactive notices are separate from the ESRB age category: they may alert parents to features of interest, but they do not affect the rating assignment. The ESRB guide describes notices for user interaction, location sharing, in-game purchases, and unrestricted internet access. A notice is a prompt to investigate, not a full explanation of how a game’s settings work.
- Multiplayer and communication: Find out whether the game supports multiplayer, voice or text chat, friend lists, or contact with people the child does not know.
- User-created material and sharing: Check for user-generated content or sharing of images and media. ESRB’s “Users Interact” notice indicates possible exposure to user-generated content and user-to-user communication.
- Location and privacy: Review location settings, especially for mobile games. Some apps and games may use or broadcast a player’s location; phones and tablets often have settings to turn location sharing off.
- Internet access: Check whether the game can open unrestricted internet content, and whether access can be limited on the device or within the game.
Decide what contact is acceptable: playing with friends only, communicating with approved contacts, or no chat. The FTC says chat restrictions may turn off chat or limit whom a child can contact; ESRB notes that device controls may block communication or curate friend lists. Check both the game’s own options and the platform’s controls, because one may not replace the other.

Look for an in-game-purchases notice on the physical box or digital product page when applicable. Then check what the child could be prompted to buy: virtual currency, skins, bonus levels, upgrades, subscriptions, season passes, or randomized items such as loot boxes. A purchase notice does not by itself tell you which items are sold or how a game presents them.
- Choose a purchase rule before play. Depending on the platform and game, you may be able to turn purchases off, require password approval, or set a spending limit.
- Check settings in both places. Review the platform’s purchase controls and the game’s own settings; available controls vary.
- Check ads in free mobile games. Parental controls generally do not offer dedicated ad controls. Inspect app-store information and reviews, or play or watch the game to see whether ads are frequent or promote purchases and downloads.
Which account and device settings should you configure?
Create a separate child account with the child’s accurate date of birth. Separate accounts can prevent a younger child from encountering games or services allowed for an older sibling. The exact rating controls differ: some devices use the age entered for the child, while others let a parent block by rating, and some allow exceptions.

- game ratings and age restrictions;
- voice and text communication, friend lists, and multiplayer;
- purchases, password approval, and spending limits;
- screen time;
- privacy and location sharing; and
- browser or internet access.
Use the manufacturer’s current instructions to find the right menus; labels and capabilities change. Some communications or purchases may also need to be limited inside the game. If you are in Europe or another region using a local rating system, confirm the account’s country or region is set correctly so the displayed age guidance aligns with that system.
How should you make the family decision?
Consider the child’s age, maturity, prior experience, and your family’s boundaries together with the rating and features you checked. There is no single age at which every child is ready for every mature-rated title. You can play the game, watch the child play, or consult gameplay footage and reviews to understand its context.
Agree on practical rules before access: when and how long the child may play, whom they may contact, whether chat is allowed, and whether any spending is permitted. Talk through what to do if another player is abusive or a conversation feels uncomfortable: block or report the player, stop playing, and tell a trusted adult. Ratings and technical controls can support those rules, but they do not replace conversation and involvement.
