The most important PC features in a Call of Duty game are, in order, a frame rate your hardware can sustain, display support that matches your monitor, and enough graphics, control and interface settings to tune the experience. Activision’s September 29, 2026 PC announcement for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 makes all three areas explicit: it announces support for 1080p, 1440p, 4K, standard and ultrawide displays; more than 800 customization options; an in-game benchmark; and a developer target of 90 frames per second at recommended specifications.
Those are announced capabilities, not independent test results. The PC version was announced for October 23, 2026, so performance on retail hardware had not been independently verified as of October 13. The practical question is therefore not whether a headline number guarantees performance, but how each feature helps you choose settings and hardware intelligently.

The three PC features that matter most
| Feature | Why it matters | What is confirmed for Modern Warfare 4 | What is not confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame rate and consistency | A stable frame rate makes aiming, camera movement and input timing feel predictable, and lets you use a high-refresh monitor effectively. | The developer states a 90 FPS target at recommended specifications and describes a built-in benchmark that reports average FPS, CPU and GPU data, ping, input latency, zone-by-zone results and suggested settings. | No independent benchmark, frame-time chart or guarantee for every PC or graphics preset. |
| Resolution and aspect ratio | Resolution affects image detail; aspect ratio determines how your monitor is filled and how the game presents its view. | The announcement names 1080p, 1440p, 4K, standard displays and ultrawide displays. | No complete list of supported ultrawide ratios, performance figures for each resolution, or promise that every menu and mode behaves identically. |
| Customization | Settings let you trade visual quality for speed, adapt controls to your devices and improve readability. | More than 800 options are announced across graphics, gameplay, input devices, interface and other categories. Enhanced FOV, sub-frame mouse polling, multiple upscalers and new graphics settings are listed. | No evidence that one upscaler, FOV value or preset is best for all systems. |
For most players, frame-rate consistency is the first filter. A display cannot show motion more smoothly than the game can render it consistently, while a perfectly supported ultrawide monitor is of limited value if the system spends too much time below the player’s desired frame rate. Customization comes next because it allows the same hardware to be tuned for competitive responsiveness, visual quality or a compromise between the two.
Frame rate: understand the 90 FPS announcement correctly
Target, tier and measurement are different things
Call of Duty Staff describes Modern Warfare 4 as targeting 90 FPS at recommended specifications. That sentence identifies a performance goal for a particular hardware tier; it is not a promise that every recommended-specification PC will hold 90 FPS in every scene, nor is it a laboratory result. It also does not establish a minimum frame rate, a frame-time guarantee or a result at 1440p, 4K or ultrawide resolutions.
#1 Best Overall

Black Ops III Zombies is the most immersive and ambitious Call of Duty Zombies to date, with a full XP-based progression system for players that adds depth and re-playability to the engaging gameplay Zombies fans have come to expect.
The announced benchmark is more useful for your own decision. It is intended to report average FPS, CPU and GPU information, ping and input latency, with results broken down by zone and accompanied by suggested settings. Average FPS is only one part of the picture: a high average can coexist with distracting dips, and latency or CPU limits can remain a problem even when the GPU appears underused.
Match the game to the monitor you actually use
Start with the refresh rate of your monitor and the kind of play you value. If your display is 60 Hz, a stable result around that level is generally more relevant than rendering substantially more frames that the panel cannot display. A high-refresh display makes sustained higher frame rates more meaningful, but only when the game can maintain them rather than oscillating sharply between peaks and drops.
Use the benchmark as a baseline at your chosen resolution and aspect ratio. Record the average FPS, the slowest-looking zones, GPU utilization, CPU utilization and input-latency reading. Then change one group of settings at a time. This avoids mistaking a resolution change for an effect caused by shadows, effects or upscaling.
What the announcement does not tell you
- There are no independent Modern Warfare 4 frame-rate tests in the available evidence.
- The 90 FPS figure is not a guarantee for every map, mode, patch, driver or background workload.
- No published result establishes how much performance is lost when moving from 1080p to 1440p, 4K or an ultrawide mode.
- No frame-time percentile, minimum-FPS or stutter measurement is provided.
That distinction matters when comparing a PC specification sheet with your expectations. Treat the announced figure as a starting target, then let the in-game benchmark and your monitor’s refresh rate determine the settings you keep.

Resolution and ultrawide support: what you can expect
The announced display range
The PC feature announcement explicitly lists 1080p, 1440p and 4K, along with standard and ultrawide displays. That is a meaningful compatibility statement: players are not limited to one conventional resolution or a 16:9 panel category.
Resolution and aspect ratio solve different problems. Resolution controls how many pixels are rendered and therefore how much detail the image can contain. Aspect ratio describes the shape of the display. An ultrawide screen can have a horizontal format wider than a standard monitor while still using one of several possible pixel dimensions. The announcement confirms the category, but it does not publish every ratio or pixel count.
Do not infer field-of-view behavior from the word “ultrawide”
Ultrawide support does not, by itself, prove that every mode exposes exactly the same additional scene area, that every cutscene uses the full panel, or that all interface elements are positioned identically. Field-of-view rules, menus, cinematics and competitive modes can be implemented differently. The safe conclusion is that the game is announced to operate on ultrawide displays; exact behavior should be checked in the released build.

- 1080p: A sensible choice when maintaining a high frame rate is more important than pixel density, or when the PC has limited graphics headroom.
- 1440p: A middle ground for players who want more detail than 1080p without committing to the greatest rendering load of 4K. A 1440p ultrawide monitor is a broad product category that aligns with the announced support, but no particular monitor is required or endorsed.
- 4K: Suited to players who prioritize image detail and have enough graphics capacity to test that resolution with their preferred effects and upscaling settings.
- Ultrawide at any listed resolution: Useful when the wider desktop format is itself a priority. Verify the game’s actual aspect-ratio behavior and benchmark at the monitor’s native mode.
Because no performance numbers are published for these combinations, do not convert support into a promise of equal frame rates. A higher pixel count normally gives the GPU more work, but the size of that change depends on the scene, settings and rendering technology.

Customization: why 800-plus options matter
It is broader than a graphics preset
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 has more than 800 customization options across graphics, gameplay, input devices, interface and other areas. The value is not the number by itself. The value is that players can tune separate parts of the experience instead of accepting one “low,” “medium” or “high” profile.
Graphics controls can address image quality and performance. Gameplay controls can change how actions behave. Input-device options can accommodate a mouse and keyboard, controller or other supported hardware. Interface controls can improve readability and reduce distractions. This separation lets a player preserve an important visual feature while lowering a less noticeable one, or keep a preferred control layout while changing performance settings.
Visibility and input features announced for the PC version
The announcement specifically lists Enhanced FOV and sub-frame mouse polling. Enhanced FOV is relevant to how much of the environment is visible around the player, but a wider view can alter visual scale and may have a performance cost depending on implementation. Sub-frame mouse polling is an input option intended for more granular mouse sampling; its practical benefit depends on the mouse, system and the rest of the input path. Neither should be treated as an automatic competitive advantage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpscaling choices
The announced options include NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X. Their inclusion gives PC players several ways to balance internal render resolution, reconstructed detail and performance. The announcement does not provide a controlled comparison, so there is no evidence here to rank them or declare one universally best.

- Set in the Pacific Theater of World War II
- Powered by Call of Duty 4: Modern Wafare technology
- Includes perks, rankings, and stats
- Participate in up-to four-player cooperative gameplay
- New infantry and vehicle-based weapons
A sensible approach is to test the available options at the same output resolution and with the same quality target. Look for stable frame times, acceptable image clarity during motion and clean treatment of fine geometry such as railings or foliage. Keep the option that best fits your priorities rather than choosing by brand name alone.

- Set the display mode first. Select your monitor’s native resolution and its standard or ultrawide aspect ratio. Use the mode you actually intend to play, not a temporary 16:9 test if you own an ultrawide panel.
- Run the built-in benchmark. Record average FPS, CPU and GPU readings, ping, input latency and the zones where performance falls behind. The benchmark’s suggested settings are a starting point, not an obligation.
- Choose a frame-rate objective. Base it on your monitor’s refresh rate and whether you value competitive responsiveness, image quality or a balanced experience.
- Identify the limiting component. A GPU-heavy result points toward resolution, effects or upscaling adjustments. A CPU-heavy result may respond better to simulation, view-distance or background-process changes. Do not lower every option indiscriminately.
- Adjust one category at a time. Change resolution or upscaling first if the GPU is the limit, then test expensive visual settings. Keep a short note of each change so you can restore the previous result.
- Configure controls and interface. Set sensitivity, bindings, FOV and interface visibility only after performance is stable. Otherwise, a change in feel can be confused with a frame-rate problem.
- Repeat the benchmark after major updates. Drivers, game patches and new content can change performance. Re-test rather than assuming an earlier profile remains optimal.
What older Call of Duty PC guidance can—and cannot—tell you
The official Modern Warfare III PC controls guide illustrates the kinds of settings Call of Duty players may encounter, including mouse sensitivity, key mapping, aspect ratio, shadow quality and VRAM estimates. Those examples are useful for understanding customization categories, but they describe an older game and should not be presented as a complete list of Modern Warfare 4 controls or as evidence that the two titles perform identically.
Game-specific specifications also vary. The official November 2025 Black Ops 7 PC announcement described a recommended tier aimed at 60 FPS in most situations with high settings, and separately described competitive/high-refresh and ultra-4K tiers. Those figures belong to Black Ops 7. They demonstrate why a specification from one Call of Duty release cannot be transferred to another, not what hardware Modern Warfare 4 requires.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Reading a target as a guarantee
A developer target is useful for setting expectations, but it is not an independent test. Wait for the released benchmark on your hardware and check consistency rather than relying on a single headline number.

Buying for resolution without considering frame rate
An ultrawide or 4K monitor changes the rendering workload. Confirm that your PC can test the panel’s native mode at the frame-rate objective you care about before treating display support as a reason to upgrade.
Assuming more options automatically mean better performance
More controls give you flexibility, but they also make tuning easier to get wrong. Change settings systematically and keep a known-good profile so a visual improvement does not conceal latency or stutter.
Copying settings from another title
Black Ops 7 specifications and Modern Warfare III control examples provide context only. Use them to understand categories and tiering, then measure the actual game you are playing.
Which feature should you prioritize?
| Your priority | Start with | Then check |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive responsiveness | Frame-rate consistency and input latency in the benchmark. | High-refresh monitor matching, FOV and mouse-polling options. |
| Sharp image quality | Native 1440p or 4K testing at your preferred visual settings. | Upscaling quality and whether frame-rate dips are acceptable. |
| Ultrawide immersion | Native ultrawide mode and the game’s actual interface and FOV behavior. | Benchmark results at that exact aspect ratio and resolution. |
| Maximum flexibility | The 800-plus customization system and a saved baseline profile. | Separate graphics, control and interface adjustments rather than one global preset. |
The most useful PC feature is ultimately the one that removes a limitation you can actually feel. For one player that is steady performance, for another it is a wider display, and for a third it is the ability to tune controls and visibility precisely. Modern Warfare 4 announces support for all three priorities, but the benchmark and released game—not the announcement alone—must determine the final settings.
